In the absence of the right mindset nothing else means much. If you don't already plan to have to fight for your life at a moments notice it is time to adjust. At my age hands on is not my favorite option but I still do 30 second disengagement drills on the heavy bag followed by a draw and dryfire from retention. Workouts or hikes 6 days/week. Situational awareness, I call it creative paranoia, has to be cultivated and practiced constantly.

Don't think about carrying a gun, wear it always and be able to draw and fire from concealment in <1.5 seconds. Do a chamber check prior to walking out the door and get your head right. Always remember that you don't get to choose the fight and expect the BG to be a savage and very sneaky. Avoid confrontation and train like your life depends on it.
