Sounds like you have a plan. I looked for years for a decent 8x57 in a m98 that had been "sporterized" and still had a good barrel. Wanted to 8mm-06 it. It finally occurred to me that the mag box would be short for what I wanted from it. One day I was offered a deal on a 700 classic in 8x57 and never looked back, The 8x57 works well enough I'm not going to go 8-06. I scored some of the old Rem 185 gr Corelokts they used in the 8mm mag. Allways heard they didn't hold up well at 8 mag speeds but I am betting they're ok at 2600 fps .good luck. MB
