Orion I can honestly say that Pelosi and Schumer definitely consider you part of the flyover country. We would be the residents of the states that would make up the new country.

Where did you come up with that nonsense? "Mass shootings on a weekly basis?" You might consider stop watching and reading all the lies, distortions, and disinformation in the mainstream media by the pap dispensing propaganda meisters. They'll mislead you every time. It's in their blood. wink

The truth is that we are each our own 'first line of defense' and the responsibility is ours to bear.

Law enforcement is good at responding, but until the cavalry arrives, we are on our own, and need to be prepared for that.

Unfortunately that is rarely the message from our government or media.

For the love of Pete guys I was referring to the government...sorry for ruffling so many feathers.

Glad we have the second amendment...sorry for the Canadians because the point will come when they loose what little gun rights they have left...and with the immigration patterns I see occurring...it’s only going to get worse

We have no "RIGHT" to own a firearm, it is a "PRIVILEGE".

If I shoot someone, even if they are breaking into my home, I will likely have to bankrupt myself defending myself in court. Not many chiefs of police or prosecutors have the balls to determine I had self defence. I would be charged. I would have to justify how I came to have firearms easily accessible. Sad huh?

Right now, all my firearms are in the basement in a safe. Ammunition locked up separately. I should get a safe and ammo box in my bedroom, although there is little chance of an armed incursion unless the crims believe I have drugs, or the gangsters hit my house by mistake, thinking I am the house with drugs. Non drug related home invasions are extremely rare.

AB2506;
Top of the morning to you sir, I hope the day's a tad warmer on your side of the big hills and that this finds you and yours well.

While you might be aware of some of the details now coming to light regarding the Nova Scotia shooting, I thought I'd relay them here in the event that others might be interested.

Yesterday the RCMP confirmed twice that the shooter DID NOT have a firearms licence and WAS NOT in possession of firearms legally. They still have not elaborated as to what was used, but no mention of AR/AK variants which is telling if you ask me.

There were a couple reports that the RCMP fired shots into at least one building where the shooter was nowhere near or had never been in. One was a fire hall apparently.

That coupled with the fact that the US Consulate was letting US citizens living in Nova Scotia know what was going on before the RCMP did anything other than Twitter doesn't have particularly good optics for the RCMP Command out there.

One source which I would deem credible, said that the killer came to one house, was beating on the door demanding to be let in and this chap somehow knew something was afoot and so announced that he had a loaded arm on his side of the door as well. The killer left, but the person involved is reluctant to come forward for fear of repercussions from the law or media.

Can't say I blame him as currently I don't perceive the media or RCMP giving an armed citizen a fair shake, you know?

In one of his many news briefings from home, Prime Minister Dressup was asked how his proposed new gun legislature would have been effective in light of the fact that the gunman did not possess any legal firearms. Characteristically, PM Shiny Pony stuttered no less than 3 times and said "Ah" or "Um" no less than 6 times in 3 sentences which contained no answers.

Once again, Bill Blair looked either drunk or at very least hungover and offered no answers either...

Second last item, whenever the "experts" are called on to either TV or radio news, they're not sure if any of the RCMP had their C7 "Patrol Carbines" out that night and could not explain why after spending all that time, energy and funding that might be the case.

Speaking of mainstream media nomenclature, it torments my soul to distraction when the same arm is a "patrol carbine" if it's in the hands of Canadian LEO, but becomes an "assault rifle made to kill people" if I own it!!!

Should one be looking for current examples of schizophrenic behavior... frown

Lastly, I'll say to anyone who cares to listen that the folks who talk about "reasonable gun control" want them all. They do not want us, the unwashed in rural areas to have so much as a single shot Cooey shotgun or .22. We cause them terror for a variety of reasons and they believe in their heart that if we're disarmed completely that we'll be somehow less frightening.

The fact that the Canadian government made us register the AR/AK/FNFAL variants means that they absolutely are able to take them because they know where most of them are at - I say that because realistically they run only 90% when looking for registered restricted firearms here...

So yes folks, registration can absolutely lead to confiscation and anyone telling you otherwise is either lying or hasn't been paying close attention to much in life.

While I suppose I should be a good Canadian and apologize for the less than charitable "rant", hopefully the gentle reader can perceive my frustration with those in power - who less than 35% of us wanted by the way......

All the best to you folks AB2506 and stay well.

Dwayne

This. Your personal safety is your personal responsibility. If you believe otherwise you have your head in the sand, or maybe somewhere else.

Can you expand on that Dwayne? I apologize for my lack of understanding of your election process..... sounds bad.

In times like these I'm reminded of the common daydream where red States join with Conservative regions of Canada to form a strong hold against the insanity of the Left..... we bring reasonable concealed carry legislation to the table you guys offer us resident hunting and fishing This could work....

Latest reports say the RCMP was busy carefully crafting a warning message to be put out but the situation was resolved before they could do that. Apparently, just saying, "There is a nut job in a cop car, wearing a cop uniform, shooting people and burning down houses", would not work.
The issue becomes a little complex when one considers that the nut job was impersonating a cop. We are all conditioned to trust a cop. This in spite of a lot of evidence that we should not. The thing is, the idea that some stranger is going to come to our door to kill us is so foreign to our experience and expectations, most would be pretty unlikely to make pulling out Ol' Betsy and blazing away their default move. I always have a loaded rifle leaned up next to the door but I don't grab it every time I see someone coming up the drive. GD

Top of the morning to you sir, I hope that all things considered this finds you and yours well and thanks for reading my lengthy diatribe.

While I'm not an expert in political systems, we've got the "first past the post" system so the candidate with the highest number of votes in a particular riding gets that riding seat.

Before going further I should take a quick detour and say that in order to run for any party, one must get sign off from the party executive, which means that they'll expect you to tow party line in any parliamentary vote. So one cannot vote either with one's conscience or better still according to the majority of your constituent's wishes on many or most issues... frown

All that then isn't that dissimilar to the US system as I understand it, however, we have at minimum 4 major parties running in most elections - 5 inside Quebec.

They'd be:

Conservatives - who truly aren't as conservative as many Republicans, but they represent the party on the right side of the spectrum.

Liberals - they're supposed to be center left, but of course they get diluted with members from further left who aren't happy with never getting into power.

New Democratic Party - further left, socialist party who are only slightly to the right of the Canadian Communist Party

Greens - I believe they're south of the medicine line too, but up here they've made strides in provincial and federal politics. While I respect the ideals of many Greens, how they hope to get there is - I believe - not possible.

Parti Quebecois - only in Quebec - they make no bones about wanting more money and power for Quebec. The hard core ones want to separate from Canada - as long as the rest of us keep pumping transfer money into Quebec. The only charitable
thing I can say about them is that they're honest about not giving a flying flip about the rest of Canada.

There's also independents and as mentioned the Communists will sometimes field a candidate, so often there's 5 or 6 candidates to choose from on any given ballot.

Without going too far into the mess that's Canadian politics, the Members of Parliament are assigned to each region as well, emphatically not by population. That's how Quebec can keep taking western money, they have more Members than any 2 or perhaps 3 western provinces combined. Cool situation, no?

With apologies to my friends in Atlantic Canada, they're vote often counts for 4 votes in Alberta or British Columbia.

Before I go further, yes we're trying to change that and no we're not pleased. For instance up until this recent mess of Covid - the GDP of British Columbia exceeded all of the Atlantic Provinces COMBINED....

In summary then, that's how some fresh faced college student can be elected as the local member of parliament by only 30% of the voters in that riding.

As well, even ridings that have gone Conservative since time began here in rural BC, Alberta or Saskatchewan don't have the combined voting clout in the House of Commons that a few villages in Quebec have - sarcasm now duly inserted.

Hope all that made some sense sir, thanks for the interest and stay well.

Dwayne

Dwayne, good morning sir.

Greydog, you are correct. The Mounties flubbed the press release or emergency broadcast. CTV National News said officers could not find a senior officer to sign off on the warning, 10 hours after this event started! Hours were wasted and it was over with before they got anything other than a tweet out. Did more people die because they were not warned the shooter was dressed as a Mountie? Heads should roll!

But then we know the Mounties are pathetic these days, a pale shadow of what they were when I was a youth 45 years ago. Mounties were respected then, valued leaders in our communities where they served. I guess decades of Affirmative Action, hiring to make sure you have the determined numbers of gender, language, skin color etc drags an agency down, rather than hiring for the best candidate for each slot.

Finding that their PC AA candidates struggled to pass the paramilitary style six month long police training, they lowered the training goals so they could pass. As time went on, recruiting was more difficult, so they lowered the quals required. A 52 year old retired school teacher could make it. A person so overweight that the longest belt was not enough, they added an extension, made it. (No proof, just what I heard.)

You wonder how leaders allow this to happen, but the progressive politicians demand the leaders follow through with AA, regardless of the consequence. I saw it in the 28+ years a worked in municipal enforcement in Calgary. The politicians demand changes regardless of the business needs of the department.

The Mounties didn't have the patrol carbine in their car? WTF? Too lazy to haul them out? Too much recoil for their sensitive souls They wouldn't use them if they had had them so they leave them at the detachment?

My second daughter just graduated or completed her Criminal Justice degree. Even when she thought about enforcement, she knew to keep away from the Mounties. They are not very respected by her classmates. Thankfully she is likely transitioning to law school.

The Mounties are more like the Keystone Cops than the once vaunted Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Pity.
