1) In the grand scheme,crowns really don't make a fhuqk. That being said,I'm hard on Riggin' and keep muzzles taped. I've got every crown knowed to man and more than a few that I simply Invented.(grin) Hint.
2) The short piece of spout is as you opine,in that it's a short section cut with like throat geometry,as a Seating Stub. Quick,fast and handy,less a single concession.

I’m not a professional welder by any means, but I’ve burned lots of rods and mig wire and I don’t think that scope rail is going anywhere, or that those welds are absolutely awful looking. This is Big Sticks rifle after all, he’ll have it kryloned purple or gold soon I’m sure.

I've managed to coax most the mechanical goody,outta more than a few erectors. It takes 75 MOA to do so on a 6x or 10x MQ,as a minimum. 45 MoMo's of inclination in this application,just happened to work out,but I'm still 13.5+ Mils of mechanics,shy of a good time and dat's a bitter pill. This 3-9x coughs up 26.5 Mils of total travel and most 6x MQ's will cough up 42 Mils. In Today's atmosphere,the 3-9x will reach the 1970yd line mechanically(all erector alone). Will find out in the morning,if Theory melds with Application.(grin)
Took this POS out of the Mail,earlier in the day. It has 33.2 Mils of total mechanical,with windage centered.

I’ve used both. Zees haven’t failed me yet but the XTRs are definitely much stouter. Agree with you on the height of the XTR Signatures. Wish they could make them in a low. I’ve actually had no complaints with the SWFA rings. Not as refined as some but seem to align well and hold just fine.

You're building a business and have a customer with a HUGE internet forum following of lovers and haters, who sends you a rail, barrel and action and asks you to weld the rail to the action. He doesn't want to pay for preheat/post weld heat treat, nor, made abundantly clear through countless posts, does he value aesthetics over function.
You do your research and find out the rail is 4142, pre-hardened to 28-32 HRC AND Manganese Phosphate finished. The data sheets say this material is weldable only in the annealed or normalized conditions and should not be welded following harden and temper operations...AND pre-heat and post-heat are recommended....
THEN, it gets better! You're to weld that 4142 to a 416SS action. 416 is martensitic and highly susceptible to ductility issues if mingled in the hot-shortness temperature range.
So, all y'all that want a weld that looks like Jesus welded the crack of dawn or a broken heart...tell me, what would you do?
I tell you what I'd do: I'd get some 312, hold the heat down, butter the weld just enough to stick, then check the hardness on the action and if OK send it off, no charge to the customer so he could post myriad sub MOA groups and brag on the rifle.

You're building a business and have a customer with a HUGE internet forum following of lovers and haters, who sends you a rail, barrel and action and asks you to weld the rail to the action. He doesn't want to pay for preheat/post weld heat treat, nor, made abundantly clear through countless posts, does he value aesthetics over function.
You do your research and find out the rail is 4142, pre-hardened to 28-32 HRC AND Manganese Phosphate finished. The data sheets say this material is weldable only in the annealed or normalized conditions and should not be welded following harden and temper operations...AND pre-heat and post-heat are recommended....
THEN, it gets better! You're to weld that 4142 to a 416SS action. 416 is martensitic and highly susceptible to ductility issues if mingled in the hot-shortness temperature range.
So, all y'all that want a weld that looks like Jesus welded the crack of dawn or a broken heart...tell me, what would you do?
I tell you what I'd do: I'd get some 312, hold the heat down, butter the weld just enough to stick, then check the hardness on the action and if OK send it off, no charge to the customer so he could post myriad sub MOA groups and brag on the rifle.

71’s a good man no question! His work and reputation are solid as iron. I have never had him work for me but everyone that has seems very pleased. To add if that rifle was anyone else’s it would have gotten no criticism, rest assured the owner brought the hate. Shaen deserves no bad PR for fulfilling a customs request even the stupidest ones.

I've only had the chance to have him do one rifle for me so far, but it's an absolute hammer. Absolute shame that his name had to get caught in the middle of a schit slinging contest.

I build guns and post pic's, I hunt and post pic's, I buy from people on the classified, I post many scenery pic's . I offer advice on things I have fist hand experience with. The only pic I have seen of yours, was you and your teenage son when you bought him a truck... guess he couldn't buy one for himself? My Browningby likes the 250's and not much else. Pickiest bee-yotch I ever tried to get to shoot a group.
I even tried the Speer 235 grain just for schitz and giggles...they too were a no go.
I tried some of the 235's too. They shot OK and I figured as long as I kept them on the mild side.........338 Win-ish in horsepower.........they'd be great for medium stuff. Not sure how they'd hold together if loaded ballz out ??

Boat based is the way to go.. last year a lot of folks had problems with bears raiding camps making off with everything far as deer meat etc. I know Jake Jefferson posted about it over on accurate reloading. Bears were going straight through electric bear fence. My buddy did a dlp few yrs back. They had meat in camp they were coming back to camp. They saw the bear she had two cubs they yelled shot pistols in the air, trying to scare them off. But the bear said [bleep] it and went into full blown charge. I think he shot it at 10-15yds with a 375 H&H. He’s been to Kodiak twice and has been involved in dlp’s both times lol.

One of the guys who shoots service rifle up here has a March scope.. this guy is retired from one oil company, but was hired by one of other big oil companies to run all there construction projects up on the slope. This guy has big money. Super Nice guy as well, he was telling me about his 1st job out of college was in Iraq in the early 80’s construction project building a oil pipeline from Iraq to Saudi Arabia. I was a roustabout on a rig in the GOM making 79k a year 21 on 21 off. Entry level crane team deck position. Then we went to the black sea and had ta remove our derrick and reinstall it to get under the bridge in the bosphorus straights at istanbul to set up for natural gas drilling ops in a severely cold weather enviorment. 80 million dollar project. Multiple international companies involved in it all. Got promoted to head rigger/ banksman for that portion prior to drilling ops, everything that went to and from that rig via a 500tn land based crane or the starboard 90 tn rig crane went thru me, I went to roughneck afterwards for drilling ops. Made 129k a yr for 28 on 28 off.
I really doubt some 20yr old was making 200k a yr operating heavy equipment.....

Nothing makes it to three years old in my house. I never found it that challenging to vac seal food! But I also have never had a problem eating frozen fish either. Sh_t just isn't that difficult to figure out.
First Elk I ever killed my buddy said that will feed you all year. It lasted 5 months. Probably wouldn't have lasted much over three months if I had not had a couple Deer and Prong Horn to eat as well. I may not be good at anything else but I can sure has hell eat with the best of them.

I have talked to Drilling guys from companies working in armpits of the world that were getting 100 K bonus and making 150 k salary. Working half the year. There is money working in and supporting the oil business. We had a blowout one time and the pipecutter on the crew that came with Boots and Coots made 9000 a day and that was 20 years ago.
