Gerber makes a few knives that I like, their Gator line specifically the fixed blade S30V that Cabelas sells on sale for around that price. Sheaths re IMHO pretty worthless. I don't often carry a fixed blade on my belt but I bought one Kydex sheath for when I do.
The regular Gator is cheaper and is easier to sharpen if he isn't into Diamond stones.

Cabela's has Kershaw AUS8 Antelope hunters for around 14.00 right at the moment. nice sheaths too.
