Rem 788 carbine in 308 with a tasco 4x. paid about $200 for it at the coast to coast hardware. Put a burris 2.75 on because the hunting crew old timers said 4x is too much scope for the woods (I agree). Took a fork horn and doe with it. The rifle carried like a 10 pound wood fence post and I bought a ruger tang safety in 3006 the following year. The whole crew shot 3006 except for a lone 300 savage 99 and I wanted to get all their 3006 brass for the reloading gear my dad bought.
Don't miss the 788 that much, but regret not saving up and buying what I wanted in the first place... the ruger 77. Still have the ruger and rifle loony-ism has hit and have too many guns to rotate through. Oddly... I've come full circle and like the savage 99 in 300 that was the odd man out when I started hunting.
