Some of the most vicious fighting in the early West took place because of water. Ranchers could not ranch without water and many battles ensued. For example, Billy the Kid was involved in New Mexico water battles. He was not alone, by any means.

Looks as if the time might come when "battles," albeit legal, will again be the norm.
