Some of you may remember that I put my grandson in TaeKwonDo, because he got very severely beaten by a bully and some of the bully's buds.

Today at school, there was blood in the stairwell, and quite a stir. Bully lost his cool and punched out another kid, right at school. Given the fact that my daughter very carefully documented the earlier incident with my g'son, provided witnesses, and filed a police report, I'm guessing that the bully's career at that school is over as of this morning.

Since the bully lives just a couple of doors down from my daughter's family, I'm expecting that when school gets out, the trouble will start again... about June or so. Well, g'son is at orange belt now, and is on schedule for brown belt by 4th of July. I'm taking side bets...

Throw in some boxing leasons also. Tough to beat good hand speed!

Agree. As an aside, Hollywood and Americanized versions of martial arts have made what was martial arts here more into a watered-down version alternative to soccer and math club. My buddy has a 8 year old son (who's a great kid) who just got his black belt in TKD. I mean, good on the lad for taking an interest and progressing in the art, but I can assure you that the BB awarded is, IMO, a bit of a mockery in the grand scheme of things. In any event, hope your boy sticks up for himself and defends himself well, but please don't assume that his belt color is equated with anything other than a few hundred bucks of yours for lessons and maybe some self-confidence. The latter not a bad thing, BTW.

Good boxing skills are hard to beat. The TaeKwanDo will be best for flexibility and good ground defence. Grew up with some pro- boxers. And take it from me they will ring your bell quicker than anyone. The bully will wake up with more lumps on his head than he can count. He'll wonder just how many guy's kicked his azz.. Funny thing about bullies, most don't like the sight of their own blood! It make em' sick to their stomach and weak in the knees. Once their knees are weak it's nothing but target practice!
Not sure how old the grandson is but you make damn sure that once the bullie is down you tell that kid to give him the beating of his life. He'll never forget who gave it to him and he'll start walking on the other side of the street everytime he see's g-son coming!! Best of luck to the boy!

Oh we see plenty of kids in the class that just go through the motions. In fact, that's probably most of them. But he's developed a mean punch and a couple of really good kicks, plus they are now teaching him to string the moves together and stay on the offensive. He's taking it very seriously, and has slimmed down and toughened up quite a bit. He is... let's say, "highly motivated". Even now, he's probably about an even match for the bully, who is two years older.

You can waste money on TKD, and you can get a black belt that doesn't mean anything. That's not how it's turning out for him.

In a campfire discussion during an AK bear hunt with my buddy, we talked a bit about his 3.5 tours in the Land of all Bad Things (RVN and surrounding countries) with the 7th SOS as a Special Feces (his words), SAS trained JSOG Air Commando. Turns out that his feelings about confrontations there were about the same as mine while taking over crackhouses in Boston projects in the 80s. But then you wouldn't understand that. Didn't involve a chain saw, a confusing game of checkers or an animal that would actually hunt you back...

Hi Denton! I hope the bully learned his lesson and won't tangle with anyone in the future. I also hope your grandson pursues his TaeKwonDo interests. I have two friends with black belts, and both of them found it helpful at least once. Kinda like a gun- better to have it and not need it than not have it and wish you did! In any case it's a great discipline and way to stay fit. Good luck to him.

Admirable to be proficient in a martial art, but this bully kid has already proven he ain't interested in fighting fair when him and his buddies jumped your son. I dunno for example, what level of belt ya gotta be at to do something like fight off three guys jumping you with baseball bats.

The fact that his parents never contacted you and the fact that the bully kid didn't show up again at school considerably subdued from the ass-whupping he shoulda gotten at home after that first attack tells me his home life prob'ly sucks, big time.

The point being that kid bears watching, I dunno what the penalty for fighting is at that school, but expect him to be back before the end of the semester.

Well said, although to my mind there *is* one rule in a street fight: win by ANY means, otherwise be prepared to deal with the consequences. When you are trying to defend against someone trying to do you harm, the concept of 'dirty fighting' means nothing at all.

I'd lay dollars to dim sum that Shtick's experience actually dancing with any Asian boys is limited to his cartoonish dreams, and usually follows the recurring one he has where he wishes that he'd reached a height greater than 5' 4". The bully is about two years older than my g'son... ninth grader, as opposed to seventh. He's not a particularly skilled fighter. He seems to just lose his temper, and physically lash out. Someone who can keep their head can keep him from ever landing a second blow. That's what any of the disciplines are about: Having presence of mind, and some basic tools.

The particular master he and his brother are studying with is unusually good. I've watched as he's taught them the moves, and then has taught them how to string them together into progressively more useful fight strategies. One way or another, he's teaching them to relentlessly attack, and to land punches and kicks as fast as possible. I had to laugh when I realized that the first kick he taught them was right in the balls.

When they get to green belt, they do sparring with padded vests and headgear. I've watched some of them in action, and the better ones do well enough to keep the initiative. That's coming pretty soon for my g'sons. Practice is good.

Yeah, the bully's home life is interesting. Highly affected, status conscious parents, who are in deep denial that their kid needs professional help. I know him well enough to know that he is quite an artful liar, and has them completely buffaloed.

Oh... the comments about boxing and wrestling... yes, those are very helpful disciplines. My youngest son, now mid-30's, was in wrestling in elementary school. One kid just kept tormenting him, so one day he flopped the kid down and put a knee on his throat, and said, "It's not that I can't take you down. It's just that I choose not to." That ended that, without a lot of parental or teacher intervention.

I dunno the nature of the school, and neither do I care to ask here on a public forum. My own frame of reference is public school, where a ninth grader would be off at high school and a seventh grader still in middle school.

A good thing is at that age the age difference is pretty big, a ninth grader oughtta be running in entirely different social circles.

In the context of my frame of reference its not about one on one fighting skills and fair fights, its about premeditated evil, of the sort where a fight ain't necessarily over with a fight. But I might be misjudging the community in this case.

I will say what works best in a public school setting is the law, as in fines and criminal charges against the actor, both of which DO get the attention of the parents when it hits them square in the wallet.

One thing I have leared over the years is that things can go far beyond encouraging the kid to "stand up for themselves", sometimes things can go beyond what a kid could or should be expected to handle. Worse, the kids themselves are likely to tell you only half of what is going on.

Neither do other kids commonly consider intervention by parents in such things as cowardice on the part of a kid. To that age ALL adults are sort of a vague outside community peripheral to student society. Mostly they evaluate the demeanor of the kid himself. Having your child practice ANY form of physical combat is a good thing, but not by any means a panacea.

Ninth grade? Now come the druggie years, another thing to watch for.

If current times are anything like when I was a kid, beating up an older kid means fighting his pards in succession (or combination) until you lose and the pecking order is somewhat reestablished. You'll have more respect when it's over, but it will be a helluva road. The choice to fight now was often made based on who you'd have to fight later.

Street fights are decided in the first 15-seconds. If it takes longer, neither participant really wants to fight in the first place and are likely just trying to save face in front of their pards. Cutesy martial arts have no place in a real fight - a combination of boxing and judo skills are where it's at plus a 100% willingness to kill the bastid you're fighting.

I know, we're talking kids here, but that doesn't change the mindset required to win over a tough opponent. Mothers probably hold a different opinion, but they've never been there.

Martial arts can be useful, but mindset is the big thing. Be always prepared and when attacked, counter attack unmercifully till it's over. NEVER take half measures when you health and well being are at risk. If willing to do that all training just becomes icing on the cake.

Good for him! But remember one thing: a motivated/dedicated black belt holder can be no match for a bully who has several pals with him... Along with the classes, ensure your boy works at building a network of friends that he can be with at times..

BTW, make darned sure you or the parent complains LOUDLY to the school's principal. They are, by law in many states and by policy in all, required to deal with bullies. Problem is, many times it's the "naughty, naughty, don't do that again" syndrome. INSIST on action. Ask to have the local police meet with you and the principal at his office. Ask for permission to bring a voice recorder and get their response on tape (or digital). Tell them in no uncertain terms that any further problems with this particular bully will result in (1) charges being brought and (2) legal action against the schools, (3) formal complaint written to the state education board...

I had a similar problem. Six to eight little azzholes ganging up on my son. He was a green belt TKD. I complained on two other occasions to the principal. This last time, I had the cop with me, a voice recorder and demanded action.

Two of the little [bleep] were kicked out of school. The rest got their attitudes adjusted via the cop. So far, NO more problems at school...

Mindset, Mindset, Mindset. There is absolutely no time for doubt or indecision with respect to your response when the sh*t hits the fan. I have seen well "trained" fighters hesitate because they did not analyze what their response would be in various situations and come to peace with those decisions.

Yes, I agree on the mindset thing. Most of us were carefully trained for many years not to really hurt anyone... just isn't sporting. You have to get rid of that, and be intent on doing as much real bodily harm as you can, as fast as you can.

Our school system here is a Jr. High model. Kids spend 7-8-9 in Jr. Hi, and 10-11-12 in HS. Personally, I like the middle school model better. 9th graders are much more like 10th graders than they are like 8th graders.

The bully's buds are about 4 8th graders. That should tell us something. They are all from very good families, who are concerned about their kids. The earlier incidents caused a lot of tension between the families, and I think this latest one is going to bring a lot of pressure from the parents.

Daughter played it right by the book. First incident, she took it to the school, and to the parents. She agreed not to call the police if the parents handled the situation. School immediately saw it as a bullying incident, and put the kid on detention, with a "no contact contract" that would have gotten him expelled for next to nothing. Second incident, she immediately called the police, as well as the school. Since that one happened on the bus, he got kicked off. Police interviewed the adult witnesses to both incidents, and compiled a report. Officer's comment to my daughter and her husband was, "I suggest you stay away from those people."

The school is a good school, and they have a very strong anti-bullying policy, which they enforce. This is the third incident that we know of with this kid, so we're thinking either expulsion or in-school detention and mandatory counseling.

My sis is a professional counselor. She suspects the bully has attachment disorder, which leaves the kid with no empathy, no conscience, and no remorse. Think Mark Hacking. If her suspicion is correct, the kid needs serious counseling before it is too late.

Yeah, nobody can whip 7-8 kids. That only works in the movies. Don't know what you do for that before the fact. It's assault, and it's a crime. At least after the fact, the police have a record of the previous incidents, and can handle it.

I took TKD when I lived in Chicago, and it was fun, not trying to start anyflames here at all, just concern for the grandson. I personally find TKD one of the least useful arts for street fighting.

It was developed for the battlefield and being good with your legs (IIRC TKD emphasizes 70/30 kick/punch ratio) can be handy, say a guy with a knife etc.

For street fighting it has it's limitations, IMO&E you go trying to kick above someones knees in the street before you have him on the ground dazed and you are asking for trouble.

Though knee kicks and shin drags and toe stomps have their place in a street brawl.

2 years is a lot to give up at a young age, later on it don't matter so much. But strength is the number 2 factor IME right after mindset.

I know Stick has pizzed some of you guys off on this thread, but you could do worse than to go back and read his comments via joint manipulation, eye gouge and skoozlepipe crunching. Giving up 2 years to a kid at that age would open all those possibles in my mind, but I ain't ever been accused of fighting fair.

Don't overlook headbutting and biting too, if it ends up in the clinches you'd be surprised what it will do for your opponents lack of certaintity about engaging with you if you can latch on like a terrier and remove some flesh with your teeth. In close a headbutt to the nose is a beautiful thing as well.

By all means continue with the TKD if he enjoys it, but as it is taught in 99.98% of the dojos it's a sport, not combat. But at least he's getting some training about being attacked and learning to do something other than duck or flinch.

Shudokan is better for in close fighting, but nothing replaces a heart to heart talk with grampa about some of the unpleasant moves that are available and the understanding that a good accounting of yourself, even if you get your azzwhupped never hurts as bad or as long as trying to slink around and avoid the bad guys.

Not saying it's right, but after training my son or grandson the best I could to prepare for this kid and it still didn't work, I'd explore other options, tis amazing how much you can buy with a couple of benjamins from a kid that's two years older than the bully.

If none of this makes sense to you, or you find it offensive, please disregard. My experiences in life are just that, my experiences, they may not apply to your situation.

In the end, if a gang of kids is going to pick on my kid and actually hurt him, and the authorities won't or can't do anything, then I'm going to whip some parents' asses.

Having been in martial arts for 18yrs, I can assure you that my 4th degree black belt is just that: a belt. In our system, promotions are on an individual basis, and indicative of individual growth and improvement, rather than how long you've been there or how much money you've spent. Most of us could be taken by a good street fighter, although there are a bunch of us that would be unfazed by 4-5 attackers. More depends on awareness and techniques plus a good portion of attitude. Personally, I'd rather shoot the suckers.

TKD is useless,espically in a street fight.Joe Rogan (yes,the comedian)was the USA lightweight and open weight TKD champion back in the late 80's,and he'll be the first one to tell you that TKD is the most useless martial art in a full contact fight.The only strike in TKD that will stop a fight is the spinning back kick,and if you've ever been in a fight,you'll know that's damn hard to pull off.

The other problem with only being trained in TKD is the ground.If we're in a street fight,and you're getting the better me on the feet,I'm going to take you down-period.That's human nature.The Gracies (who made a fortune off this chit),found that around 90% of street fights go to the ground.Karate and TKD don't even teach how to get back up off the ground because they think you'll be so good,you'll never get into that position.Dream on.

If you get into a street fight (and it doesn't matter if you're a kid or an adult)you better do everything you can to kill the guy,because you can pretty much figure on the other guy doing the same to you.This is coming from someone who has cronic migraines for life and neck problems from being kicked in the head by a bully at age 7,so I know what I'm talking about.He knocked one of the discs in my neck out of place-if he'd kicked me much harder,he would have killed me.

Take the kid out of TKD,and put him into boxing and wrestling.And teach him how to get [bleep] mean.He's going to have to accept that he needs to gouge the guy in the eye,stomp him or kick him in the head on the ground when he's down,break his arm with a submission if he can,choke him out,whatever he can do to hurt him as badly as possible as quickly as possible to end the fight.

IIRC, the guy who plays Al Bundy is something like a 4th degree black belt in something.. Seems to me some fool tried to punch him out on some street and the perp found out old Al knew some real $hit and perpy was dropped so hard to the ground they had to rock him to break the suction.... I'm a peaceable old dude, and don't know much about street fighting, but over 40 years ago, before the martial arts became popular and commercialized in this country, I studied karate for a time under a couple of Japanese masters. They were young men who had been sent to the U.S. by the Japan Karate Association to promote the sport. It is almost impossible to provoke such men to fight, but I wouldn't bet against them. They could move, punch and kick with blinding speed, and I have seen them take a pistol from an attacker before he could pull the trigger. I never saw one in a serious for-real fight, but I have seen a couple of semi-serious encounters between brown and black belt karate students, and ordinary street toughs, and the former more or less played with the latter. So guess it gets down to specific individuals and circumstances, but I wouldn't bet against a serious practitioner of martial arts. That said, I'm not sure this has much to do with teaching a youngster to defend himself, and some good alternatives have been offered here.

my father was more than a bit of a street fighter when he was younger, being that i was rather scrawny when i was young and was the type that tended to get picked on he gave me a couple of pointers:

#1 your not going to win every fight, just make sure you get enough good licks in that the person looses interest in fighting with you a second time even if they win.

#2 be it with a fist, elbow or knee a solid shot to the nose will take the fight out of all but hardened fighters 90% of the time

#3 if they cant breath they cant fight, he strangled the chit out of more than a few

I gotta agree with Stick, joint manipulation is the way to go. My dad boxed in the Air Force and was pretty good, however he said if things went to the ground boxing skills were useless. I had to break one of my buddies fingers as we were boxing and we got mad and the gloves came off, he proceeded to choke the chit outta me and all I could get to was his finger. After bending his finger 90 degrees in the wrong direction it snapped and all of the fight left him.........Blake

Its been my observation that most of the time (probably more than 98%) the person who hurts the other first usually wins. Then again, most are not hardened street fighters. The scariest thing is those few who fight better after they get hit and hurt.

Another observation is that most guys fight fairly civil compared to women.

If one is that worried about fighting, train Gun Fu, as the most dangerous don't fight, they just attack.

This thread has been a kick to read... some really good comments, and good practical advice.

First, I think the system is going to work and take care of this. The school is fully engaged, and the police are aware. One more police report, and the bully will probably be having legal problems. If the bully doesn't have a conscience or any remorse, he at least has to recognize that he's wading farther and farther into deeper [bleep] from a practical consequence point of view.

This bully is not a capable street fighter. He's a suburban layabout, with serious problems, a nasty temper, and a tendency to strike out at kids smaller than he is. He's bigger than his victims, and he is not accustomed to meeting any resistance. He knows how to land a punch or two, and to intimidate smaller kids, but he does not know how to sustain a good fight. One good smack in the nose, and he would either completely lose his cool, or run away. I really don't think it takes much to win the day.

One problem is that the bully is a very artful liar. According to him, he was just stepping in to protect the victim, or he was the victim. In the second incident, he turned around, reached across two seats, to hit my g'son. Bus driver wrote him up, and kicked him off. Good call. The minute his feet hit the ground, he was boo-hooing to his mother that my g'son had attacked him. Absolutely nobody but his parents believed that fabulous story... but they bought it hook line and sinker.

I had to laugh because one of my buddies at work was telling me today at lunch about a bully at his kid's school. Apparently the bully is a head taller and 20lbs heavier than the other kids his age, and my buddies 12-year-old twins are the smallest kids in the class.

The Reader's Digest version is, the two of them finally had a gut-full of being bullied and tag teamed his @$$ last week while the other kids cheered them on.

I can't help but picture that scene from the Christmas Story where Ralphie opened up a can of whoopass on the school bully and was cursing him out like there was no tomorrow.

Anyway, there's a lot to be said for strength in numbers...

The best thing he could do if he's in a stand up with a bully is to hit him first and hit him often until he gives up, then give him another for good measure.

In a boxing match there are rules; it's essentially a controlled environment sporting event. Held in a ring with judges, referee, doctor and timed rounds. No rabbit punches, hitting below the belt, biting (don't ask Holyfield to verify this) No such animal in a street fight. This is not to say that boxing skills are of no use, they absolutely are; learning to move, punch and protect. Problems may arise however, in a fight where the conventions of a boxing match do not apply.

As far as the 'fighting better after getting hit' comment, my Scottish grandfather used to say that a Scotsman didn't even begin to fight until he tasted of his own blood. Back in the day, our high school football team whipped every team around-badly. The best anybody did was within two touches. This wasn't due to the kids on the team-the coach ran the score up for his own ends. At any rate, this understandably, didn't endear us to the communities surrounding us. One night, the community immediately north of ours decided that they would kick our asses before we got out of town. Never happened. Now numbers could tell and so could weapons, but barring some way-out scenarios, how is a team whose asses you just thoroughly whipped on the field going to whip YOUR ass off of it? Same thing with the courts...

Most of the stuff I've learned in life fighting and just about anything else I've learned a good deal of it the hard way, by someone that knew it or was better at doing than myself.

Not all have been gentle lessons, but I try to not have to learn the same lesson twice.

I like to think of myself as a nice, friendly guy, but you could find some dissenters of said opinion.

I don't really give a rip about opinions like Mike's. I replied to the thread because I thought I was bringing something that hadn't been discussed in the way I was discussing it. There's not too many things that kids do that can't be worked out by the adults in their lives, if said adults are rational, reasonable human beings. And if they're not, then sometimes they can be brought around to seeing it the right way by some righteous pressure judiciously applied.

If the boy asked for advice 'cause he didn't want his mama involved, some of us would have said some different stuff. And more common than that is the kid that THINKS he has or WANTS to have the mindset to do a drive-by. Lots of kids have cable nowadays. Both the wannabees and the genuine articles can be dangerous to a decent kid.

I'll put it this way, many folks here go about armed, in case of the often remote happenstance that they'll run into a bad guy. If your kid attends any large school most anywhere he prob'ly walks by bad guys every day.

Figure one kid in a 100 is venomous, 1% of 2000 is 20, all collected in the same building.

So yeah, I'd make a point of knowing who my kid who is at cross-purposes with.

I'm recalling in their heyday the Chinese SKS or AK was touted on some streets as a perfect drive-by remedy, being both affordable and rapid fire.

The idea of a drive-by is (or was, they have gotten rarer of late) to be there one moment, gone the next, partly on the assumption that the target could otherwise shoot back, and lots of them took place in places where guns were common. Return fire was nonetheless pretty rare.

Funniest drive-by story I ever heard was from a guy who was in his front yard at a family gathering one evening when comes a car rolling down the street, windows open, lights out.

Sure enough guns stick out from the car as it rolls closer... and everybody, kids, grandma, aunties, uncles, cousins, hits the deck or dives for cover...

If you've ever seen a video of him,you'll know he literally has the biggest wrists for a man his size you'll ever see.He also must have balls about the same size,because he fought some guys 2-3 times his size in no holds barred chalenge matches that went on for hours.He fought one guy for 3 hours.When he fought Kimura (who came up with the submission named after him,BTW),he weighted well over a 100 pounds more than Helio,but he still went an hour and a half with him before his brother threw in the towel due to a broken arm.

I have always found that those who whine loudest about "racism" to be the MOST intolerant and I also notice that such people, oftimes claiming superior education, frequently post serious errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and so forth, exactly as they accuse others of doing...ironic, eh?

I just wennt through a total confiscation of my entire gun collection, on the whim, largely, of a Vancouver Police ERT "leader" and, through my own efforts, got them back today, after nearly two weeks. A number of my quite rare, collectible and very hard-to-find rifles sustained "accidental" damage to their stocks and complaints about this are utterly useless. I SEE and KNOW what is happening in North America today and this is the ONLY forum I have found that is worth regularly participating in; it is a weapon against the rising statist totalitarianism that surrounds us.

So, I tend to speak freely and strongly support those who also do and I DO NOT TRUST ANYONE who continually tries to suppress free speech on ANY grounds, especially the spurious, trendy false one of "racism". WE died in our hundreds of thousands in two major wars to preserve freedom; do we want to destroy it now in order to appease a questionable attitude about what is acceptable to an obviously biased few? WCB, you say that you are going to die in a few years, is this an incurable medical condition? I watched my beloved brother die for ten long years from severe Diabetes Melitus AND he served on several BC Forest Service Fire Lookouts, obtained an Honours BA, an MA and was just finishing his PhD. when he passed at age 34.

They told me at 14 that I would NEVER walk again, due to a drunk driver, a smashed leg and damaged spine. Four years later, I became a BCFS Forest Assistant and fought fire for over 20 years, plus climbed, skied, hunted AND at 60, I still do, often solo, in the most remote parts of BC.

I have seen colleagues struck by falling trees and burned alive in air crashes during my time in professional bush work. My right leg has a broken bone which will not heal, is inoperable and has 365 surgical sutures in it, the limb is 1.5" shorter than the left, which has also been severely fractured.

I have had Cancer and may yet have it and may not be here next week, I have learned to laugh at Stick's antics...so, IMO, should you. I have been called a Nazi, a Kraut, a Boat Monkey and many other names here and in other parts of my life....big deal, fugem, it makes me chuckle.

Johnny Cash said it best, "this world is rough, if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough" and he wasn't referring to staged, videoed ring fights. With that, my sincere sympathies for any illness you may suffer from, I am not a cruel or callous man, but, I learned as I watched Cancer take my father over 12 years and he NEVER complained or even mentioned it, that only honesty, courage and compassion, which together create your honour, matter in this vale of tears and humour leavens that mix.

Brian is a friend of mine, I was just talking to him on the phone the weekend before last; he and I quite deliberately sparred here for fun. We did NOT do what honda has done here several times or anything like it; maybe read honda's extreme racist remarks concerning my veteran relatives, for example.

I kept out of this UNTIL that little jap dragged me into it AND I repeatedly attempted to lighten the situation, but, I did not call him names as he has done to me. Honda is a guy who would NEVER do this here in Canada as his kind has been dealt with by my people for doing so and I have done so, myself.

Let me make something completely clear here, Honda is, to me, exactly the type of Jap who tortured and murdered friends and relatives of mine, other Canadians, British, Dutch, Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos and on and on. IF, I could get to him, for what he has said to me on this forum, he would not have an opportunity to apologize or anything else. Most of the many Asiatic people I know here in Vancouver feel exactly the same way as do most European-derived people here.

I can go on, at length and in precise personal and historical detail, but, I will end by saying that Honda is the one person I have met here whom I truely despise and his visiting Vancouver would be a very serious error. Well. apropos of not much at all, I'll throw in on this silly thread, not tot he extent of putting duct tape on my kids' faces tho....

Some years back I saw a Japanese kid walking down the hallways of the urban high school where I work looking totally lost, an exchange student, with a look on his face like he had thought he was going to America but instead he had ended up on the moon. It ain't cheap to send your kid on these exchange things (~$15,000 all told), so most of 'em are from upper class households, and here he was, sorta in the 'hood.

I arranged for him to come along the following weekend on an out of town class trip I was leading, just to get him out of the neighborhood for a bit and see some of Texas.

Turns out the couple they had put him up with decided they didn't want him there and had asked him to leave. He told me later that was the worst thing that had ever happened to him, the culture having a high sense of shame and all, he thought he had failed, and here he was on the moon.

Not apropos of much either that my dad was a Marine on Okinawa, another uncle on Iwo Jima, and yet another on Guadalcanal. My wife's mom is Filipino and witnesed the Bataan Death March, before being sent with her mom to the jungle for the duration while her dad fought with the guerillas. Heck, my own mom even had kin among the British expats on Singapore whgo didn't make it through the war.

Anyways, we took the kid in, worked out good for him and for us. Fact is he's been back twice since, all growed up. After a year he went back reasonably proficient in handgun, rifle and shotgun, more so than his Japanese buddies anyhow. His father did write us a very gracious letter thanking us for the transformation wrought in his son, but ALL teenage kids come back changed if ya ain't seen 'em in a year. Most Japanese kid though dont have a combat silhouette on their wall, punctured with a magazine load of twelve gauge slug holes in the kill zone <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

He's been to China several times since, and wants to marry a Chinese girl. I expect he might be unusual for a Nipponese in that regard. I'd claim we ruined him for life but he was of a wandering bent before we ever met him, hence his appearance in our hallways.

This thread, in many respects, is the most instructive that I have seen on the 'fire since I found this site.

One needs to have read Honda's ranting in several threads over the past year and a half to really understand him, however, here he has yet to reply to plain questions concerning most of the boasts he makes. He cannot discuss anything without vicious invective and Stick's parodies have clearly illustrated that fact, to Honda's discomfiture and to OUR benefit in respect of seeing him for the racist, bigot, self-pitying little puke that he is.

I stress again, I kept out of this thread until HE attacked me on it and his frequently expressed wish for my death would, IMO, motivate anyone to reply in self protection. Honda might do well to stop threatening me with referrences to my death as I take this VERY seriously and am QUITE capable of dealing with his type in the traditional fashion.

My reference to the WWII Japs was in response to his earlier joking about the murder-eating of Chinese babies by Japs in WWII. I find this just incredible and his current "defence" of "Asians" in that context again illustrates his extreme hypocrisy and essential viciousness; in this, he reminds me of the bowing, grinning monkeys of Jap diplomats in America at the time of Pearl Harbour, he is utterly despicable.

That's it, the "hate" here has been from Honda and Stick's points make complete sense to anyone who knows Honda well. Time to drop this if it embarrasses many posters here and I have made the points I consider worthwhile.

Like I said before, some here are more comfortable chatting it up with the, "what ever you do don't offend anyone", PC soccer moms at the local Starbucks and others prefer to hang around the ole' woodstove and participate in what I've always come to know as "man speak."

For those that can't (or won't) see the humor here and feel uncomfotable about what is being said, I suggest you simply hunker down with some of the girls and discuss how terrible GW Bush is or how nice it would be if we had HR Clinton as our next President.

Meanwhile, the rest of us guys will just kick back and enjoy some of the best down home humor I've seen in a long time.

Black belts are for gentlemen. There was one evening a confrontation at a pool table in a bar as usual. The local bouncer (black belt, chopchopall thatstuff)came over to break it up. He would always go into his offensive stance which freightened most patrons. On this evening an out of town ruffian popped him with a pool ball in his hand and smashed his eye socket. His eye fell out into his hand. He left quickly holding his hand under his empty crushed eye socket, and was never seen again. This ruffian had been raised in a very rough family with countless beatings from his father, he was always in trouble but could think fast and ruthlessly. He had no black belt but he had many knife cuts and beating scars all over his body. He was plain evil and mean like a junk yard dog, and I pittied anyone that went against him no matter what training they had. Yes he was a bully but he was made so by his father and merciless beatings that he suffered when he was growing up. You have to understand the beast to beat him.

Long ago, I was 22 and a polite young man, raised in a strict Roman Catholic family and taught to be nice to everyone. It was 1968 and the Kootenays were locked in a violent woodworkers strike, so, I was paying "room and board" to my parents to help with my five younger bros./sis. and working construction labour pay my way like a man.

I was hired to help with additions to the local BCTel. building, the crew came from Vancouver and the supervisor was a Jap in his late 20s, about half a head taller than I am. From the very first, the other young "white" guy and I worked hard and well together, typical Canucks, while the Jap was VERY verbally abusive toward me, for no apparent reason.

Finally, after about a week, I asked my co-worker what was the Jap's problem and he replied that this Nip's family had been re-located to the West Kootenay's during WWII, so, he hated every "white" person from this region, did not want to work there and was always like this to new "white" workers, whereever they went in BC. He told me that this jap had a "black belt" and had [bleep] quite a number of other "white" workers on various jobs, while he had known his Nipper family and thus was "safe". So, I now knew what was going to happen and mentally prepared myself to defend my honour from this vermin.

A day or so later, the Jap began to curse me and then insulted my family, so, I yelled at him that he was a "[bleep]' Chinese laundry boy" annd he went into orbit, screaming his Samurai curses and running at me, bent on death and destruction. My time was up and this was it with the fiendish Jap attacking with his Karate skills to smash my evil white face.

I grabbed a piece of rebar and told him that I was going to kill him if he even moved, he stopped, squinted over his Bugs Bunny teeth at me and suddenly realized that a young, wispy-bearded, fresh-faced CANADIAN was about to kill his yellow ass....and I meant it, do or die. He retreated, mumbling away to himself as I firmly told him that I did not mean to insult him, I simply was NOT going to take anymore of his schitt nad that was that.

I spent the next week watching my back, but, this Samurai NEVER bothered me again and paid me, in full, plus overtime, when the job ended. I do not hate Japs or other Asians, but, this was not the first time I was bullied by one as a youth and I do not trust or like Japs as a result. I was young, peaceful and gentle then, if this happened now, I would beat his skull in without a second thought, a man has to defend himself and his honour without exception.

Again, this has been a very useful learning experience although somewhat excessive in tone......a problem with freedom, but, it's worth it.

PMC, my family on my father's side settled in what is now Pennsylvania before 1650, there is a town there named after us and I have scads of American relatives. My mother was born in Idaho, one grandfather in Milwaukee and I could have obtained US citizenship had I wished to in 1967.

Mentioned before,that I don't hate anyone. Chinks are handy(economically) and funny to boot,so it's win/win.
