I was a Quartermaster when I was in the Navy and I manned the helm on ships from the size of a Frigate to an Aircraft Carrier. We used both gyroscopic and magnetic compasses and I don't recall if a bubble was ever an issue.
Is the bubble really that big of a deal or was it that he lied about the true condition of it?


Not sure about this specific kind of compass but the kind I use for surveying are toast once you get a bubble in them.
