I've got a buddy that is looking for his first big game scope. He wants to use the $100 gift certificate he has to the local sporting goods store to help hime out as he doesnt have a lot of money.

Right now i'm looking at the Redfield 3x9x40 and the Nikon pro Staff 3x9x40.

I don't have any experience with the Redfield but the Nikon Prostaff serries have served me well before on other guns. I have a 3x9x40 on a '06 vanguard and had a 2x7 that stood up to life on a 1895 45/70 Marlin, so I know they are good scopes for the money. However, after a crappy experience with Nikon's CS with a Fixed 4x Buckmaster I now try to stay away from Nikons for new purchases.

What's getting me is I think the glass in the pro staff series may be better than the Redfield. Can anyone comment on that?
