If the Russians are so big, bad, and scary, why do we work so closely with them on the space program?

We have a lot of common security interests in todays world.
The Russians are scary to the leftists because the Ds and leftists are aligned with Communist China, not semi-capitalist Russia. The Russians are useful to the statists and old-guard militarists because they want to restart the Cold War. The Russians are important to America because there are three major powers in the world today (US, Russia, China), and two of them will face the other; we get to choose which pairing happens.
