I've known Ken for maybe thirty years and unfortunately had him as my first editor. He is indeed a pretentious prick. Actually, he is a self-centered, hateful, officious prick, as well ... words fail to describe his prickiness.
He got fired from Wolfe Publishing for being all gushy and feeling all of the lady worker's tits. Dave Wolfe hated the self-righteous bastard anyway and told me that firing him was as satisfying as "popping a big infected pimple on my ass."
Anyway, I've had the displeasure of spending more than a few hours with Ken the Creep. And I needed to dry clean my clothes afterwords, the stench was so bad.
Oh yeah, the kids. Two daughters and one son. I've met the son and talked with him; he hates the old son of a bitch. So do the daughters. I suspect some form of abuse there.
Allen Day hired a PI to investigate Ken's education. Turns out his ThD is from a diploma printing outfit ... no classes, you just pay $50 for a diploma and they send it to you. Nope, no PhD or any other educational credits, except graduating from high school in Rotten Crotch, North Carolina.
What totally amazes me is that some on the 24HCF are totally convinced that Ken was a great writer, that he's hunted a great deal (he absolutely HAS NOT) and some kind of maven of the gunny writing industry. Trust me, none of the above is true. In fact, "Ken the Creep" comes from gun writers.
I was on a few prairie dog hunts with him and he stayed in his motel room; not willing to go out with the guys. And then, of course, he regaled us with glorious tales of his amazing hunts at dinner. Total and absolute bullshit. We all rolled our eyes and laughed behind his back.
And a Social Security check of $700 a month? Obviously, he has had poor jobs that paid very little ... otherwise, he'd be getting $1,200+
Anyway, I simply had to write to one of the old bag of fart's detractors, YOU ... and tell you that you are totally right.

OK, here's mine (I mean, other than all the women I slept with back then).....
A few years back Ed hosted a campfire gathering at his very nice East Texas place, I drove there from San Antonio Texas via Sherman Texas, quite considerably out of my way but I needed to pick up some cool reenacting stuff from www.CrazyCrow.com , clothing and footwear, the stuff where its hard to order the correct size online. Heavy traffic/construction on I 35 made it a 14 plus hour day in hot weather.
Arrive at Ed's late in the evening right after a violent storm had just swept through, the dirt road was blocked by a fallen tree just short of his place. I walked in, everyone was asleep or bedding down for the night. No worries, I walked back and slept in my car. A beautiful cool night after the storm, which must have blown away all the mosquitoes. No worries, if bigfoot showed up I was armed to the teeth and I had my good dog along for the ride. Next day was a long, hot day at Ed's, no electricity, trees down left and right, including right into the porch and into Gene's truck.
The trees took out the power and IIRC no water was available, runs to town for bottled water were made. A great time was had by all but no showers were available.
I learned through Steelhead that campfire gossip had it that I stunk.
I wasn't aware we had campfire gossip, not like that, but apparently we do. I wasn't aware either that I smelled that bad that day.

But..... because of that day, Steelhead now owes me $2.00 American

Tennessee's got some damn polite folk, I was going to a 24HR pig hunt and blew a #4 injector line on my diesel Dodge, called a big buddy of mine and told him which interstate yardstick i was sitting on, within minutes two light tan Tennessee unmarked DOT Hi-PO guys showed up with a rolloff wrecker behind their cars, they hauled my butt to the Cookeville Tn. Dodge dealership, outta nowhere up walked the shop foreman with a giant wad of keys in his hand, opened the garage, changed my injector line and didn't charge me a dime for labor.
And this was at 9 PM, made it on up to the pig camp by about 10 I guess, told Wifey when I got home, if we ever move we're going to Central Tennessee. Nice looking country and good folk!

just wow: The man has been dead now for quite a while, and this pops up to slur his memory. Motive for doing such an act? I find it hard to believe that steve wrote that, even in confidence, it does not sit very well with being catholic, which i do know something about. i have met birdy a number of times, like the guy, and find it hard to believe that the people i have ran into at those gatherings would make a remark about him stinking even in the circumstances and even if true. The comment about Howell not knowing anything is silly. I have a good part of his book collection, he was well read, i have part of the things he used in testing, and i have the opus on case resizing that he wrote, a one of a kind technical book. But good Lord it's hard to understand why continue to bring up this stuff which steelhead did for an awful long time against an old man, now deceased. We all get our just rewards i like to think eventually.

I met Ken a couple of times. I stayed in a cabin with him(that he stiffed me for on the rental cost) in Raton NM, at one of the first Campfire get-togethers. I talked with him about a lot of things and one thing that struck me as as strange is that he told me that he never killed a whitetail deer or hog. Another thing that struck me as strange is that we were taking about something and he contradicted himself and I ask him about it. He almost exploded.Told me to shut the eff up and called me stupid. Then he calmed down and started talking like nothing happened. I got up and walked away,with him asking where I was going. Sounded like he was pleading for attention. It was pathetic. A few other things happened that made me think that he wasn't what he presented himself to be. His knowledge of rifle cartridges wasn't what I thought it should be considering that big blue book he wrote. We actually found a copy of that book in a gun shop in Raton and brought it back for him to sign. Ken wasn't perfect. None of us are but most of us realize that fact and work on fixing our faults to some degree. Ken had a superiority complex. He thought that he was the smartest man in the room. Before anyone bashes me,ask yourself how much did you really know about him. Did you meet him? Stay in the same cabin as him? Spend hours talking to him? If you did,think about your conversations with him. Think hard. I have the Tennessee jackasses on ignore so please don't quote them so I have to see what they spew, And since I know Scott,and have for a long time. I saw Ken Howell be a blatantly condescending, sanctimonious, mean spirited prick to many people on here many times. He reminded me much of my paternal grandfather, who was also a mean spirited, condescending little prick. I never could stand him either. Men don't suddenly become better men and deserving of respect and reverence just because they die. Hell, everybody does that.
I had many visits with Ken... first at the hospital here where he was airlifted, then at the nursing home, then a few times a year at his house where I'd drive 4 hours and arrive in the afternoon, visit till late at night, crash in a back room, visit a bit in the morning and head out early.
Socially we had a lot in common, Welch/Cherokee, grew up in what I call 'dirt', no city streets to play in... dirt, fields, groves.
A chitload we didn't share... I'm much more a hunter, I've shot 10s of thousands of rounds, reload and such, but to hunt. I don't shoot for fun or competition, not even at the gatherings I help put on. And any technical interests I have is archery. I've never read an article, or book or anything gun related by Ken or any other 'gun writer' ever.
I didn't know Ken from Adam when I first met him and he laughed when I told him that as he was introduced as a famous gun writer. I just knew there was an old man that was in a bad place, alone and far from home with no friendly face or someone to advocate for him against the uncaring nursing home world.
When finally leaving the nursing home Ken insisted I take one of his few remaining Blue books which he signed. I did because it made him happy. One of our former members here came to visit Ken at the nursing home before she went into the marines, I had dinner with her later and she is an upstanding person. When she graduated the marines I gave her Ken's book as a gift, she would appreciate it as she had mentioned wanting one. So the circle of life goes.
Ken was frustrated with me about my belief in Christ's life example plus the Holy Spirit as my link to God... and my disbelief of man's religion and Paul's speaking for Christ. I know at times he was really frustrated but never did he get disrespectful even in debate. I think he was honestly confused that others would be offended when he put forth his understanding of the bible and religion. Now if I was a self-absorbed kind of person that as soon as someone starts a story, I think of a similar one of my own and break in before the first person is finished... I'd be offended if I was told to hold on and let me finish. I know a bunch of people like that and they irk the chit out of me.
Sitting there I could see Ken's frustration wasn't at me for interrupting, it was at himself and his condition where he couldn't communicate the way he wanted to. As soon as he finished his point he would wait for my response, listen and re'respond or not.
He told me once he wished it was like the indian tribe method of the talking stick... the one holding the stick talked then passed it on when done so the next person could talk.
His frustration of communication was evident, he was truly sad folks were so offended by it, he considered it his fault.

I saw Ken Howell be a blatantly condescending, sanctimonious, mean spirited prick to many people on here many times. He reminded me much of my paternal grandfather, who was also a mean spirited, condescending little prick. I never could stand him either. Men don't suddenly become better men and deserving of respect and reverence just because they die. Hell, everybody does that.
Again, interesting, sometimes I think that folks that somehow challenge folks that think they are superior are the issue or can be. Simply being challenged is an issue to some.

I had many visits with Ken... first at the hospital here where he was airlifted, then at the nursing home, then a few times a year at his house where I'd drive 4 hours and arrive in the afternoon, visit till late at night, crash in a back room, visit a bit in the morning and head out early.
Socially we had a lot in common, Welch/Cherokee, grew up in what I call 'dirt', no city streets to play in... dirt, fields, groves.
A chitload we didn't share... I'm much more a hunter, I've shot 10s of thousands of rounds, reload and such, but to hunt. I don't shoot for fun or competition, not even at the gatherings I help put on. And any technical interests I have is archery. I've never read an article, or book or anything gun related by Ken or any other 'gun writer' ever.
I didn't know Ken from Adam when I first met him and he laughed when I told him that as he was introduced as a famous gun writer. I just knew there was an old man that was in a bad place, alone and far from home with no friendly face or someone to advocate for him against the uncaring nursing home world.
When finally leaving the nursing home Ken insisted I take one of his few remaining Blue books which he signed. I did because it made him happy. One of our former members here came to visit Ken at the nursing home before she went into the marines, I had dinner with her later and she is an upstanding person. When she graduated the marines I gave her Ken's book as a gift, she would appreciate it as she had mentioned wanting one. So the circle of life goes.
Ken was frustrated with me about my belief in Christ's life example plus the Holy Spirit as my link to God... and my disbelief of man's religion and Paul's speaking for Christ. I know at times he was really frustrated but never did he get disrespectful even in debate. well i knew him for an awful long time, long time before i ever heard of the campfire. He could be prickly, he didn't put up with fools lightly. And he sure didn't have much money. I am not gonna name names, but i know some checks i wrote him personally he signed over to others on the campfire that were claiming need of some kind, i check endorsements. I remember the names, they never paid him back either. This issue with howell isn't the only thing, as others have mentioned slams at family members, dead kids and so on, how do you defend someone that does that. there is a guy up in montana that has a mighty fine gun collection, took me quite a while to figure out why he quite posting for a long while on here. Ken was a complex individual that most on here never saw or heard of until after his stroke. I was the beneficiary of his kindness many many times, among other things he chose to call me a friend. I don't get many that do that. And it struck me after his giving me that 358 norma magnum made by the same gunsmith elmer used. I was asking him some questions on ballistics, he wheeled/hobbled himself into the computer and was generating all kinds of things. He knew my mind better than i did in some ways. I got from him a lot of reading material. He knew when i got on something i learned all i could about it, and that was his way of leading me known paths of a technical nature. But the point is Ken has been dead awhile. What kind of person really pounds the memory of somebody in the ground.

I remember welll the dinner the night he got out of the rest home. A few of us know that you and a couple of others saved his life and gave him a few more years. I also know the tragedy in your own life. You may have some issues with religion, so do i by the way, formalized religion anyway, but you are one of the few people that i have ran into that "walks the walk" that has done so much for people without looking for credit. and you make the finest kind fried fish in the world.

never met Dr Howell personally but one of the first posts i made here was about a personal betrayal and had no one to talk to about. Ken went well out of his way to counsel me and was the means of restoring the relationship that was almost destroyed. anybody can post crap about someone but most of it is sour grapes. only a Shist heel would dump on a dead man

It would, however, be easy to do stir on every single thread there is on the campfire, but I don't. I also don't really feel like hiding out in the closet. As a hunter/ shooter I don't think my opinions are any less valuable than yours or anyone elses. So, I settle for a compromise. I'm not a member of very many forums. Steve Timm got pissed at Ken Howell for what Steve considered as insulting the Roman Catholic Church. Steve is really thin skinned about that, a lot more than other Catholics on this forum, including Rick Bin. Knowing that, it’s not hard to believe that Steve wrote exactly what S H published.
I believe I can assure anyone that if Rick has taken any action, such as banning, religion would play no part in his decision. But I’ll be awfully surprised if SH is banned. This is the second time in a week that Dorf posted that PRIVATE message, expressly for the purpose of violating the confidentiality requested by Steve and in Dorf’s world he was killing two birds with one stone since Dorf didn’t like either Ken nor Steve. It was no secret that Ken and Steve had different religious opinions and that Ken had issues with Catholicism but that isn’t my problem and I differed from Ken regarding the my way or the hiway approach to religion. I liked Ken even though I never met him and thought he was a smart guy with a quick wit. I’m not sure why running him down now is a good idea except that Dorf is just now finding out how the bulk of the campfire feels about him and that mustn’t be a good feeling. I imagine that he needs the affirmation of his 3 or 4 friends here by looking for people to pick on but picking on the dead is easier and much safer.

Dan, You are correct sir and I’ve ignored plenty of Dorf’s attacks but the ignore button isn’t an option for me. I either choose to ignore or I don’t. I’m not the type to ignore bullies, online or in person when they insist on pursuing their little crusade. I generally try to ignore Dorf and his feeble followers but sometimes I CHOOSE to respond and I do so with the full knowledge that what I say will piss somebody off because, after all, it is the campfire.

Either way I have no beef with you personally and apologize for hurting your feelings based upon the harshness of my post to you. We all have a threshold and we all respond differently. Some people run away, some gather their friends to fight their battles for them and clean up the filth they leave behind, others might use the ignore button and a few will reach their saturation point and bite back. In any case when you consistently take up for a pathetic excuse of human fecal material like Dorf you get classified as one of his buddies. We know who and what a troll is around here and we all choose to deal with them within the confines of our capacity. I’m not old, fat or saying anything that I wouldn’t say in person and I’m very capable of handling myself in the way I’ve become accustomed. 😉

So much for a rational approach - although possibly naive, it normally seems best to try that first even though failure is not surprising.
