They close down things like National Monuments and beaches, so it hurts us. High profile on purpose. So they lose the revenue the places generate, but they post guards to keep people out, which costs money, and they pay the employees to stay home.
Social Security employees are deemed essential and continue working w/o pay until it's resolved. Nobodies checks stop.
But they (congress) still gets paid.
