With regards to where to live I'll second Rocky Raab's suggestion of Idaho or Utah. I've been in Cache Valley Utah for 23 years. You just have to accept the idiosyncrasies and life is easy. At this point I don't want to change what the Mormon's have going, it works plenty ok for me; they're conservative, against crime, pro family, good neighbors and I have the mountains pretty much to myself on Sundays.
