I like all the stuff Trump has been talking about during his rallies. I assume that most of the Left and middle haven't watched those like we have. So if he accomplishes nothing else tonight, I hope Trump basically reiterates all the great points he has been making on the trail so other people can hear what he has to say. If they don't want to believe the information, there's nothing we can do about that. But at least they can hear it, unlike on the MSM channels they probably watch.

Biden came across as being better prepared. Trump was controlling the first portion of the debate, and Biden looked a bit better as the "debate" continued. I think the biggest winner of that clusterfug was the share price of TSLA tomorrow.

Trump is a disruptor and came off looking strong, aggressive and in command.

My overall impression as well.

I noticed too Biden looking down numerous times apparently reading prepared notes to certain questions asked. Toward the end he was starting to sound a bit confused, stammer, slur pronunciations and blink his eyes frequently.

I hate to say it but Biden had Trump on the defensive most of the debate.

Give one candidate 3 minutes. Give the other candidate 3 minutes. They can use their time to rebut what the other candidate said or to discuss whatever it is they want to discuss.

That's a debate.

In the first few minutes, it was clear that Joe was struggling to piece together coherent sentences. I have no idea why you would interrupt that repeatedly. Trump did much better with Hilary. He calmly let her babble, then he delivered simple zingers and dropped the mic. This was just 90 minutes of noise.

To me he did ok in the Republican debates but terrible against Hillary. Biden sure comes up with some weird alternative stats. He needs to be challenged. He also fervently lied about Trump and and about his own actions/inactions.

Trump shouldn't have interrupted so much, but Biden did too.

Biden did his Uncle Sam pose a number of times.

Biden seemed to have rehearsed answers.

Judging by the bulging angry eyes, I would suspect Biden was on some drug or other. He seemed to be confused but quickly caught himself before mis-speaking (too much).

If Wallace couldn't ride herd on these two, I don't hold out much hope for the other debates.

Biden looks just plain old.

The other loss for Biden was when he said no more coal fired plants or gas fired plants will ever be built and would be replaced by renewable energy. And this was one of the very rare moments when Wallace basically said something decent about Trump, saying that the "President is trying to achieve a balance between the environment and the economy." That segment probably won't be good for Biden in the oil and coal states.

It's not that simple. Yes, those middle voters are up for grabs and matter. But voter turnout matters also. And base motivation impacts turnout. This is exactly why all the polls were wrong picking the 2016 winner. If 55% of the people SAY they're voting for someone, but those people are less motivated than the 45% of the people who say they're voting for the other guy, they can still lose. Biden sapped energy out of the far left motivation levels. How that all plays out at the sausage factory who knows. But the fact remains that there are two factors here at play- how the undecided swing AND the base motivation levels. And another important thing, most of the country is not riots in the streets. When you refer to people burning down cities, those are all places we're not winning anyway.

Biden was able to appear more lucid than I had expected.
Biden did screw up pretty badly and spewed nonsense on the "green energy" subject.
Trump blundered several times by interrupting Biden when he was screwing up.

The DOW futures went from +250 to -150 or a swing of 400 points down since the debate ended.

Understand your point completely and don't want Trump to be a "nice guy". It's not a matter of being "presidential" as you say. It's an obvious difference of opinion on what's more effective. Trump has the high ground on the issues. Calmly letting Biden babble for 2 minutes and then eviscerate him with facts- MIC drop. Many of the people who watched the debate don't know a lot of information that you typically hear at a Trump rally because they haven't heard any of it from 90% of the media. They have been fed a completely one-sided story, almost all anti-Trump. This was Trump's perfect opportunity to deliver that message to those people. All they heard was 90 minutes of noise and probably won't watch again. That's assuming if Biden ever does another debate, which I highly doubt.

If he could just exercise some self control, Bden would sink himself, Trumps done the job, but thats who he is, he gets pissed and he hates losing more than anything

I'll agree with you 100% But........my point is that Trump didn't need to talk over both Biden and Wallace, because all he had to do was to let Joe talk and hang himself. I think he actually helped Biden by not letting him say very much..............because everyone knows that when Biden starts talking, that's when he starts screwing up.

Biden would have messed up several times if Trump would have just let him speak and dig a whole for himself. But Trump kept saving him by interrupting.

I got up and watched the debate at 0300 so I'd be fresh to watch it.

I have a few reactions to the debate that have not been voiced so far. First off, I think Biden did far better than I had anticipated. I'm not a Biden supporter by any means. I do don't think he won the debate by a long stretch. I do think he survived this debate. I don't think voting for Joe is going to collapse. However, that leads me into my second point: I think he did way to good a job of explaining himself and his policies. On issues like COVID, he's for way more governmental control than most people are willing to accept. I think he's much too divisive on issues of Race for it to be pallatable. I also think a good number of his responses (remarkably cogent as they were) were about a decade out of date.

Next, let me give you KYHillCHick's reaction: she could not get over Biden's eyes. She called them "demon eyes" and "X-Files eyes." I think they were just dialated pupils, probably from whatever bug juice they gave him so Joe didn't fall asleep at the podium. However, those eyes were a huge turnoff for the 'HillChick. I'm sure a bunch of other folks saw them too. I wasn't creeped out, but she was.

Whenever I hear "I'm going bring in a panel of experts . . ." or "we're going to assemble the best minds. . ." I understand exactly what's going down. The speaker doesn't have a clue, doesn't have a plan, and is filling the time with empty hoo-haw. If you go back to the debate transcript, you'll see Biden did a huge amount of this on issues of Law and Order and the Environment. I'm sorry. If you don't have a plan better than "form a committee" you're a doofus. It's no better than Obama's blue-freakin'-ribbon panels and fill-in-the-blank-summits. Last night was the time for big plans with bold strokes, The committees and the think tanks should have already concluded and a plan adopted.

Lastly: Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining, Joe. I suffered a major career meltdown during the Obama years. I went through 99 weeks of unemployment and still couldn't find a job. I had another bout of 26+ weeks unemployment just before Trump took office. I lost many $10's of thousands of dollars of wages in the Obama years and dramatically had to pull in my horns to make things work out. I had to take crappy jobs in crappy companies in crappy towns that were hours away from home. The last thing I need to hear out of Joe Biden's piehole is how great the economy was in the Obama years. Obama said my job was never coming back, Joe. His stinking "Affordable Care Act" health insurance cost me $5000 for first month's premiums. When I bitched about it, some social justice warrior told me that was paybacks for my white priviledge. My luck turned around just after Donald J. Trump took office, and it's been nothing but blue skies since. Joe, you and your turdboy president were a major source of unhappiness for 8 stinking years. Bite me, Joe!

Stating the obvious, Mr Trump is not a political animal in the DC politics arena, business politics he has down cold. Hiden was almost born in DC politics, he can stand up and make a showing with not a clue as to whats going on or what he should be doing.

Read before the debate that the incumbent rarely does well in the first debate. He's usually over confident and fails to prepare. I think that's what we saw (in spades) last night and well as a president who's temperament is not suited to these types of debates.

The overwhelming majority of people have already made up their minds, but there is apparently a small but very real fraction of "undecideds". Given how close elections have been they could be critical. Most of these undecideds are probably women.

Biden came prepared, what ever chemical jump start he got before the debate lasted the whole ninety minutes. The train wreck we all hoped for didn't happen.

I think President Trump came at Biden hard trying to make him stumble, he didn't, insulting Joe Biden does not play well in a debate, make President Trump look mean and petty, exactly what's gonna turn off women. Same thing with constantly interrupting Biden.

The positives going for the President are overwhelming, his record, this election is his to lose. Next time he needs to STFU with the insults and interruptions and clearly state the positives.

Finally, at this point nothing can be done about mail-in voting, its gonna happen. Only chance we have is vigilance, everywhere.

Where would one go look for discarded ballots?

AMERICA GOT WHAT IT WANTED AND IT WAS TERRIBLE:

For all the people who are upset about last night’s horrible debate, they should pause and ask themselves: wasn’t that just an accurate reflection of where we are as a nation? Two septuagenarians bashing each other with bursts of bombastic bullshittery and competing whatabouts is the content you will find on Facebook and cable news every single day. To the extent people are disappointed, remind yourself: these men both have nearly 90 percent ratings with the two largest political parties in America. They both bested huge fields of candidates to get their respective roles. This is the show you asked for, and you got it.

I rewatched the 2016 debates in anticipation of this one and one of the things you discover is that even as Hillary Clinton was consistently winning on points and substance, Donald Trump was winning the key moments that stood out. Along the way, while you may remember “you’d be in jail”, this was actually a substantive series of debates - including Chris Wallace’s! - where you learned things from both candidates and heard commitments about what they’d do as president.

This was not the case last night. From just a few minutes in, it was clear that Joe Biden was being Joe Biden - not the manufactured statesman who represents a return to normalcy and rising above the muck, but the pompous Delaware Senator who insults people, interrupts, refuses to engage, and engages in a milder Mid-Atlantic form of Trump’s New York bombast, repeatedly calling the president a “clown”, saying “shut up man”, and calling him “the worst president America has ever had” - far from the redemptive offering his prepackaged campaign has presented to the country. http://vlt.tc/4352

Perhaps there was nothing Wallace could have done in this situation, but his choice to engage repeatedly just didn’t work. It resulted in repeated instances of Biden talking for two minutes in which he’d throw out multiple claims about Trump, Trump would interrupt with a rejoinder, Wallace would tell Trump to stop talking, and then at the end of the two minutes Wallace would move on to the next question. Trump, infuriated, would bulldoze him and respond anyway. Biden would interrupt with his denial. And on and on.

The result was utterly unsatisfying. Rather than allow the two men to batter each other, Wallace kept trying to seize control. This is, in fairness, in his manner. Having done Fox News Sunday quite a lot during his tenure, I know that he runs one of the most strict panels in the business. He does not like cross-talk or interrupting, he wants order from his panelists, and he will quickly shut you down if you engage in that type of heated back and forth.

This is an old school approach to television panels, and not one that I personally favor because I think it’s less interesting than television where people can jump in and argue. But regardless of preference, it’s also one that just doesn’t work when you have not one but two candidates who don’t respect the rules and meander from subject to subject in avoidance of questions.

This isn’t to say I could’ve done a better job! Wallace’s position was untenable, equipped with a sequence of rules and agreed upon formats and segments that was blown out of the water. But when the candidates are beating the crap out of each other over an issue, you don’t get the plot back by insisting they shift to forest management and electric cars. And if you’re going to shut down the president by teasing a question that never comes, it should probably be on an issue of less significance than Roe v. Wade.

Most Republicans will probably go after Wallace for bias. http://vlt.tc/4355 That somewhat misses the point, which is that you can be biased and still moderate a good debate. That said, it’s impossible to avoid the biased nature of many of the questions asked last night. Wallace’s frame of Critical Race Theory as “racial sensitivity training” was particularly egregious. At a time when Robin DiAngelo and Ibram X. Kendi are best-selling authors getting paid through the roof prices to spout their message, pretending those two things are the same requires a level of ignorance of the subject that is possible only if you still primarily read all the newspapers on paper.

It seems to me a better approach from Wallace would have been to tee up just one question for each segment and then give the candidates more time to batter each other on the subject with the occasional interjection to stick to the point. It’s harder in such a format to just say, as Biden did on packing the Supreme Court, “I'm not going to answer the question.” http://vlt.tc/4362 But that’s assuming that we retain this old-school solo moderator television format, with two minute answers followed by one minute responses, which seems so very tired to me. These old limitations are ridiculous in the age of unlimited bandwidth and three hour podcasts that are 100 million dollar media properties.

A big part of this problem is The Commission on Presidential Debates, which is a relic. Its board consists of Silent Generation and aged Boomer politicians - including one of JFK’s FCC appointees. The Commission's approach creates debates that are unintelligible and with moderators who cannot effectively extract the truth. They are asking 1980s questions in a 1970s format. It is the reason there are no internet based debates. Its executive director, the same since its inception, has led it since before the end of the Cold War.

The olds running the debates must end. The instant feedback poll from CBS News showed 83 percent of voters were dissatisfied, with just 17 percent positive about the debate - and that’s not just the fault of the candidates. http://vlt.tc/435l In an era where we get more enlightenment from Charlamagne Tha God interviews and Joe Rogan podcasts than Sunday morning sitdowns, it’s high time we would be much better off with longer answers and a debate format with a minimum of two moderators, one coming from the left and another from the right, asking questions of the candidates that more accurately frame the issues both sides care about. But so long as we have the Commission, that would be a bridge too far.

So, who benefits? It seems to me neither side benefits from last night’s debate, which is good for Joe Biden, because as I wrote yesterday, Donald Trump needs the debates to matter. The only degree to which it benefits Trump is that he successfully did the thing he always does: pull his opponents down into the muck with him. http://vlt.tc/435w “No actual transcription could possibly do justice to these 96 minutes of shouts, insults, interruptions, stray thoughts, and loose babble. It was like witnessing an argument about an arcane procedural rule during a senior bingo night at a nursing home in purgatory. Biden’s denials on Hunter’s financial dealings, for instance, rang false when he seemed to fall back onto a “don’t come after my family, buster” attitude and then immediately went after Trump’s family. This muddles the issue and leads to outcomes like this, where 57 percent of people say it’s likely Biden and his inner circle have enriched themselves from his political career. http://vlt.tc/435d

Voters know what they’re getting now with both of these candidates as men, but they really don’t know what they’re getting from them as policies. Biden’s policy answers on the Green New Deal (it does work but he doesn’t support it?), on law and order (getting people in Portland to sit down and talk?), and on what he’d do to reopen (get PPE to schools and businesses but also lockdown until nationwide vaccine?) were particularly muddled, and that’s before you get to the more politically dramatic questions of packing the court and eliminating the filibuster.

Biden’s been winning to this point with that muddle by seeming above the fray, a return to the golden days of 2015. After this debate, it seems clearer that when questioned, this is not what he represents. Essentially, his answer is a non-answer, that Trump is bad and in his absence we will muddle through to normalcy. That does allow a critique of his campaign I would expect Trump to hammer in the next debate, which I assume is being moderated by that young up-and-comer Dan Rather.

Like I said on one of the other threads; Wallace will surprise some folks. He asked the same questions to both candidates and tried to keep it to a two minute response. He had problems doing that. Both men talked over him but Trump interrupted the most. A lot of the Wallace follow-ups got lost because of the chaos.

I wasn't too impressed with the debate and my first impression is that DJT is "an angry man". But, after reflecting on it for while I know he has the right to be angry. He has been the subject of one investigation after another and a phony impeachment by the House. I am also glad to have such a fighter and angry man who is defending America. He will fight tooth and nail to make America great. He won't put up with any bull$hit from the left. I With that in mind, Donald Trump won that debate. It required Joe to be on the defensive and showed America where his plan for America will be the beginning of the end for us.

Most FOX pundits I have watched have given Trump a close win overall. I agree with them that Biden also got a win because he didn’t fold. So many on here said he would do that. And when that didn’t happen, Biden looked good or at least better than expected by default.

Trump had plenty of chances to let Biden hang himself, but couldn’t shut up long enough to let him do that.

Biden knows how to look directly into the camera and smile. That is how Sarah Palin used to connect and run the table.

No doubt, Trump has learned from this and will do better on Oct. 15.

Disappointed in Trump during parts of this debate. He did have a couple of great one-liners and was on point with answering the questions. Where he really missed out was on several opportunities to just let Joe be Joe. As an arm chair quarterback I would suggest his team let's him give the creeper some breathing space. Normally in a title fight you get the guy on the ropes and don't let up but this is a different kind of opponent. Back off Sir, and let the man hang himself. No one wants to see an Alzheimer's patient get mugged, even if he is on some of the finest medical grade meth available. You, Mr. President, robbed not only yourself but the entire nation the exquisite opportunity to let 'Stammerin Joe' completely fall apart...I mean he did, just not to the extent he could have. If he can't talk, he can't gaffe.

That said, I will likely remain unsatisfied during this election on media refusal to follow up on some of the points made. Did Joe's son not get paid what can only be called an extraordinary salary to perform work that he was at best questionably qualified. If so, why? How did he get the jobs and what did he do while 'rendering' his services? Even with my personal delusions of grandeur I have not yet concocted a scenario where I could earn $50,000 or more per month. I mean that kid must be S-P-E-C-I-A-L. Joe should be PROUD to answer questions about how he deserved that kind of work and beat out the competition with his awesome skills.

Finally, It's perfectly fine to call out white supremacists. That contingent is like 5 guys that live in their mom's basement...or jail. OTOH Biden cannot call out the socialist ticket, he is too tied to it. Middle America is not knowingly up for all out communism. Try this "I completely condemn racist violence of any kind and white supremacy would certainly qualify. Say Joe, what is your stance on domestic terrorist organizations like ANTIFA?"

Trump never would have gotten elected if he listened to his advisers. They've been spouting the same crap like you're spouting... "don't interrupt", "don't be a meanie", "you'll offend the college educated commie suburb women", "you yell too much", etc.

Several on here have already said this...

Trump had plenty of chances to let Biden hang himself, but couldn’t shut up long enough to let him do that.

Biden knows how to look directly into the camera and smile. That is how Sarah Palin used to connect and run the table.

IMO the first debate was a debacle. Nobody won and no undecided voters were convinced to vote for either candidate. I expect Trump to do much better in the next debate. He had no idea what to expect from Wallace or Biden so he went out trying to land a knockout punch in the first round. Biden exceeded expectations but his handlers know he is in decline and might not hold up as well at the next debate. As many predicted, Wallace did not remain invisible and continually defended Biden. I really thought he would be more impartial but I was wrong. Trump became more agitated trying to debate both of them. My idea of America aligns more closely with Trump's idea of America than with Biden's
