Very true. I saw a cow elk that had been hit by a car on 117 just above 36 yesterday. It had been there a while so maybe was hit during the night.
The first year I nearly hit a BIG bull elk on that road south of Quemado. Luckily I was going pretty slow, and dodged left. He was a smart old bull, and luckily spun a 180 and didn't try to beat me across. I missed him by 3-4 feet. I have the distinct memory of looking up at his head, from the seat of a 4x4 Ford pickup.
