Giving someone a bag of gold doesn’t mean you’re going to get a bag of gold. Getting what you give is more abstract than a this for that type proposition. If you give someone something because you want to bring them happiness then you’re intentions aren’t selfish so the act of bringing someone happiness by giving them something also brings the giver happiness when they see that they’ve brought happiness....if that makes sense.
At the same time if you try to bring meanness or unhappiness to someone then you’re likely to be unhappy. If your heart is angry and you want to bring that anger to bear on others then you’re likely to be angry, either at your intended recipient, at others or most importantly at yourself....once again I don’t know if I’m being clear but I know what I’m trying to say. Bad chit has a way of coming back to you just like if you were to go through life bringing happiness to others....it has a way of coming back to you, the giver, often in intangible ways.
I haven’t gotten involved in your other threads but I did want to point out that you were 100% wrong in your assertion that the good men here somehow had a duty to come to your internet aid. The good men here don’t generally get involved in childish rants nor do they involve themselves in the pile on threads. That’s partly why their reputation here is what makes them good men, they aren’t interested in bringing you or others any misery or anger, they prefer to bring support and happiness to those that need it. You have to be happy and give happiness in order to be open to receiving it. Lately I’ve noticed that you are NOT happy .....your posts speak volumes. The way you responded to Doug on the Leupold thread and your posts here on the campfire are evidence of your unhappiness. I’ve chosen to not respond to your previous posts because I have no desire to bring you any further unhappiness but those posts were not constructive and were “mean spirited”. You chose to act in a way that brings upon you what you’ve “given”. You seem to be itching for a fight everywhere you go and then when someone obliges you get upset. You can’t have it both ways so ultimately it’s up to you to decide if you’re going to carry anger and hatred or love and happiness.
I’m sure that the stress you have with the medical issues of family can be emotionally taxing but you’ll not find happiness by taking your frustrations out on guys on the internet. If this place is really getting to you like I think it is I would suggest taking some time out to enjoy life with those people that truly love you, your family. Try to bring some joy into your life and make memories with those that are really important to you. Don’t try to bring misery to those that you don’t like on the internet expecting that will bring you joy because as you’ve seen it just brings more misery.....there’s that pesky “getting what you give” thing again.

But, the tide was turned and eventually the fire saw him for what he was. The fanboys melted away, the chatter died down, Steelhead left, I guess? Giving someone a bag of gold doesn’t mean you’re going to get a bag of gold. Getting what you give is more abstract than a this for that type proposition. If you give someone something because you want to bring them happiness then you’re intentions aren’t selfish so the act of bringing someone happiness by giving them something also brings the giver happiness when they see that they’ve brought happiness....if that makes sense.
At the same time if you try to bring meanness or unhappiness to someone then you’re likely to be unhappy. If your heart is angry and you want to bring that anger to bear on others then you’re likely to be angry, either at your intended recipient, at others or most importantly at yourself....once again I don’t know if I’m being clear but I know what I’m trying to say. Bad chit has a way of coming back to you just like if you were to go through life bringing happiness to others....it has a way of coming back to you, the giver, often in intangible ways.
I haven’t gotten involved in your other threads but I did want to point out that you were 100% wrong in your assertion that the good men here somehow had a duty to come to your internet aid. The good men here don’t generally get involved in childish rants nor do they involve themselves in the pile on threads. That’s partly why their reputation here is what makes them good men, they aren’t interested in bringing you or others any misery or anger, they prefer to bring support and happiness to those that need it. There are a lot of good men here and they have NO requirement to join you in your one man crusade, that doesn’t diminish their “goodness” it reinforces it.
I don’t have any problems with you nor do I wish you anything but happiness. I decided to answer this post because your question is a fair question and I felt it deserved a fair reply which is what I’ve tried to give you. You have to be happy and give happiness in order to be open to receiving it. Lately I’ve noticed that you are NOT happy .....your posts speak volumes. The way you responded to Doug on the Leupold thread and your posts here on the campfire are evidence of your unhappiness. I’ve chosen to not respond to your previous posts because I have no desire to bring you any further unhappiness but those posts were not constructive and were “mean spirited”. You chose to act in a way that brings upon you what you’ve “given”. You seem to be itching for a fight everywhere you go and then when someone obliges you get upset. You can’t have it both ways so ultimately it’s up to you to decide if you’re going to carry anger and hatred or love and happiness.
I’m sure that the stress you have with the medical issues of family can be emotionally taxing but you’ll not find happiness by taking your frustrations out on guys on the internet. If this place is really getting to you like I think it is I would suggest taking some time out to enjoy life with those people that truly love you, your family. Try to bring some joy into your life and make memories with those that are really important to you. You’re in a different category, at least in my opinion. You have very few posts that are kind or helpful, mostly you complain or act as though you’re a victim. I don’t think you really are a victim and my opinion of you is that you’re a regular, hardworking guy that has a lot of frustrations (like we all do) and family medical issues that cause you concern. You might have a few cocktails in the evening to lubricate your online personality and that can backfire. I've done breakfast machaca before, but I had to leave at 4am to work, daughter and grandkids came over to help the wife paint cabinets, they finished it off with just enough I had a late lunch burrito when I got home.

Oregon was always logging country until the spotted owl happened in the 80's. My dad retired from the logging industry in '79. Doctors said he had a 20% chance of a fatal heart attack the first year, 40% the next, until at 5 years he would most certainly be dead. 2 packs of Pall Malls for 40 years 'll do that to ya. He set to building a new place and within a year he had mom and I set up on a new spot on an acre in pine country, just in case something happened.
He beat the odds and lived to be 81, 22 years after the diagnosis. He was tough, he was an Oregonian. He split wood with a double-bitted axe. Never used a maul. Showed me how to hit the wood and let the axe tip over to one side to throw the wood apart. Taught me to throw an axe too, and I taught my kids. We hunted blacktail deer as long as I can remember and I still do. The first photo of me on a hunt was when mom tagged a big 4x4, her first and last. I was three. It's been in my blood since birth.
We had to grow a big vegetable garden and orchard with many different kinds of apples and pears to make ends meet. All the neighbors grew enough to share and we helped each other get fish and game too. Oregonians were a self-reliant bunch that stuck together and stuck it out. I count myself among the lucky ones. I didn't waste my life on drugs and booze, didn't go to prison for stealing a neighbors car or breaking into their shed looking for gas. As young as I could I worked, bucking hay or repairing neighborhood kids bikes, picking beans, paying my way into more fishing tackle any way I could so I could chase those rainbow trout in Mosby Creek. Most people thought Mosby Creek was just full of chms and suckers, but if you knew where to look, there were trout. I'd ride my bike 20 miles if I thought there was a shallow riffle that might hold a fish. Good times to be a kid.
Sometime in my 53 years everything changed, with the people, in Oregon. Now we have queers and skinny jeans. Meth addicts and legalized dope. Back in the day we carried jackpine clubs in the truck in case "hippies" decided to give us trouble out in the woods. Everyone had a 30/30 in the back window of the truck. Never quit praying for my dads salvation, which, after 49 years, she got her wish.
Dad was exceptional in one way, he wasn't a drinker. If he had one Budweiser a year it was a celebration. He might have one sit in the fridge for a year or two, then one day, it was time. It was a good day when dad popped a Bud. Most of the loggers were heavy drinkers.
Mostly, we spent our off time working the garden or canning what we could for winter. Oregon was a great place to be, a kid could do it all.
Now we got skinny jean transplants and carpet munchers from California.

Fireball, I think northern Dave addressed your question best and as far as good men go I think he’s definitely in that group. Giving someone a bag of gold doesn’t mean you’re going to get a bag of gold. Getting what you give is more abstract than a this for that type proposition. If you give someone something because you want to bring them happiness then you’re intentions aren’t selfish so the act of bringing someone happiness by giving them something also brings the giver happiness when they see that they’ve brought happiness....if that makes sense.
At the same time if you try to bring meanness or unhappiness to someone then you’re likely to be unhappy. If your heart is angry and you want to bring that anger to bear on others then you’re likely to be angry, either at your intended recipient, at others or most importantly at yourself....once again I don’t know if I’m being clear but I know what I’m trying to say. Bad chit has a way of coming back to you just like if you were to go through life bringing happiness to others....it has a way of coming back to you, the giver, often in intangible ways.

The good men here don’t generally get involved in childish rants nor do they involve themselves in the pile on threads. You can’t have it both ways so ultimately it’s up to you to decide if you’re going to carry anger and hatred or love and happiness.
I’m sure that the stress you have with the medical issues of family can be emotionally taxing but you’ll not find happiness by taking your frustrations out on guys on the internet. If this place is really getting to you like I think it is I would suggest taking some time out to enjoy life with those people that truly love you, your family. Fireball, I think northern Dave addressed your question best and as far as good men go I think he’s definitely in that group. Giving someone a bag of gold doesn’t mean you’re going to get a bag of gold. Getting what you give is more abstract than a this for that type proposition. If you give someone something because you want to bring them happiness then you’re intentions aren’t selfish so the act of bringing someone happiness by giving them something also brings the giver happiness when they see that they’ve brought happiness....if that makes sense.
At the same time if you try to bring meanness or unhappiness to someone then you’re likely to be unhappy. If your heart is angry and you want to bring that anger to bear on others then you’re likely to be angry, either at your intended recipient, at others or most importantly at yourself....once again I don’t know if I’m being clear but I know what I’m trying to say. Bad chit has a way of coming back to you just like if you were to go through life bringing happiness to others....it has a way of coming back to you, the giver, often in intangible ways.

I've lived in Oregon all but one year, when I was in Alaska living in my truck and hiking the backcountry.
Oregon was always logging country until the spotted owl happened in the 80's. My dad retired from the logging industry in '79. Doctors said he had a 20% chance of a fatal heart attack the first year, 40% the next, until at 5 years he would most certainly be dead. 2 packs of Pall Malls for 40 years 'll do that to ya. He set to building a new place and within a year he had mom and I set up on a new spot on an acre in pine country, just in case something happened.
He beat the odds and lived to be 81, 22 years after the diagnosis. He was tough, he was an Oregonian. He split wood with a double-bitted axe. Never used a maul. Showed me how to hit the wood and let the axe tip over to one side to throw the wood apart. Taught me to throw an axe too, and I taught my kids. We hunted blacktail deer as long as I can remember and I still do. The first photo of me on a hunt was when mom tagged a big 4x4, her first and last. I was three. It's been in my blood since birth.
We had to grow a big vegetable garden and orchard with many different kinds of apples and pears to make ends meet. All the neighbors grew enough to share and we helped each other get fish and game too. Oregonians were a self-reliant bunch that stuck together and stuck it out. I count myself among the lucky ones. I didn't waste my life on drugs and booze, didn't go to prison for stealing a neighbors car or breaking into their shed looking for gas. As young as I could I worked, bucking hay or repairing neighborhood kids bikes, picking beans, paying my way into more fishing tackle any way I could so I could chase those rainbow trout in Mosby Creek. Most people thought Mosby Creek was just full of chms and suckers, but if you knew where to look, there were trout. I'd ride my bike 20 miles if I thought there was a shallow riffle that might hold a fish. Good times to be a kid.
Sometime in my 53 years everything changed, with the people, in Oregon. Now we have queers and skinny jeans. Meth addicts and legalized dope. Back in the day we carried jackpine clubs in the truck in case "hippies" decided to give us trouble out in the woods. Everyone had a 30/30 in the back window of the truck. Lots of jacklighting happened, no one really cared, folks needed meat and did what they had to to get it. Oregon always had a tough crowd. Mom played volleyball and some of those teams from up in the hills were some rough old broads. Loggers wives, she was too, but mom was a gentle soul. Loved the Lord and loved people. Never quit praying for my dads salvation, which, after 49 years, she got her wish.
Dad was exceptional in one way, he wasn't a drinker. If he had one Budweiser a year it was a celebration. He might have one sit in the fridge for a year or two, then one day, it was time. It was a good day when dad popped a Bud. Most of the loggers were heavy drinkers.
Mostly, we spent our off time working the garden or canning what we could for winter. Oregon was a great place to be, a kid could do it all.
Now we got skinny jean transplants and carpet munchers from California.

I fertilized the lawn for the first time since I've been here this spring. Looks better than it ever has. I mow once a week and trim things ever winter. Of course auto sprinklers since that's what I do.

You put yourself out there it's easy for people to snipe at you. You get sniped enough you get toxic. Hell, remember Bristoe and his way beyond funny brand of writing? The guy could have had his own tv show. Even he's pretty melancholy these days.
I'm actually not melancholy at all. It's just that I've reached a place where I've done a lot of things I did until I'm done with 'em. I never want to touch a milling machine or a lathe again. I don't recall the last time I put together a round of ammo.
As for interactive internet,..I still read along a bit. But it's turned into Groundhog Day for me. (This thread is a good example)
Retirement and moving out here in the sticks probably has a lot to do with it all.

I fertilized the lawn for the first time since I've been here this spring. Looks better than it ever has. I mow once a week and trim things ever winter. Of course auto sprinklers since that's what I do.

Cripes. I (we) have been mowing every two days this year. If we waited a week we could bale hay.
Welcome back. I too can't believe you don't raise beef in your yard! What a waste. I get a kick looking around the country. Some folks have the corral right by the house, some prefer a bit of space. I didn't mow my lawn today...........in circle or squares..................rectangles, obloids, parabolic arcs, tangentially, or using derivatives to calculate the shortest path of my lawnmower.
Tomorrow or Thursday will be lawn mowing. As for figuring out the shortest path with calculus, I probably don't even have to break out the slide rule anymore. I can probably take a picture of the yard and find an app at the google play store, show the app the picture, get a diagram and GPS coordinates, turn the GPS feature on in my phone (y'all don't leave that thing on all the time, do ya's? ), and duct tape the phone to the lawnmower handle and follow a curser.
Guys, it's 2109 or something, right? How hard can it be to figure out what geometric pattern you want to use to mow your lawn?

Gonna check them today if I can. Came off a week on the Middle Fork to find that my wife had been dealing with her mother while I was gone. Her mother had broken her femur in the nursing home she was in (it's not clear how she did that as she wheelchair bound). It's been a downhill slide since and she is probably going to pass today.
