UP was the first ( and pretty much only) place I've seen people worm grunting/thumping.
They put a stick in the ground and thump it or rub a metal rod over the end of the stick and worms jump out of the ground and off you go fishing.
You can also drive a shovel into the ground and shake it back and forth, in minutes you'll be fishing.
