The crisis du jour for the American empire is Russia‘s aggression against Ukraine. Ray McGovern is a long-time Russian specialist. After serving as an Army combat intelligence officer in the early 60s, Ray joined the CIA’s analyst ranks. His first portfolio focused on the Sino-Soviet conflict, which was deftly exploited by Nixon/Kissinger (with more than just interpreter assistance from our own Chas Freeman). As chief of the Soviet Foreign Policy Branch, Ray’s analytical team supported the SALT negotiations and he was in Moscow for the signing of the ABM Treaty, cornerstone of strategic stability for the next three decades. Ray correctly predicted Brezhnev's invasion of Czechoslovakia but incorrectly predicted Putin would not invade Ukraine. Ray thinks the new Russia-China entente helps explain Putin's gamble. Zelensky literally used to play the President of Ukraine on television, literally. Meanwhile speculators push energy and agricultural commodity prices toward record highs. The heavy hand of government's Covid-19 dictates fade into distant memory. While equity markets appear to plummet amid 7+% inflation. When in reality they're just under correction following ballooning pandemic pricing driven by the global flight into US securities and unprecedented stimulus. In the background federal legislators push funding for agendas aimed at resolving myriad crisis erupted from failed policy, completing another round in the endless cycle of grift. The shocker for most would be, if they allowed themselves to see it, that this is all just business as usual.

He's is probably one of the top three analysts in the world on Ukraine and on Ukraine Russian politics. No agenda, no BS, Just good fact based analysis. He's a former West Point grad who has been critical of our flawed nation building disastrous foreign policy.

I struggle with Hanson's opening premise that Putin wants to reclaim the 100,000,000 people, territory, and infrastructure Russia lost with the fall of the Soviet Union.

As John Mearsheimer frequently points out there is no evidence for this and Putin has never stated this as his aim. To the contrary, Putin has stated the opposite, as in his infamous quote, "Whoever does not miss the Soviet Union has no heart. Whoever wants it back has no brain.". The notion that Putin wants to reclaim former Soviet member states was invented by the US media narrative as part of the villainization of Putin and the Russian people toward deflecting fallout (annexation of Crimea) from the 2014 Western planned coup against Ukraine's duly elected President Yanukovych.
