While back friend Brad (aka Mac) started a trend by taking some incredible shots of his Lil Sky sitting on a fence post with the Crazies in the back ground.
Would love to see other fence post pics. Here's one of mine..grin
You'd like it Sammers, it's a rock star of a build! And dang it, I lost your addy again please pm me the dang thing one more time I have something to send your way.
mud_bogger - nice pix of a nice rifle. BTW - is that a privy in the background? Homesteader.
Nope. Lil abandon homestead of sorts. Still the house, barn, and handfull of old implements laying around. Somebody did some upkeep on the barn a few years back though.
Check out this fence post.....sorry, no rifle just a really cool whitetail rub near the Canadien border where trees are pretty scarce...my friend was gracious enough to let me pull it out of the ground and take it home.

Pat..only you would un-ass a fencepost and take it home cause deer had rubbed on it...
Mark; Thanks for starting the cool thread Mark and of course thanks to those who joined in to make it so.
This is sort of in the spirit of the thread - I think?
On a fence sits my range saddle and on them both is a Liberty year, tang 77, rebarreled to .308 Norma with a stock I did up from a Richards blank. I did the rust bluing on it as well.
On the same foundation as the previous photo is our eldest daughter's 1903 vintage '96 Swede that she inherited from my late father. I did a bunch of reworking on it for him and then a bit more for her. She likes it as much as he did, which is pretty cool to me.
A woodpile shot of our youngest daughter's 722 with an RKS barrel chambered for .250AI. I installed a 700 trigger, ADL stock with a Decelerator and Campfire special Talley Lightweights.
Lastly, perched on a larch block set upon a yard boulder, we have my 98 wartime action parts gun. I had a .270 Parker Hale Featherweight barrel put on, then added an FN extractor, Timney trigger, Timney Buehler style safety, Wolff mainspring, reworked Husqvarna bottom metal, Wildcat Composite stock and rustbluing by me again.
That's a few of our main hunting rifles anyway.
Thanks to all who've put up photos and to those who still might. It's interesting to see what everyone is running.
Thanks again to you Mark and all the best to you and yours this weekend.

Bet the deer up there have you on a Wanted poster!
Mark, next time I'm in Boz Angelas, we'll have to meet up and talk about the Lee Metcalf. I haven't put any boot tracks in that one yet Still trying to cover all this one

Yeah Bogger, I know where that is... nice spot for the presentation for sure...
A couple more for mudbogger, these before the tang sight was added:
1895 Winchester 30 US
This 1895 is a very accurate rifle. I have five shot groups with 180RN's and the RCBS 30-180-FN cast bullet that are just a bit over an inch at 100 yards. Tang sight and 28" barrel will help shoot some good groups.
Pretty sweet pics Ben...you are still green there too I see...and the Sweet Clover.....find someone with an Apiary on their place and hit them up for some honey...it is the absolute best... sweet clover also has a bunch of protien in it...grows big antlers...
Thanks fellers! Yes, the clover is DEEP! It's taller than the tbar fence posts out here! It's crazy! We're gonna have AWESOME elk and deer racks this year!
Dober, they both get alot of use. My dad has had that BL-22 since he was nine, and it has been the demise of a lot of coons, squirrels, prairie dogs, gophers, etc.
Mud bogger, I will keep that in mind! Here's my other 1895. Although you can't see it, it is resting on top of the seat post. This one is a 30-03. Not as accurate as the 30US. I get five shot groups between 2" and 3". I like the shotgun butt though-kinder to the shoulder!
Joe - very nice wood on that Savage. Everytime I look at a stock that pretty I 'think' what the wife would say..."Honey, why can't we have a dinner table that nice?" She gets mad when I remind her she also likes fancy table cloths so by hiding the table - what's the point! Fancy wood belongs on a rifle not a table. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Move over FIDO...Homesteader.
White Muzzleloading Systems .50 caliber in a Bell and Carlson stock with a Leupold VX-II 2x7. Shoots 460 grain bullets with no sabots, deer don't move usually!
Great pic. I always try to get a few sunrise/set pics on all my out of state hunts. Something about them holds the less stressful part of the adventure. You got a good one.
Man, the best thing about this thread are the gorgeous pictures. I am in envy and awe and some of the beautiful places you folks live in. Me, I'm stuck here in Fugly-Florida
This thread can easily be one of the best we had. Lots of great pics with awesome landscape shots and great-looking rifles as well. Lets keep this rolling into hunting season...
Some french sort of fence picket pictures without pickets;...You all known the first two, the last one is a Merkel KR1 Tracker model in 9,3x62 with 47cm barrel. Dom
kinda embarassed to say so, but not yet. the scope for the M7 is at Leupold getting fixed, but the big prob is another project that's been eating up most of my time (changing a '72 3/4 ton Suburban from 2wd automatic to 4x4 four speed). gotta shoot some though because i put in for an unlimited sheep tag and have exactly one month to get the cobwebs out...
That stock on the .264 is even more sexier than the "Wannabee". If that's even possible....
Travis
that stock came from the Specials page on the McMillan site, and when i called to order it, Heather went back to see if it was still there. when she came back to the phone, she called it 'hidious' and offered to have it painted for free. i thought that was funny...

I had one of those bastids. SHot at a mule deer buck in Co at about 125 yards , one of the most dramatic kills I have ever seen. Just picked it up and slammed it to the ground.

i want to see pics of this! new thread maybe?
when i get a little farther along, i'll put up pics in the huntin' rigs section here. i been saving up some stuff for this for a while: 14 bolt GM rear end with 13"x3.5" brakes, Dana 60 front, 52" front springs and 64" rear springs for ride quality and suspension travel, 427 truck engine, NP 205, SM 465, Hydroboost brake system, ect...
Toad-what do you use for tape to get your load data to stick on the stock?
Also, do you shoot lefty or righty? I mainly shoot righty so I put the load data on the side of the stock facing me, I notice you've got it on the other side?
No Pastor, its only a real european wild boar of less than one year (38 chromosome). It's why is red haired; we call them "bte rousse" litteraly "redish beast". When they grow older they begin to change color to black or black and grey. Was shot from above during a driven hunt in south of France. The 444 was a bit too much effective. Bullet was 265grs Hawk handloaded.
As some of you find this animal strange i will show you other post, not fence but post any way...Sorry to hijack the thread hope you like the pictures of my posts. regards to all Lithuanian post

Marseille, I've never seen a hog with that much hair!(the first pic) What was the weight? Is your 99 a .300?
The Hog weight around 180kg, about 400 pounds. The hair are up because mortally wounded was trying to fight the Laka dog with deathly determination. Had to finish it with a neck shot. The 99 is 250-3000. Here some more pictures if you like them. Two were scanned from my "camera old papers" first is a Browning the other a very old Standard 1912.
This is SLB 2000 light in Lithuania after a small shower, picket is a bit wide but hold the rifle well
Dig it John, good stuff... Definately looks like Klamath and Lake Counties?
By Bonanza....
hope all is well with you Mike... keep you head down over there...give our regards to the rest of the boys over there with their fannies on the line..and all of you come home safe and unharmed...
here's a pic of my bubba'd turkish mauser, it's taken 2 elk so far, sorry, I don't have a fencepost picture
this is the end result, there is 5 elk in the back of the truck mine was the only one that got quartered up(darn thing ran below the trail after being shot)
Even us Canucks like single actions. Mine is in 22 mag only. We don't have the right to carry, but we also don't live in snake country where I live. For years I had a carry permit for prospecting purposes and that single six went everywhere with me in the bush. There is not much finish on it now and I almost crapped at the price of ammo now.
Stump pic. 1952 Rem 722 300 Sav w/Redfield peep. Its a pleasure to carry and a dandy shooter... Crazy thing extracts and ejects, has a crisp light trigger, doesn't fire when closing the bolt (which is complete with handle), groups tight, but I just can't hit the dime! OT
Weather forcast: dry & 76f! Couldn't get worse for blacktail hunting.
.338-06 700 Action Fluted Douglas #4 barrel B&C Stock Leupy 2.5-8x36 Talley LW's Mountain Sling Not a light weight at 8.5lbs as shown. If I did it over I'd go a #3 with no flutes. I'm thinking about having the bolt fluted and the handle skeletonized by Karl.
With any luck, I'll fling a 200 Accubond from it at an elk this next weekend.
I finally got my K98 back BTW. I had to go through two gunsmiths and one of them was a hack but the second was a good guy and I now have my rifle back. It's ugly as sin right now but I'm getting a new walnut stock for it in a couple weeks so it'll look better then.
Sorry about the black tape, I couldn't find a roll of blue...
Yep... And it's going to go on being an 8x57. I decided to leave it 8mm for awhile at least because it'll be a great deer, elk, bear, etc gun. I'm figuring on plunking a mulie with it.
I think I'll just start saving my pennies now to buy a Sako or a Kimber in 22-250 or maybe a Remington in 223. If I got a 223, it would be made an AI probably...

Ben...I killed my first Kudu with an 8x57....and some other stuff after that. If you are gonna shoot elk, the Hornady 195 oughta be skookum...
My son a couple years ago while we're out chasing spring yogi. We were back behind a locked gate. Notice the benchmark to the right of the corner. He's packing my 260 Rem on a tang safety mdl 77 with a #5 shilen in a 77R McMillan. The rifle to his left our right is most likely my mdl Seven SS in 7 Shamwow. He's wearing a pair of 8x40 Nikon Monarch ATB's.
Can't let the thread die... The Mauser on a cedar snag this morning on a mule deer hunt. Saw two good bucks, but they were on the wrong side of the fence. One of them had a cool little kicker off the back of his G-2.
Not a fence post but a young jack-pine in Northwestern Alberta. Kimber 84M Classic in 338 Federal & 2.5-8X Leupy...6lbs 10 ounces of carrying enjoyment.
Heck no! Far from it! That's the same one. Talk about durability, I dropped it on concrete and it didn't even change the POI! The BC scope caps didn't fare well though...
600 triple deuce on what could've been a fence post...
I used to have the same rifle with a Leupold 3X9 in Weaver rings. Just about identical to yours. Also had a Sako triple duece that I sold to a buddy last year. I always enjoyed those 222's.
Don, I liked the looks of the paint job, but I wanted the scope to match the walnut and bluing of the rest of the rifle....... so I scratched it off with my pocketknife. What do you think of it???
South side of Fort Peck, about 40 miles west of Hell Creek. Ruger No. 1B, 270 Roy with the purty wood swapped out for the laminate. Heavy freakin' rifle! It shoots though...

Naw, that's my brother's and mine dugout... We have a big washout in our field from the flooding this spring, so we notched a dugout into it a few weeks ago... It's pretty cool, we have a fireplace and everything in it!
I love flock shooting elk in the flats. Or did you blow his horns clear across the meadow?....
Not flat, not a meadow... that's an almost 45* slope adjacent a creek and timber... pic doesn't really do the steepness any justice. We got the guy above his first elk, a 5x6 bull. My partner and I each downed a cow.
My bestest friend (and wife) had a b-day today so we went elk hunting that turned into tree hunting and then elk hunting. We tagged out on the tree and I passed on the elky (dark timber 23 yds one heck of a hunt).
Not quite fence posts but it'll do...grin
Dober
(and yeah this thread needs to be a sticky, glad I wasn't the 1st one to say it...grin)
Looks like a classic example of overpenetration and bullet failure on that tree. Not to mention a low hit in the ankle. What caliber were you using and what's the load?
"The Gate to Heaven"...or Hell depending on how things work out! I came across this gate in the middle of nowhere. About 50 miles +/- west of Hell Creek. Just seemed so out of place...
Aside from the wind this place ain't too bad. Lots of pronghorn and big mulies. The coyotes are smart and catch your wind waayyy out of range though. I wish there was more bird hunting too but oh well.
I can't wait for Flaming Gorge to freeze over for the big lakers and ling! Apparently 40+ pounders are caught every year through the ice.
Plus the local TV station plays scooby-doo cartoons! I have been watching it every weekday and am not afraid to admit it!
Used a fence post in my pasture, not as cool as some of the other ones but at least its mine! This is my Ruger 77 Tang Safety in 358 Win. By the numbers made in 1975, no warning on the barrel either. I got it a year ago and just now got to sight it in. Puts them in the same hole if I hold her tight enough! Topped with a Weaver K4 wide field. Can't see changing a thing! [img][/img]
Thanks, I put some picture on 24HC the other day and tried to show my 358 Win. and couldn't remember how I did. That's why I like this forum, for the most part people here are so nice! Every now and again, someone will be less than appropriate and I just over look it. Life's to short to banter words with an idiot! Thank you for fixing it for me. Taking my lil friend to shoot some pigs with my Dad this weekend and want to use my 35 caliber.
It's not a fencepost but then there weren't any where I was.
This is my CZ 550 with a bear that kind of walked into camp a couple of years ago and became sausage and jerky. Not really what I was after but when they start coming in to camp you have to sever the dependence.
Eh, I hunt all over AK and other places, wherever notions and game take me. I have wood stocked rifles, synthetic, laminates, etc. I take care of them as best I can and never had a problem. If I hunted exclusively where we get 300+ inches of rain/snow a year, maybe I'd just go plastic. Maybe not, but there's a lot to be said for the right prep and understanding what you want to do.
However, even though it doesn't look like it, we got over 30" of rain during the hunt those pics of the Mauser were taken and even though rust-blued and wood stocked, it suffered no ill effects. I cannot say the same, ended up with knee surgery (again). That was in Sept of this year. The use some rifles get by folks that live and constantly use rifles in snow, sleet, rain, and salt, it just makes sense to go with stainless and synthetic, if only to not drive you crazy every evening.
Go to Lowe's, buy one fencepost, put it up in your yard (you could even tack some rusty barbwire on it) and presto - you got one for when you need one!
It seems that the old school thinking is to reel with the right hand if you are right handed. I never understood that philosophy, as I reel left handed as well. Why would anyone want to switch hands just to reel???
I reel left handed with a spinning rod as well, so it just feels like the natural way to go.
I certainly don't need to be muscling a reel when I'm dealing with foot-long trout, so the reel is pretty much an afterthought, and just some place to wind up the line at the end of the day. I need rod control in my right hand a whole lot more than I need to be reeling.
Somebody else may tell me that I'm wrong, but this old hack is alone 99% of the time that I'm out on the stream, so I guess they won't be there to correct me anyway!
The rifle is an 1893 or Model 93 Marlin - depending on how you do the math. It weighs 7 lbs 1/4 oz. and has a 26" round barrel.
It was (or maybe still is)a .32 Winchester Special. It is in Oregon where is is undergoing plastic surgery to become a .38-55. I'm hoping it will be home soon so I can fit it with a tang sight and get it read for NRA lever action silhouette and antelope hunting this fall.
Bought one Marlin 1893 in Canada some years ago, was 26in barrel take down model, writen Marlin Safety on the receiver and caliber was 30-30. Too bad i sold it to a Marlin collector...
Here two pictures, no fence but some kind of post...

I'd love to hear about your banteng hunt. PM if necessary...
Mark; I trust that this finds you and yours doing well.
While I did post a photo of this particular "money pit" project 98 in .270 somewhere earlier in this fine thread, hopefully it's OK that I add another after the most recent additions complete with a paint job.
I'm not certain I really like the OD base coat and may go back to flat brown again - but like as not I'll give it a season or two to rub some of the Krylon Fusion off first.
Thanks to all the members of our 'Fire who've participated in this fine thread. I often come back to see who has put up photos and enjoy them all.

Nice Mauser Dwayne! What scope is that? Leupold 4x?
mtcurman; That is a fine photo Ben, I really like the way you laid it out and found such a unique stump to center the setup. Well done!
I am a wee bit concerned that we've been a bit of a negative influence on you though, as it appears that there's something blue on the muzzle end of your 600/Mohawk Remington there.

Dwayne
Alas, I am afraid you are right Dwayne. Blue tape is on most of the guns in the house, except for my Mauser, which in addition to blue, also has yellow, white, green and black electrical tape! And also my .22, which has red instead of blue...
My brother is slowly going nuts because when we're on hikes or out hunting I am CONSTANTLY saying "Ooooh, that would be a good place for a fencepost picture!"
Sorry 'bout the hijack, here's another fence post pic.... It's sort of the reverse of the last one because instead of being nice and sunny and warm, it's blowing sleet and snow.
Ok Karnis whats the story on the bottom rifler? Cartridge and so on.
Ok. Here's the story. I was on the computer and looking in the classifieds and said "Hmmmmm, lookee there...." and I bought it.
Actually I bought it from Cliff444 (IIRC) a few years back. Originally it was a Ti in 7mm-08. Shot 140 gr boolits like they had eyes and since the wife wanted to hunt (it turned into her rifle before I could blink) I switched to 120's. It was ho-hum and being a bit crazed, bought a standard contour 24" SS Remington take off (classifieds-where else) had it installed and cut to 23".
Some way or another the Ti stock was moved to another SA Remmy and I bought a Ti BDL stock from Stocky's using a floorplate I had stuffed in the back on my goodee box. It now shoots the 120's and 110 TTSX's beautifully.
Unfortunately the rifle is still not mine. The wife repossessed and re-titled it. I'm sure it will be the last one to go.
Hey Jim the Plumber, seeing that rifle again makes me wonder about the permits to use one. Were they hard to get or expensive, and how long are they good for?
I don't know if it would be legal to use one when hunting here in Iowa, but the idea intrigues me for some reason. I imagine on on the end of my low wall or something like that
Anyone can shoot an elk and set up his rifle next to the downed animal. It takes real talent to get an elk to trip on a log and break it's neck right in front of your rifle.
All we have is t-posts. Here's the best I could do yesterday evening on the lease. We have a 2-week doe/spike season ending next weekend. Didn't see anything though....except for the sunset last night looking out of the blind! Wow! Notice the lit-up drilling rig...there's actually 3 on the adjoining property - and you can see the windmills in the distance just to the right of the drilling rig. Here are the pics:
Brent, that is a good one for sure! In the spirit of shotguns, I finally was able to go bird hunting (on 1/2/12) with the 16 gauge Browning my wife gave me for Valentine Day last year - it is a pleasure to carry afield.
So far I'm pleased, only shot skeet with it as of yet, never found a covey (it was all briars and broomstraw), but going back for more soon. Maybe I'll have some birds in my next picture!
You can now sell all your auto-loaders, your pumps, and every other shotgun you have. The twin tubes produce a point of no return thing that makes all other shotguns uninteresting. However, you might have to experiment with side-bys someday.
Brent I love that Golden! We have a male. 7 months young. His name is Sawyer. He is really just a family pet/companion but great dogs! Care to share the name of yours and age?
That is Molly, an English Setter that belongs to my hunting pardner. I am a longtime user of double barrels, here is a 12 gauge Winchester I have owned a long time, it is 20 years older than me! However, I will keep all my other shotguns (semi's, pumps, SxS, and single shots) just love shotguns to much to limit myself to only one type.
He is Gaylan's Give Me Liberty, better known as Gus. He was born on the 4th of July 2009, so about 2.5 yrs old right now. That bird is really all his. He told me he was going to flush it and he then he did. Rignt at our feet. I let it go a bit to avoid "overpenetration" if you know what I mean and then barely touched it with the first shot, missed with the second. We marked it several hundred yards out and Gus was on him in a heart beat. The grass was 7-8 ft tall and hard to see in and the bird ran across my left boot with Gus in pursuit. We tracked it another 100 yds and then Gus dove into a pile of grass and it was over. I reached in to grab it, got spurred but held on so Gus could back off enough to let the grass out of his mouth that made it impossible to back out with it. Live and kickin' but we bagged him.

Whoa! That is the nicest shotgun I've seen a long time. I dn't know much about Winnies though.
My oldest shotguns are from the 70s and 80s. The 1870s and 80s. I love sidebys but I have two pumps of family significance that I will always keep. The 97 Winchester gets hunted for turkeys now and again.
Sako 75 LH in .25-06 with reflex moderator and Schmidt and Bender 4-16x50. Very heavy setup at the moment, going to slim it all down over the next while, rebarrel and ditch the moderator. Only use it because the muzzle blast of the 22.5" barrel is thoroughly antisocial.
The 17's foul after a few shots, anyways.. So I've read.
I heard that same thing, but I bought one anyhow. All the while I had it, I never had those issues. The only issue I had with it was that IMR4320 was the best powder for it and I had to tap every powder load through a tiny funnel to reload. I sold it and had a 220 Swift made and never looked back...
Weighs 5 lbs 14.2 oz without sling. A Brownells Latigo will complement it nicely.
I bought it used and recently finished a bed job and rattle can paint job. I'm happy with how the paint turned out. Range time will tell the tale on the bed job.
Ironic, that huge stump was probably cut down to make gun stocks and there sits the latest greatest plastic.
Now this is Ironic! That is a big red oak stump in my backyard, and the tree was cut after it fell on my house in a windstorm. The whole house shook, and I thought a tornado had hit.
This is the first new rifle I ever bought. Got it in 1985 or 1986 when I was still in high school. Tang safety Ruger in .30-06. I decided on .30-06 because in my financial state at that time I thought I would only be able to own one rifle and wanted to be able to use it for anything I would ever get to hunt in the U.S. Still the only rifle I need, and try to use it at least once a year just so it doesn't get lonely in the safe. I have since put a sims recoil pad on it and floated the barrel.
This is my latest rifle, a Winchester Mod 70 Extreme Weather in .300 WSM. Topped with Leupold 4.5-14x50 Long Range model with Boone and Crockett reticle. Shooting handloaded Hornady 180 SST's pretty well.
Nothing to brag about only some pictures of different posts that are not fence...all about hunting. Season is going to close but pictures are there to remind good times.
A Sako 85 posted on rock.
A wild boar "post" and a T3 338Fed
Not really a post but a bag and a semi-auto Merkel SR1 9,3x62
A Cesar Guerini special slug gun and a "roe post"
A Mauser M03 tracker 9,3x62 in foggy forest on dead wood post.
Yes Sir...The High Desert can only be described as "big country" Since I'm shuffeling around and organizing pics, here is a good one I lost for a while and just found.
The town's a meth infested dive, but the area is awesome. The ice fishing for lakers and ling on Flaming Gorge is absolutely world class. This BLM office is also really laid back and easy to work with.

The Zebra's fantastic and my wife is even mo betta! IME it's a whole lot easier to have your wife as a hunting partner than most men.
She's got the best eyes going, and I mean for me to look at and her game eyes are 2nd to none. The only other game eyes I've ever been around that are as good as hers were with the natives I guided with down in Sonora!
And she's a stone cold killer, and at long range as well. First time I had her out with the Mashburn she was using powdering basketball size rocks @ 700 with ease...grin

Dober
She's a natural born murderer! Awesome! My better half is one heck of a gal as well, but unfortunately she is a bit freaked out by all the blood and guts. She likes staying home and looking pretty a lot more, which is okay too. One of these days I'll get her on a 'yote or some dogs
I picked this one up (.243) for my daughter back in the 80's sometime.
WTF?
Is it the picture or is that barrel a bit short?
Travis
It's a Ruger M77 Ultra Light(NOT so light!)Carbine. 18 1/2"bbl w/open sights. My grandaughter took her first Whitetail with it this yr at just over 240yds.
When you stuff two full trophy bull caribou worth of de-boned meat into your pack, and haul it 5 miles over the lumpy, mushy, rocky tundra, THEN you'll have earned the right to call me a Nancy
Until then......you can carry my elk for me. *grin*
Dude I did that last week... Until YOU carry out 4 mature bull gophers out over 8 miles of quicksand without a pack, you have to carry out my elk, and me out too!
Well as usual, I'm late to the party. Reason is I recently learned how to post pics from pb.
Secondly, where I live I can't take pics outside w/o going out of town, TOO MANY HUNGRY EYES, IYKWIM This wood flooring is as close as I can get to any fence post.
This first one is MY BABY and I BABY my baby, altho it's killed it's fair share of varmits & deer.
SHE is my Rem M 6--6MM Rem. I got her brand new AFTER the M6s were discontinued. One of the unusual bucks I've killed was kilt with this gun. He was an 8 pt with 5 acorn tips. No pics of deer but I can photo the rack.
I can't get good lighting on my Win 70 in 6.5 Swede BUT I WILL asap.
Sorry for being late but I've enjoyed this thread Dober.
That rifle looks TOO GOOD to ding up hunting. I like, I like.
Thanks, Jwall. I bought 3 rifles in the past two weeks and may have to start thinning the herd. This one is under consideration, although it's mint, has great fiddleback and was accurized at Hill Country Rifles (target showing .4" spread with 130 gr. TSX).
Jwall - I sold the bipod recently so it's trimmed up. I don't have a postal scale but it's lighter than my pre-64 30/06 and has a 23" bbl. I'd say the gun is close to 8, less the scope (Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 #4 reticle). It's has good balance.
Thanks, Jwall. I just ordered a scale as I'm curious as well. I do like the fiddleback. This one is tight and consistent all the way through the forearm.
Poobah, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but most folks use a rest that assists in keeping the rifle upright, not horizontal. That sorta looks like a Mongangsta rest. Nice rifle though. Bet it can reach the cloud shadows...
Keep searchin' for that fencepost. I saw one up near Great Falls a few years back, and another just south of Polson.
Now don't y'all buy this gun before I can sell it to wife.
Now DADGUMMIT, DOUBLE DANG IT, HORSEFEATHERS, xxxx xxxx !!!!
Somebody WENT N BOUGHT IT. I had a project in mind.
Oh well, I need to save money for remodeling anyway. SHOOT!!
Someone actually bought that gun???
Yeah Ingwe, nice looking 'coyote gun' isn't it?
Since I'm stocked up on coyote guns, I was thinking about screwing a 375 "ouch n ouch" tube on it. I needed it to keep the elephants out of my dandelions
Congratulations man. That SURE looks like a great rifle.
Seriously, I had passed on it AND THEN was having second thots, when I didn't have any business thinking twice.
Yes I was thinking about 375n her and AGAIN I see no need for a 375 in my future. Altho I do have elephants in my dreams.
I was at work earlier and didn't think much about your post. On the way home (obviously day dreaming), I said to myself, "self" wonder if Shrap bought that gun.
Dober: you done good when you started this thread!
Thx and yeah it's been a fun one but I can't really take credit for it. My good friend Brad was the one that was the originator of the fence post pic. I still think those pics he took oh his Montana's with the Crazies in the back ground should of been something that Kimber used in their adds...
Perhaps someday the powers that be will make it a "sticky" as there's so many good pics in it.
Yeah, had to settle for him this morning, rather than the boone&crockett prairie dog I wanted. It seems I have the local p-dog population kinda gunshy. Couldn't get within .22 range......grin...
Wow Don, thats getting up there with Texas Jackalopes. Im intrigued by your T/C as I'm presently 22less. Ive never seen one before. It looks like a shooter!
My sis is only a 1/4 mile from the inferno and keeps asking me to pray. Last word, the winds were driving it northward away from them. They're still eating smoke.
It's freaking heart breaking to see those pictures of people's homes just torched down. I can't imagine losing everything! Hope she is doing okay, we just need some damn rain.
I don't know if it'll ever stop blowing around here. Every single day at about 11:00 AM the winds just start whipping.
I'd love a Mickey for that rig, but there ain't a way in hell you could pry those 'noclars outta' my dirty paws! You can try me, I'm a big enough boy...
This old Stevens Westfield #948 20 gauge used to be a "barn" gun. When it is not posing for pictures it hangs above the door inside the cabin. My son calls it "the meet and greet gun".
My grandpa had one of THOSE. I shot it and killed snakes with it. At the time I was a young teen and DID NOT know what it was.
I have NO idea which relative wound up with it.
I'm now on a scavenger hunt.
THANKS Jerry
edit to ADD:
Allow me a little leeway on the dates. It was about between '60-'65. Being born in '49, I was between 11 &16 or so. It was not illegal to shoot snakes in those days (even from BRIDGES).
All I knew, it was Grandpa's 22. and it was an older gun, wear, dings, etc. so pre 64 IS correct.
Well Shrapnel -- How about an UPDATE ? What have you done with MY rifle? I still REGRET..... Glad You got it. Jerry
I got it for a friend of mine. Talked to him just yesterday, said it was a one holer. I also got a Swarovski 2.2-9 scope for him, he will be putting that on the rifle and putting the Zeiss on another gun he has...
Well, well, I finally WILL have some fence posts. Actually there are fence posts in the pic.
My 'Great Grandfather' and bros and community 'helper's' built this barn in 1900.
Originally, it had a lower loft, hallway, and 4 small feed/milk rooms. I kept the doors. @ 2000 I tore off, with the help of 1 friend, the lower part of the barn.....AGE, sun,& wind had been eating on it for 100 yrs. That tin has been on the barn since the 50s,***as far as I know***, that was put on it in 1900. Can't prove it, but none of my aunts or uncles remembers the tin being replaced.
However this appearance is how it was originally built and then the lower part was added in the 30s.
Yukonal, I really like your 700ADL, I would like to know the details? Dont see any ADL's with Nightforce scopes? What does that rig weight? Caliber...
It's a Gordy Gritter's Custom .308. Lilja custom contour (between a #3 and #4) at 22", and with the NF, sling, and loaded, it's 9#.
One of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned, and is so easy, because it hammers with every bullet, and every powder I've put thru it. Just a great rifle. Thanks for asking...
The "Welcome Wagon" got a new barrel. Factory Rem 18 1/2" mod choked with night sights. Shoots buck very nicely, and holy mackerel it loves green box slugs.
Have to be pretty quick in my 'hood to get outdoor rifle pics, the oak chair will have to suffice. The paint's still fresh and I have plenty of room for improvement, but the load is a keeper. This 243 Mtn Guide, with 24hourcampfire roots, is pretty consistent with the 70 gr NBT! A bit mild at 3300 fps, mostly in the 3s and 4s but the latest is this .12" trifecta... Had to reconsider the need for high power scopes for load development, the 3-9 does plenty fine. From the free classifieds, Bushy 4200 3-9x40, Remy Mtn Guides, paint your own, .243 70 NBT, premium brass, and bedding without binding - ala 24hourcampfire. Thanks.
This is a photo of one of my 348 win rifles. It is a little different from most 348's in that it is a Frantz Sodia made in Austria. It is proof to me that Winchester wasn't the only factory to make 348's. I have carried this rifle many times and never seen a deer while I had it. I hope to change my luck this year.
Here is a rifle my son built for himself after he built my 338 Federal. While my little 338 Fed is happy in the woods, this one just screams for more open spaces than you see in the background of the picture. Having spent 30+ years in the phone business, if I want to reach out and touch something, the rifle sitting on the post will do it. It is a 338 Lapua.
My Kimber .308 is the Mountain Rifle I always wanted. I kind of think of it as a blue collar custom. Meaning, if money wasn't an issue and I were to build a custom, it would have many if not all of the features that this Kimber possesses. If the wood was any nicer I wouldn't want to hunt with it. Accuracy is excellent with many different bullets between 130-165 gr. All the rifle I need at a price I could afford.
O.K. I think I might have the photo bucket thing under control. Here are some pseudo fence post pictures:
Left Hand Rem 581 .22LR. Fun to shoot. Shoots "minute of squirrel" all day long with Eley Subsonics. Gemtech Outback II takes care of the noise control.
LH Faux Model 7. Rem 700 LH SA, factory Model 7 take off barrel in .243. McM Model 7 stock. Rattle can camo. Before I started going to Colorado, this was my "kill everything I need to kill rifle" for KY.
Savage 110 with 24" Douglas barrel chambered for .30-06. Just got this put together. McWoody stock thanks to NSAQAM. Still need to work up a load for this.
LH Sako .375H&H, DOuglas barrel, HS Precision stock, Leupold 4x12x40 VXR on top. My first truly "custom rifle". Holds MOA out to 500 yards with 235gr TSX's.
And just to show that I am not a total South Paw Snob, a 1954 Standard Model 70 in .30-06 with Lyman 48 receiver sight. Still need to take this one out and play.
The .22, .243, and .375 are all on the "keep" list. Still need some time with the two .30-06's to see which one sticks. Just started carrying a camera in the field. I promise in the future to take more "fence post" pictures out in the field....
Early Kimber Classic in 7mm08. Karnis worked his magic on the stock and it actually looks better than the photo shows. No accuracy problems with this one.
Antonio Zoli in 300 win. mag. This also is a very early one.
Played musical stocks on the ruger UL's. Here's the new walnut on the 204 that I got from K22. On a post, and in the killing field on shooting shticks.
Ruger M77 tang safety in .270 wcf. Canjar trigger, 22 LPI checkering, Leupold Vari X III 1.75-6. The stock came from a rifle once owned by Jack O'Connor. It was a 7x57 and given to him by Bill Ruger when he was at the factory. O'Connor was going to have the stock reshaped by Biesen. Somehow it was broken before that happened. O'Connor replaced it with another stock and Jay Frazier wound up with the broken one. Jay repaired it and sold it. I got it from a fellow in Colorado about 22 years ago. I have had several nice customs over the years but this rifle is my favorite.
Dunno what Karnis did, but that Kimber looks good!
I don't know exactly either, but he did mention using some kind of stick with a star on the end of it. Magic something or another.

Hey, I didn't know you were allowed to do that huntsman22. Does that ol' thing still shoot?

Not quite the fence post I would prefer, but it'll do. Ruger 77 MKII 25-06 my newest gun my wife don't know about! The wood inserts grew on me and now I have two guns wearing these stocks with the wood inserts. Im all out of them now, but with two stocks that will need them in the future it looks like a good summer project with some wood working tools.
How about rail fence photos? Here's my 1894 Marlin .44-40 WCF that a friend built from pieces. He made the stocks from scratch and did the case coloring himself. The 26-inch octagon barrel started life on a 1893 Marlin as a .32-20. He bored it out, cut rifled it and rechambered it to .44-40.

My wife and I closed out our early California deer season Sunday. I took a fence post pic on Friday. This rifle is a veteran hunter. It started life as a standard weight 30-06 with the low comb stock. I put the Monte Carlo stock and the FW barrel on it several years ago.
The old cowboys called the higher hill in the background "forkhorn hill" because they said you could always get a forkhorn there.
As it happened we sat near the bottom of "forkhorn hill" Saturday evening and this little buck wandered around the point. I already killed one forkhorn this season and I was looking for something bigger but I didn't want to burn a tag.
Scotts94, I think you picked the perfect synthetic stock for that gun. I recently got an African in 9.3x62. I glass bedded the receiver and free-floated the barrel in the factory walnut stock. I mounted Leu VX-3 1.5x5 w/German #4 reticule. I love that gun.
This is a 1927 production Remington m25 carbine in 25-20 that is 34.5" long, has a 17.7" barrel, 13" length of pull, and weighs a whopping 4lbs 9 oz. It is also a take down model.
I updated the sights, and have been shooting and reloading for it quite a bit this summer. Fun little gun.
Italian Handi (better known as Beretta FS-1 or Beretta Companion). Snagged it last week. .410 cal, full choke, 26" barrel, 4lb-2oz, made in 1961. Wish it was the 28ga I have been looking for. It is still going grouse and squirrel hunting this weekend though.

...a plain ordinary pic and rifle--Ruger Hawkeye 22-250, straight 6x Burris in Warne mounts, Hogue stock, and an earlier Montana sling. just a "working/workhorse rifle"...
with good handloads, it will do 2 inches at 225 yards--is a fast rig to get into action out to 300 for some hunting, (and when conditions are good on the range, will hit 2 1/2 minute targets out to 600), though for field use i consider it a 300-375 yard rig max.
no Crazies in the background in this pic, but here you go Mark...
A fence post nearby, my two oldest son's, now half way through or nearly graduating college, on a ranch we used to play when I lived in Midland. Note the "chopped and channeled" 10-22. A stock I still own and available for free (when I get home in December) to someone that can use it. The second photo was a very memorable head shot at 40 yards or so. Little guy went nuts when it started flipping.
And the two of them with thier younger brother Tony this past June.
.303 Savage in it's favorite habitat (the woods), resting peacefully on the rail of my ground blind, patiently waiting for a victim to amble by. Unfortunately, we came home empty handed this trip...
in fact i've really enjoyed so many of the photos--the concept of "fence post pics" was so good i finally decided to add a photo to it myself--though the pic was only a "staged, so-so" shot.
sometime this winter we need to grab shrapnel and go shoot some yip dogs, or some rabbits.
have you seen--or talked to bill b. lately? was wondering what he's been up to...
keep that swift and .22-250 bringing home the goods!
That's a good question. I spent some time trying to figure it out myself when I first encountered it. I'm not 100% certain, but I think it is what is called a Hercules Club Tree (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis). Also known as Prickly Ash, Tooth Ache Tree, Tingle Tree. Not all Hercules Clubs' bark are as densely knobbed as this one.

Damn. That's cool. I hope I run into one some day. I'll at least know what it is.
I just got back from Colorado last night. I had to take a pic of "the Weatherby" and the antlers from my first bull, killed Thursday. The Weatherby is a 300 and wears a Zeiss Diavari 3-9x36 and has a Canjar trigger. I haven't decided which pic I like better so will post them both.
How bout my sons first deer he shot all by himself? Savage Lightweight Hunter in 7-08. Practice with a .22 pays off. He even shot the bolt and reloaded without thinking about it before he looked over the rife for the deer. He's hooked deep now! Patrick
How about a fence wire picture? That is a Prairie Dog launched from the red spot in the background onto the barbed wire from 250 yards with a 222 Remington Magnum in a Sako Deluxe Pre-Garcia rifle...
Took my dad's 1954 Marlin 336RC out on Saturday to see if I'd have any luck. Passed on a small doe, didn't have a shot at anything else. Still a good day to get it out, brought back lots of memories of hunting with dad.

Beautiful! Love those old Savages still out hunting, as they were meant to. Thanks much!
Weatherby Mark V Stainless Carbine,7mm-08,in a McMillan Sako Classic, S&K mounts, Zeiss Victory Diavari 2.5-10x42.
Beautiful, I was in the woods with mine today except it wears a B&C Stock, weatherby tan with black webbing, talleys and a 2x7 Leupold. Also have one in 308 setup the same way.
Newest addition, fireformed brass today......25-06 AI
Trued Rem 700, Rifle Basix trigger, Rock #1 at 24in bought here from Kaleb, Mickey MR stick painted by me (don't really dig the pad but thats how it came from another 'Fire member), bolt work by Karl ( think I may web the bolt handle myself) screwed together by Redneck.
Slapped a set of Leupy rings on it and lapped them in. Had the Burris Siq Select lying around...eventually I'm going to put a set of Talley lows with a Leupold that is getting a M1 knob installed.
I put a flip-flop recoil pad on my Mauser today and also stenciled a yote track on each side of the stock.. I got out and snapped a sodden fence post pic of it...(sorry 'bout the blurred pic!)
Here are a couple of pixs I tried to get on a couple of pages ago. Weatherby SS Carbine with B&C Stock in 7mm-08. It was snowing light most of the day as I still hunted. Great day to be in the woods, just no deer to show for it.
Not quite. Whoever did the work, didn't shorten the mag box and follower, and the left side feeders, don't.......
Just happen to have a mag box spacer and follower for a (7) or SA 700 if you can make it work. They're also available from Brownells. Not sure about Rugers.
Thank for the offer, Dmc. It really ain't so bad if I remember to stoke it with the tips touching the front of the box. There is plenty of meat, behind the ears, to allow shortening later on.
This'un is a candidate for DBC, too. Here's a pic of the copper, after about 30 rounds. Dang hard to get a macro shot of a 17 bore.grin
She do shoot, out to 500 anyway, so I dang sure have no complaints. Thanks, 'slave

Here's a snap of a .221 FB follower and Spacer for a Model 7 from Brownells. I thought I had a lock on a 700 221 barrel on ebay but you know how sneaky those last second bidders can be. Ended up with a 17 Rem barrel so no need for the 221 partzzzzz. Lemme know if you decide you wanna try em.
Buddy of mine has one like that. He shoots nothing but cast bullets and does quite well on his Wisconsin whitetails. As he says..." I've never polluted the barrel of any rifle with a jacketed bullet " , or something along those lines. What are you shooting through yours, Steelhead?
All was forgiven when you dispatched and saved us all from that that KILLER PD!!! Now if we could just do something about that thrill running up and down yours and Chris Mathews leg
On the left a very experienced Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless FWT 30-06 1997 vintage and a new to me as of yesterday (courtesy forum member Swampman 700) Winchester Model 70 Stainless Super Shadow 7mm-08 2007 vintage residing in a B&C stock.
I thought I was through buying rifles until an old buddy called last month and asked if I wanted to reacquire a rifle I sold him several years ago - of course I did! Just picked it up today, saw this old stump on the side of US401 south of Raeford NC and stopped and took a few pictures with my cellphone camera. Model 70 Featherweight built in 1953, chambered in the .308 WIN.
VonGuff, your 30+ rabbits surely trumps my 2, but I won a few hands of poker too last weekend
I have no idea what an "XR100 in 20 VarTarg" translates too, but it looks like is is some sort of suppressed rifle. Is it subsonic? I'd be interested to hear more about it.
Von Gruff, nice looking country to be out and about in.
I have a botanical question.
In the first pic posted with the 8 rabbits there is a long, light green plant with alternate arranged leaves and a flower spike at about 8 or 9 o'clock from your rifle. It resembles the Mullein that occurs here in the U.S. Can you identify it?
Brent I dont play poker so I guess you win that one. My XR 100 is the Rem single shot that I bought in 204 so I could re-chamber to the 20 VarTarg which is the 221 FireBall necked to 20 cal. I run an under 200yd load of the 34gn Nosler Shots bulk box bullet at 2700fps over 9gn Blue Dot and a longer range 35gn Berger at 3700fps with 19.2gn H4198. The Shots is zeroed at 100yds which gives the Berger a 235yd zero of the same scope setting and allows shooting from up close to way out there with just a change of ammo on the hill if need be. The berger has had a good day on the goats as well. The supressor really dimishes the sound signiture and while the supersonic crack is still evident the direction is confusing for the animal and the reduced sound allows multiple shots that would otherwise be limited to just the one.
The plant we commonly call a tobacco plant is the Mullein (verrified by my wife who knows about these things.
Thanks, I won the match too. That isn't saying much because there were only three of us and the other two shooters have only been shooting silhouette for a year or two. They are still learning too.
Even so I have never shot BP before the Wednesday before the match. And I only fired twenty rounds Wednesday. The rifle is a 40-65 and I used a RCBS 40-400-CSA mold I happened to get with a bunch of other molds and some Swiss powder I picked up with some other stuff. I loaded the case with no compression and no wads and the RCBS bullet cast from wheel weights. The rifle shot that load well. I am impressed with how well it did with the first load I tried. It is a good rifle!
This is my first post here at the Campfire and I hope to share many more in the future. This thread is awesome and I have enjoyed viewing the great collection of hunting implements.
Kimber .243 with a little karnis paint and bed job, little ar-15 i put together using spikes upper, daniel defense lightweight barrel, rock river parts group/bolt group and a Remington aac .308, bedded in a hs stock, oversized bolt knob/fluted bolt. Im about a month out for my tax stamp for a yhm suppressor for the aac, cant wait!
My wife, loves that .243!
Tikka .300 win mag with a black/red web b&c stock.
Indeed it is. It looks like mine has gone a few rounds more than your's has. I know from experience that you have a wonderful piece, in great condition too.
There are some beautiful firearms in here, however I personally have a soft spot for guns and knives that have had to work for a living. Your rifle looks as if it could tell some stories, around a campfire, that most other guns can only dream about. And that old folder stuck in the ground seems to match the rifle. Great old gun and knife. Thanks for sharing.
Stuvwxyz, thank you very much for the compliments on the rifle. This rifle has many stories to share and thankfully I can tell a few of them for it. It's a sweet piece and it has a special place in my collection.
All these beautiful places, gents a lot of you are very fortunate to live where you do. I'm stuck here in the rectal orifice of the Continental US, hot, humid, flat, Florida
What sort of bow is that? Very nice photo and perfectly appropriate for this thread in my opinion.
Thanks for the kudos; It's a Fedora 560 Hunter one piece recurve. 63# @28". Dad's pretty partial to them, he has two like this and two takedown versions.
Does this count? This is my son. He was about 10 at the time.. It is way back on some public land and I call this stump " The Old Man" I first found it in 1989. The shotgun is my Franchi 48.
7 mag and the accuracy is astounding..At least mine is..
I've been heard to make the comment, If the only thing I was interested in was accuracy, all my rifles would be Savage. and that is not meant as a derogatory statement.
What's the old saying about a blind hog finding an acorn. Here is a '99 that I stumbled onto a while back. Couldn't resits as it only had a $299 price tag on it.
IIRC I looked up the serial number and it the vintage was around 1903 IIRC. However I stand to be corrected on that. Anyhow it was chambered in 303 Savage and had an octagonal barrel. It seemed to be calling my name, and it followed me home.
Here's a web image of the rifle I bought for my wife, as a 24th Anniversary present, last September.
Mounted an other 2-7 x redfield on it & she shot 2 deer with it in the season just past !!
Savage model 11 Lady Hunter - 7mm-08
Oiled American walnut stock & accutrigger, 20"bbl & "lady specific stock & LOP.
Dead deer pics to follow.
Ha, ha, she's still making me take her on an Alaskan cruise & land tour this August, for our 25th !!
Paul.
What's not to like, a wife that shoots, beauty, accuracy and a 7mm-08 to boot. Sound like life is good. You'd get bored if I started posting pix of the stuff I've killed with 7-08. Out of the 57 different chamberings I have loaded for, it is one of my all time fav's.
As to the Savage, I've owned a number. I've stated on more than one occasion, if the only thing I was interested in was accuracy, all my rifles would be Savage. And that is not a put down. I'm about to pull the trigger on a American Classic in 250 Savage.
I think you'll love the Alakan cruise. We sure did. We did the "inner passage" Alaskan Cruise in '08 for our 30th. We got a "view" cabin where we could sit out and watch the shoreline as we went up. I took a couple cameras (w/ telephoto lenses) Leica 10 x 40's and a Leupold Spotting Scope. Started in Vancouver and made about a half dozen stops the circled the glaciers at College Fjord. Had a ball. Did it in mid July so we could see the salmon spawn, bears and eagles. I can't tell you how many bears, whales, porpoise and eagles we saw. The landscape, mountains, clouds and watefalls are breathtaking. This flatlander loved it. Hopefully you will too.
O.K. A little brag on Karnis. I bought a Pre-64 M70 Standard rifle in .30-06 last year just to have a Pre-64. The stock had a recoil pad before I bought it. After I got it, discovered it had also been bedded. I have wider palms, and short fingers. The stock just felt "thick" thru the grip area. So, after reading all of the positive comments about this guy named "Karnis", I struck up a conversation with him via PM. Explained that I wanted to thin out the grip area without necessarily loosing the appearance of the factory checkering. Just got it back last week, and I am very pleased ! First pic below is the "before". Second is the "after".
The finish and checkering are immaculate. But, the true compliment is that while I could "feel" the difference in the stock, the changes were not obvious until I compared the pictures.
Fellow Campfire Members; Thanks to all who've participated in the visual feast thus far and those who still might. I've enjoyed looking at them all.
Here's a couple of lever guns that we've got.
They are both 1977 vintage and chambered for .30-30. The 94 has been around for years and used to ride under my left leg on when I was looking through the ears of a horse on pleasure rides or chasing cows. Its camped all over BC with us too.
The 336 is a new arrival that just came out of the shop from the modifications I like to do on lever guns that stay around.
I've had a soft spot in my heart for lever guns ever since my late father came home with a straight grip 99 when I was maybe 6 or 7.
There's been a few come and go over the years, but the 94 has stayed the longest, mainly because as a '77 it's not worth much and then too because I seem to be able to hit stuff with it when I need to.
The jury is still out on the Marlin for me - the 2nd one I've owned - so we'll see how long it stays in the safe.
A "fence post" would've probably been "killin grounds" back in that muzzle loader's days.

True that... If you were a white man, you wouldn't want to set foot on this side of the Ohio River until probably 1800 or so.. If you valued yer hair, that is!

Certainly should be interesting to watch. It just gets better every day.

You got it all wrong. Muslims slaughter anyone that is not of their own sect. Sunnis have been slaughtering Shias and vice versa for centuries. Pretty clear that their prime directive has nothing to do with how we express our freedom.
If what you posted is what you think of Rick Bin's site, you can still express your freedom by clicking to a moderated forum that has less freedom.

ALOT of your generation was the same as this, or worse..... You just didn't have 362 channels, non-stop news or a computer to hear/see about it. I'm not sure guys have changed that much in the last 40 years.

Is that pic that offensive? Ya you can see much of her legs but that can be seen at a swiming pool too.
Offensive, no .... but just because its legal to perform an abortion up to six hours before the baby is to be born (assuming you kill it in the womb), does that make it right?
A totally clothed woman, who shows far less than the underwear ads in your Sunday Paper, is compared to killing a baby? WOW. You must really be offended by the 223ai thread....which you post on.

LOL........what a tool!!!!
A woman in a rather odd pose fully clothed is now kin to abortion? Yes she shows lots of leg but where can that not be seen?
It's retarted post like above that turn threads south not a pic of a woman.
So now that stupid pic is compared to abortion Obama Muslims anti God etc........to say that's stupid don't due justice. I'm at a loss of words for the stupidity....

Sexy women and guns don't bother me and most here. Still a terrific thread despite your tender feelers being offended.
Kaleb; I hope this finds you and yours well tonight sir.
This post isn't aimed at anything besides the thread in general. The saddle is on a rail between two posts, so that sort of counts?

Yes because somehow we've gone back in time to create the idea or misconception that Betty Page and pin-up art, both much more provocative, was some how alive and well back in the "good old days".
Nope - that's completely a MODERN thing that somehow was printed in black and white and mis-labeled as something from "back then".
Seems that everyone is defined by who they hate not who they "tolerate". Hell, now folks want to dictate to their favorite hated groups what they can and cannot do on their own time even.
In my half century, tolerance has disappeared and in fact, even the word "tolerance" has become hated.

-----oops--- Well, meant to. Guess i forgot to. Wife was rushing me out the restaraunt. Dont know why i "tolerate" that. Lol

At least we know she ain't the only 'gina on this thread...
I don't think it is possible to have a more perfecter Winchester than that one. And that is the classic caliber for it too. Looks both well used and well cared for. I think that might be my favorite in entire thread so far.
A totally clothed woman, who shows far less than the underwear ads in your Sunday Paper, is compared to killing a baby? WOW. You must really be offended by the 223ai thread....which you post on.
As I stated previously I am NOT offended. I was trying to make a point that yes you and your ilk have the right to schitt on every thread on the 24HCF. But is it right. Everyone jumped on someone because he didn't like it ... hell I'm a 'gina now. I do welcome you to Richland, WA to call me it my face ... we'll see how that turns out.
I love the the 223ai thread ... purdy wimmins and banter can cheer a guy up some days. But the 223ai thread is that we all know what to expect.
For the less than sharp among us, I don't equate nekkid women to abortion. I was simply pointing out allowable vs. right are two different animals. Burning Bibles are legal as is burning the American Flag. Hell, Westboro Baptist are allowed to protest the funerals of fallen service members. IMHO, not are right/proper.
So to the Merry Band of Turdlike Vultures/Bullies, feel free to use your first amendment right to call me a 'gina ... a tool ... a [bleep] ... or whatever else eases your sense of manhood.
You call me the overly sensitive one ... you guys are still whining and call me names a day and a half over a 2 sentence post .... yeah ... that sounds about right
Let's see if this keeps you going for another day and a half.
so...You are saying what you believe to be proper and true is the "RIGHT" way.... Someone else having a different opinion means "THEY" are wrong.
also....I do not believe I ever called you ANY name, unless offended is a name. However, you sure have no trouble calling names in your post, then invite me over so we can wrassel....Hmmm.
Well, I better get busy. According to you, Me and my "ilk" got ALOT of other threads to schit on.
P.S. I'm in Tri-Cities all the time. It sucks by the way.

A few of us on the Fire are God-fearin men. We dont feel were better than you or anyone else. Our relationship with God is personal. We dont hold you to our standards or judge you. What you do is between you, yourself, and God.
In todays environment, with the governmental and political corruption running rampant, its saddening to awaken to the fact that truth, honor, and respect have lost their meaning. And that such a large percentage of our population are deadheads racing feverishly on a figure 8 track, oblivious to the assaults on our liberty and freedoms.
Thus my rant. It is offensive for you to lack the common courtesy to understand that others, such as women and children visit this site. Fathers and Grandfathers showin younguns fine firearms of today and from days long gone.
Youve got your playground in the .223AI thread. Anyone that opens that knows damned quick if its offensive to them or not; they can stick around or scramble as fast as they please. Well over a million visitors prove its popularity.
To me, and I speak of myself alone, it is offensive, wholly disrespectful, and spawns evil. I would like to think that those thoughtlessly and cancerously spreading this to other threads would stop and think (or respect the fact) that 24hr Campfire belongs to us all.
I love the site and you can shoot arrows at me all you like, itll be like water off a ducks back.

Oh bullshit. You claim to not judge, or be superior, then go ahead and do it a few lines later.
If you are as pure as you so righteously and piously claim, you shouldn't be on any open forum on the internet.
Anyway the mods would maybe split this out so my inbox will stop being filled with people not posting fencepost pics?? Arguing over the internet is worse than arguing with... A fencepost...
You sound like that democrap Congressman McDermott blaming the Tea Party victims for the IRS scandal. "We" did nothing wrong and in fact "we" have posted a few "fence post" pics of weapons during the life of the thread, so I recommend that like me, just enjoy...

Sir, this is a fence post thread. Please refrain from non-post images. I will admit that you do have wood......in your pic. Nice squiggly thing there tho.

An old 250/3000 that was going to be thrown away as junk. None of the wood was salvagable. I restocked it. That and the gray metal makes it a rat I guess, but I like it. I kept the old weaver variable on it and it still works good enough.

Good on you for saving that 99. Did somebody use it as a tomato stake?
What's the old saying about a blind hog finding an acorn.
I love used guns. Especially if they have character. Every now and then I'll spy one I just can't live without.
Such was the case with this old Greener Trap Gun
12 gauge, 2-3/4" chamber, 32" barrel full choke. Ought to make a fine turkey gun, or up close hog blaster with 00 Buck. May turn it into a slug gun as I found a 12 bore blank that can be contoured and fitted to the gun.
Awwww.. even with the in-crowd mandatory Campfire Blue Tape...
just a nice thoughtful and peaceful look pic there Tanner...
poor guys who live east of the Mississippi don't know what they are missing...
first time I was "out west" was the summer of 1969... our Explorer Post went to Glacier and Waterton National Parks.. We hiked 294 miles that August in both of those parks...
I knew then, that I'd spend my adult years in the West...
Me too. I went to a gunshop in a real small town out in the middle of nowhere and he had this 280 mountain rifle on the wall. I asked the guy about it and he said that he couldn't sell the rifle to anyone. He said he could sell it if it was a 270 or 3006. I traded him a Stainless 700 in 30-06 and a non-matching parts mauser K98 to him for it. I tripped the B&C stock that came on it and he threw in 3 boxes of Federal Premium factory ammo loaded with 150gr Partitions. I took my McMillan KS Edge off of the 30-06 and put it on this rifle.
This is my 1952 MS in 257 Roberts. It has been around a while but still does a great job. It is a solid 1.5 inch rifle with enough groups under an inch to keep things interesting. No plastic, no stainless and no paint!

My CZ FS 9.3X62 after slightly modifying the original stock by slightly slimming the fore-end, modifying the cheek piece and installing a new recoil pad. Weighs 8 lbs. 3 oz. as pictured.
My usual load was suggested by John Barsness of 65 g. of Big game behind a 286 g. bullet. In my rifle these average about 2400 fps.
When the photos of the rifle were taken I had just fired it with a load of PRVI (Graf's) brass, Hornady 286 g. bullets, WLRM primers and 65 g. of Big game. I was shooting at water filled gallon plastic milk jugs at a paced 130 yards. Went 11 for 12, 2 from off-hand, 4 from the sitting position and 6 (including the miss) from an improvised rest.
I intend to use a load of the 270 Speer bullet behind 67 g. of BG for deer in thick cover this year. This load just reaches 2500 fps on my chronograph.
Since I slightly modified the stock; I can hold this rifle off-hand better than any of my other rifles. Felt recoil seems less with the new recoil pad which necessitated shortening the stock which also reduced the drop at heel. This may also affect my perception of recoil.
I have become very attached to this rifle in-spite of the fact that I am a recoil wimp and will be 69 in a few days.
Some folks don't like 'em but I shoot off a weighted lead sled when doing load development. In the field with the type of hunting I do, I very seldom need more than one shot. Being a young and excitable small boy of 62 years, my blood is usually up enough that the joy of taking game lasts longer than the miserey or memory of recoil.
CKW,Great looking rifle you have!!!! What is the scope and reticle on it? I have one of the Lipseys Limited Run Ruger 77 RSI stainless in 7mm-08 The Wood Fullsock always gets a second look from strangers at the shooting range. AMRA
AMRA, the scope is a Leupold 3X20 "Big Bore" with the standard duplex. I have a second one on the way. I will have the reticule changed by Leupold to either the post and duplex or the heavy duplex - I'm still mulling that over in my mind.
geedubya, those are beautiful Mannlicher stocked rifles, just looking at them makes my wallet go into spasms ! When I consider how much money the bottom one alone cost!
I do have two others, a CZ 452 22. LR and a Husqvarna 30-06.
Bump... And this is a bonafide, legit, for real, fence post..
The Mauser has new glass, Leupold VX-1 3-9. On sale in Lewistown, I couldn't resist. I'm leaning towards getting either a standard target turret, or an M1.. Elevation only.
I'm likin' it A LOT so far.. Super bright and clear... and cheap. I haven't shot the rifle with it on yet, but will before too long. FWIW, do you happen to know how much it costs to get a standard Leupold target turret installed? I know an M1 is right around $80.
I bought the LR Dotz model...these new ones have the same coatings on the lenses that VX-IIs used to have, and click adjustments. GOOD Bang for the buck!
Stuck mine on my .223AI and Im taking it to Tejas in May to kill Axis deer and pigs
Thanks.. That was what I was figuring on, but I wasn't sure as I have zero experience with turrets. Are M1s more user(beginner) friendly that standard target turrets?
They are basically the same thing, minus a threaded cap that you don't have to use (Target Turrets) and the way you reset the turret. The M1 is much easier to reset, because it uses one larger allen screw rather than 3 tiny ones like the TT's do.
From here on out, I'll use M1s. You'll be fine, you're way smarter than I was just starting with turrets.
Thanks.. I was leaning towards an M1 anyway, but I'll definitely go with them now. Easier is better for me! I probably won't get one for a little while(gotta buy trapping stuff!), but if all goes right I'll have it before winter.
Not a bonified fence post, but I think it will do. This is my 21" #4, Hart barreled Sako AIII in 358 Norma, McMillan Sako Hunter stock, Leopold VXIII 1.5520. It has become my "Go-To" rifle around here. I get warm fuzzy feeling knowing there is a nice big hole in the end of the barrel when I walk down a bear trail. Plus not many magnums can hold four in the mag, and one on the go hole.
My .300 Weatherby on a fence post overlooking Boz Angles with a herd of 60-70 Elk under the forearm.
It's a Vanguard action and barrel that I put into a Richards AA Fancy Claro Walnut stock that I hand checkered with my favorite wrap-around multi-panel pattern. I's pillar and glass bedded with a floating barrel. I put a Edwards mechanical reducer in the stock and fitted it with a Limbsaver recoil pad. Its wearing a Leupold VXI 4-12 scope and Leupold rings and bases. I had a KDF muzzle brake installed on it and the felt recoil is about the same as my light 7/8 oz 12 gauge Skeet loads.
It shoots several different bullets sub-moa, and will put three 168 gr TTSX bullets into a ragged hole at 100 yds.
So far its 9 for 9 one shot kills on North American and African critters.
Damn fine fence! Nice rifle too. I'm a locust post fella myself. Good longevity, but not as robust as what you have there. Love the Sako by the way. How do you like the Z3?
The 3-9 has great clarity & fov and its size seems just right. I have a VX3 2.5-8 on a Ruger as well, which is great too and did not cost as much!
Iron bark is the go-to timber for most of our fencing around here. Its getting harder to source.
I checked out Locust Wood on Google. I see its a close relative to an acacia down here called gidgee that is harder than iron bark (used out west for fence posts as well and burns exceedingly hot).

Thanks guys. It is a Model 92.. It's a slick little rifle, but .25-20 so hard to find brass and other reloading components for I think I might try and trade it for a .44-40 or .38-40.
mtcurman - if you decide to sell, I might be interested. If not, you might check out these guys - I believe the .25-20 WCF is easy to form from .32-20 that you can get here. But I don't claim that for a fact, so double check if you are inclined.
mtcurman, I had a new Marlin 1894 in .25-20.. Foolishly sold to my pal.. We bought new brass from somewhere.. Maybe Midway.. When I barreled up my .25-35 brass was tough to find, I think I got it at Graft's.. That is one fun gun.. I have tried to buy mine back several times.. He always changes the subject.. Just a real fun caliber..Enjoy..
His dad is my good buddy and hopefully I'll be there to watch him use it in a year or so on his first elk.
Here is how well he shoots it, a picture my buddy sent me:
Quote
So this is how the rifle shoots in the hands of a 9 year old. Granted he has had a bunch of trigger time for being 9 but I was impressed with his shooting and the rifle! Load was 53 grains of IMR-4350 and 130 grain Speer bullets, not max but no slouch load either, he said it kicks "insanely" but he shot it 4 times, then went on to shoot the .257 Roberts about 10 shots. Sorry for the picture camera phone. The orange center is 1" and the groups was shot from sandbags at 100 yards.
My new Browning A-Bolt .308 Win, with trimmed down barrel and stock. Wearing a Vortex Crossfire 2-7x32 (temporarily) until my Minox 1.5-8 and Talley ultra-low Lighweight rings come in off backorder.
Aw now that's just not fair! It's like a runway model of rifles. Something to dream about, but never be able to touch. I guess I'm old enough to appreciate the walnut and blued steel. Being a 284 aficionado doesn't help. I'm envious.
Thanks guys... It's got a little heft to it now..(grin) I might have to replace the flip-flop pad before too long. It's held up good but it's starting to peel a little on the edge.
Thanks Tom, I'm good for right now. I might end up leaving it be, that kinda smokey look is growing on me. But I'm a fan of sponge camo, so that's probably what it'll get. Have you been shooting any gophs lately?
The deuce looks better Don. You did a good job on both of 'em.. BTW, where did you get the triggerguard for the 600? I've probably asked ya that before, but me and Dad are tired of the factory plastic on our's and want the next step up.
Single Six faux ive-o-ree on a buffler skull...
I gotta get some new guns so I'll have something new to take pictures of on fenceposts.... grin
If all goes well I'll be heading out Thursday for 5 days of hunting. I'll make a special effort to get some pix of fence posts that I can photoshop into my pix.
Ahh. Slip ons and electrical tape. Those were the days....
Gorgeous, isn't it?
Always have grand plans of spiffing it up, re-bluing, re-finishing the wood, etc, but haven't yet. Someday...
Ben; It's seldom that your photos don't make this former flat lander smile and that shotgun on the rail fence with the badlands in the background is no exception.
Thanks for taking the time for the photos Ben - I trust you have an entire lifetime ahead of you to modify your guns so that will all come in good time.
All the best to you and your family this fall and good luck on your hunts too.
Poor tree had dreams of being a fence post. Only the good die young I guess Rem 700 7-08 MR sitting in a Hunters Edge, tripped by a Jewell, and wearing a 6x42 with a M1 in Talley LW's and some of Kampfeld's artwork.
Was a zoo, snowed and cold. I saw some good bulls taken but mine is just a meat bull, but short pack out and a 190-lbs of meat. Had a good time and was my first rifle taken elk. He took 2-165 grain Partitions.Sorry to get off topic.
Hey Highroad what are the specs on that rifle? Looks Great.
Thanks. Started life this spring as a stock 700 SPS 7-08.
- Cut barrel to 22.5" with 11 degree target crown - Tossed factory plastic and put in B&C Alaskan Ti - Installed Timney trigger - Had Karl flute bolt and skeletonize handle (bead blast finish to match factory) - Talley Lightweights with Leupold 6x36 with Dotz - Mountain sling - Weighs in at 7.25 lbs
I posted a picture of this one with a target scope on it a while back. This is what it looks like when it goes to the woods with me. Remington 141 with in 35 Remington with a 2.5X scope.

I love the barrel length on your 141. I have an old, beat up, rusty, Remington Model 14 in 35 Rem with a busted stock and a perfect bore that I resurrected. I might have to get my gunsmith to shorten the barrel on that "gem in the rough" a little.

do it!!! it is fun to chase rabbits or just plink with it! I cast a 200gr rcbs bullet for it.
It was an unintentional project. Like a lot of us we need a tinkering project and I was in Cabelas one day and they had this used "Cabelas exclusive edition" which means fluted barrel sps in 7mm rem mag. It looked hardly used but was less than $450 bucks so I'm thinking donor.
I took it out and shot it with just some Winchester 150 grain factory loads and it shot well but the cases were sticking. I didn't think those would have been hot factory loads so I loaded up some low velocity rounds and tried them and still sticking. After closer inspection I could tell it was rough chamber. Reamer must of dull out or something and this is probably why they got rid of it.
So, I polished the chamber very lightly for 5 seconds and the problem was solved.
It shot well enough I decided to keep the barrel and tinker so I bought a B&C Alaskan II stock, bedded it worked up some 145 barnes lrx loads with RL22 and thing shoots very good. So then the bolt went to Karl Kamfield for Ti fluting and his hunter knob, had a buddy cerakote it graphite black and even put a Pacific tool tapered lt weight bolt shroud on it. I put a Vortex viper lr 4x16x50 I had picked up and some talley rings and bases.
It shoots very good and holds it's accuracy out to 500 yards which is as far as I have shot it. I did take a lope at 426 yards last month. So, it was really just a factory spruce up.
Thanks Joe. It looks nicer in the pics than it is...has some freckling on the barrel and receiver but it's a good candidate for what I use it for, which is the short range thick stuff. After the Newtown incident when people were going crazy over AR's I traded a stripped lower that I had $0 net in straight across for the rifle. I bought the scope for $65 here on the Fire and rings and bases for $25. Add in the hammer extension and I'm sitting real pretty at $100 for a nice shooter grade 336 in 35 Rem.
I bought 3 stripped lowers for $99 each, traded one for the rifle, another for a S&W .357 revolver and sold the third for $300 so I was up two guns for free.
Both guys that I traded to knew it was a dumb trade on their part but they HAD to have an AR lower in case things went south with a ban.
Thanks Joe, It's factory but I don't think they made very many in this combination. I've heard they made them in .357 maximum too but I've never seen one.
Whats your pet hawg load? And whats your effective range? These two shoot a 300 grain cast over 21.5 gr of Win 296 pretty well. The carbine is about 1.5" at 100 if i do my part. I havent taken a shot at game at that range tho. Havent taken any shots at game with it yet in fact.
Joe, The thickets I hunt rarely ever give me a shot father that 50 or 60 yards.
My favorite load for these is a 250 grain LSWC over 12.5 grains of Blue Dot.
I like the sights on your rifle. I'll bet that's a lot faster and better sight picture than I get with the buck horn rear sight on mine. I'm going to have to find something better before long, My eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

Here is my first love, a Mauser 96 American in 06 that I took w/ me to the Black Hills of SD this year. I found this burned out stump in a drainage high above highway 16 between Hill City & Rapid City:
Nothing really heart stopping. Kind of a side project.
The FrankenMauser is just about complete. A re-barreled Polish small M98 Mauser action chambered in 6.5x55 Swedish, B&C Medalist stock, 22" ER Shaw barrel, Timmeny trigger, spare Interarms Mark X trigger guard.
I grew up in the era of sporterizing WWII rifles and I still pick those over most modern day firearms, so I can be really attracted to Frankenmausers Nice job.
Yep, I picked it up at Cabelas a while back.. Today was the first time I've used it, I like it. It's got some crazy sound for sure! I'm looking forward to trying it on cats.
That ought to work. The 2.5 x 8 Leupold is one of my favorite scopes. It don't "overpower" the rifle in more ways than one. Great background by the way. Best,

Haven't heard any complaints thus far, but then again most don't have much to say.
Shot this gal about 3 hours after rifle picture was taken
Sorry, but the closest fence post was about thrity miles away, and we thought a dead critter was closer to the true intent of a hunting rifle, since neither my S-I-L or I have ever shot a fence post, and certainly never tried to eat one.
This is his model 70 Winchester in 30-06. It is a lefty. It carries a Nikon 3-9X40 scope. Ammo is 150 grain Hornady BTSP Interlocks with a charge of H414.

Thanks for the reply. I like the peep sights much better than blade sights. I find it is easier to shoot later with them as well as being faster. Most of my non scoped guns have some sort of peep sight installed

I like that rifle and background. Here's my lowly ol Ruger m77 338 win mag this year during our (yes, I'm sentimental about this ol Ruger m77) elk hunt:
Heck yes! I need to get some Butler Creek flipper-uppers for it next trip to Lewistown though.. I hate messing with the stock bikini covers, especially in the snow..
I'm too old, tired, fat and lazy to get out there at -18 degrees!
I was thinking this morning though, there will be hungry canids out that that would respond well to a call right now..
I'd say the woofs and coyotes will respond very well in this balmy weather.. It was -40something this morning. It's warmed up to about -10 or so now. I tried one stand earlier(hence the Sako pic), but didn't see anything but a few deer.. I'll probably try again after a while.
mtcurman; I trust this finds you well so far this year and your coyote calling has led to some shooting and hitting too.
Way, way back when the local mountains were still pointy - maybe 2 decades I guess it must be now, I built this thing to shoot Okanagan coyotes.
It's an old school wartime 98 with a Wolff Blitzschnell mainspring, Timney trigger, Ruger 77 follower and spring, somebodies after market safety, a reworked $20 stock from a S&W rifle and a No. 4 contour 26" Douglas Premium Air Gauged 1 in 14" twist chambered in .22-.250AI.
I would heartily recommend not building a short AI on a 98 action - to anyone whether I liked them or not.....
Anyway, it's old school alright, but a lot of coyotes died out in front of it over the years.

Dwayne
That's a cool looking ol' rifle Dwayne! I wanted to make my Mauser either a Swift or a .22-250 when I first got, but now that I have the Sako, I'm glad I left the Mauser 8x57.. I haven't been calling as much as usual, I've been trying to get some traps out, but the snow's awful deep and the coyotes are mainly hanging around the ranches, or running the rivers and roads.. I'll git 'em, one way or another.. Hope you and your's have a great 2014!
Here's a dreadful cellphone picture of a new M70 Fwt 7x57 and an even newer (i.e., stiff!) Montana sling. I'll post a better one using a real camera next time. Just didn't want the thread to die.
By the way, no fence posts in the Florida sand ridge piney woods, but if you'll take a look at that slash pine you'll see where the hogs have been using it as a rub.
Put my 1978 10/22 (bought new in Red Bluff, California in June '78 for like $79 out the door) into an International yesterday. Bought that off one of our SRO Sgts. for $25.
Reason is simple: time to refinish the original walnut stock that has great figure for a loss-leader pre-beech gun.
Also cleaned the action for the third time in 36 years. Epic crud. Think I'm near 50,000 rounds through this ol' gal.
Anyways, the International plus a Micro T1 has converted my All-American Classic into a EuroTrash killing machine.
Zeroed at 50 yards with Velocitors. Used one to punch all the way through a coyote's skull from another rifle last summer. This svelte dog will Hunt!
My Grandfather's '94 Winchester. 22" octagonal barrel. Marked as using the 30 WCF cartridge. Date of manufacture = 1906. Original stock too!
Williams Tang Peep sight.
Don't have pictures but I also have my Granddad's Mod. 97 Winchester 30" full 12 ga. Took a nice turkey with it this year. Date of manufacture on that one = 1914
Ok, here are my contribs'. Sorry about the poor pics - I was using a cheap digital camera and the light at mid-day was not to my satisfacton.
FN Mauser/JC higgins, 270
DPMS LR-308, 7.62x51 cal
AR-15 (PSA lower - I fully assembled myself!) 5.56 cal
A pair of front-stuffers, these are two gifts from my FIL (they were in his cabinet, quietly collecting dust). One is a T/C Hawken .50 cal, and the other a slightly customized H&R 'Shikari' in .45 cal. Both from the 70's, the Shikari is in 98% condition, & the Hawken remains unfired
AB2506 Neat picture. Could you comment on your rifle sling?
I tried a Vero Vellini double sling.
I knew that I wasn't supposed to carry my own rifle (a tracker was supposed to), but if I did, because my back injury screwed up my left leg and I pretty much need trekking poles to walk on rough ground, a backpack type of sling might be handy. 1-800-cabelas and I had one to try. High quality but it better be at $90 a pop. I watched the trackers let the rifles rub on their knives, lay them on rocks or fences and get all scratched up.
By midway through the hunt, I was carrying my rifle pretty much all the time. Easier than trying to educate the trackers to take better care. That's why I like the Montana, easy to carry.
Sauer 101 .30-06 with Recknagel sights and cerakote finish 180 grs federal fusion factory ammo 120 meters (~130 yards) - female red fox kit
...but the main point is that it was a wonderful sunday morning
10/4
I quite understand. When folks ask me why I hunt, it is sometimes hard to explain the exhilaration that comes from being "afield". Taking game is only a part. Enjoying the beauty of the day coming to life......
Catching critters in their "un-awares"
or bearing witness to the approach of the gloaming
also, FWIW,
I am a fan of the Recknagel mounts...........
and Kipplaufs.
I picked up my first Sauer a while back, a model 200......
took a medium sized hoglet on its maiden outing.........
This is two Lee Enfield sporting rifles in the Lee speed style that I just finished stocking and while they are not out near a post as yet they are definitely built as hunting rifles and will be as soon as load development is done.
The top one (mine) is original while lower one I did for my friend and has had a rebarrel with a Lithgow target barrel with has aftermarket front sight having a green fiberoptic insert.
mtcurman; That's a good looking rifle and nicely done photo with the burn in the background. We've learned to use burns quite effectively for hunting over the years and once the smoke has gone view them as a good thing overall.
Anyway sir a few pages back I posted a photo of my old school coyote bomber built on a 98, so I thought I'd show you and the 'Fire my latest project as it stands this morning - a "new school" coyote and rock bomber so to speak.
It's a Ruger American standard model in .223 with the 1:8 twist barrel along with a Bushnell 3200 10X on top. The scope, paint and cheesecloth wrap on the barrel are fresh as of this morning so I can't report on that yet.
So far with the first 6X Leupold I had on it, initial testing seems to indicate it wants to shoot bullets of at least 60gr. I picked up the last box of 75gr Hornady Match in the "big" store up the valley, so that's the eventual goal for this rifle to launch at coyotes and misbehaving rocks this winter.
Anyway mtcurman, all the best to you and your family and good luck on your hunts this fall.
Will do...Randall has supplied them all to me...had to send the knife in the last time for a good fit...but its never been a problem.Im so old I bought that one from Bo himself...
Yeah, my dad and I had bought a couple Randalls, and I went off to college, lost touch, this was in 1972 when the waiting period was four years. Out of the clear blue, in college, I got a letter from Bo, said he has this knife he started for a guy and he backed out...he could have it to me in two weeks for the then princely sum of $52
This weekend the 1948 M336 has been getting to come out to play. Belonged to my Father in law's dad. I've had it for about 6 years. I'm yet to harvest anything with it as it usually stays in the safe, but it's only a matter of time!!
Wow Mike, That is a cool family piece. I would love to see a few detail shots. I have a long gone Springfield 03 in my past that calls out when I walk the isles at gun stores or shows. Someday a sporter is going to follow me home.
Geez...I wish I could find a fencepost in this country...
No you don't, LOL. Here in the Midwest we have em every 10 feet. Roads every square mile. Love he Western pics of wide open spaces and no fences. Wouldn't give up my timber and rolling hills but you can have the fences.
considering the foregoing, I'll take you at your word.........
That is a mighty fine collection of shooting irons. Betcha that wasnt built overnight. Good on ya. May have to call you the Duke of Winchester
Whats the line from the old song I was so much older then, Im younger than that now.. Dont know why, But Ive never had the drive to go Bat-schitt crazy on lever guns..
Well to be truthful, I do like some rifles with levers.
Gee, leverguns ain't all that good for collecting dust and that's the gospel according to Mr. Oliver W. and others of similar mind. Personally I've found them useful in places where I can't see far beyond my nose, but further than I might trust a load of buckshot. It has been my experience that they age well and often do things in old age they never dreamt of doing as kids.
Sometimes their best efforts get foiled by distractions such as rattlebugs gnawing on ankles and such.
Kinda new here so please forgive my ignorance and have a little mercy on a newbie. What's the purpose of the blue and black tape on the end of the barrel and/or halfway up the barrel?
Some gorgeous rifles, game, and scenery in this thread.
Here is a pic of my "campfire" 270. I bought the rifle here in the classifieds and the B&C stock and bottom metal here too. I got the idea and instruction for the web paint job here too. Thanks to everyone who contributed, I think she turned out well. Will
Thanks deernut, she's my first 270. If the wind will ever stop howling here, I've got some loads to try. She showed promise with some factory ammo before I bedded her in this stock so I've got high hopes!
I recently got this 260 back from Gre-Tan. I sent him a Sako round top L579 action that I rescued from a Browning Safari 243 salt wood stock. The action was in great shape. Broughton 5C 8" twist #3 contour, McM Sako Hunter edge. Weighs 7.5lbs as pictured. Scope mounts are difficult to find for the round top actions so rolling with the Buehlers for now.
Those 8mm mags are pretty cool. Collectible I would think. I remember when they first came out. A local fella bought one for our whitetails. I wasn't very old at the time, maybe 16. I thought that was the coolest cartridge ever. Nice rifle Swamplord.
Here's my Ruger Predator 22LR. I've had it a bit over a month and finally got it bloody over the weekend on backyard starlings. It came with the long stock module which, combined with the short scope rail, made eye relief at the bench a problem. A saw, a flip-flop, epoxy and sander made the problem go away. Yes, I could have ordered a short LOP module, I didn't have the patience, so DIY it was.
No fence post but the grass they grow from. I refinished my 303 Lee Speed styled sporting rifle with Buff Horn grip cap and forend tip
To match the 400 Lee Speed I just finished (The 400 lee speed is the 405 Win shortened slightly to a case length of 2.410 and loaded with a 320 gn bullet)
Just finished this build. Fencepost and dead animal pose to come this Fall.
Model 70 Action Krieger #4 Fluted 300WM Timney Trigger One Piece bottom metal Black Cerkote McMillan Dark McWoody with Red pad Talley LWs Leupold VX6 3-18 8lbs, 10oz.
That's what keeping me from buying a 9.3x57 because I just can't justify it. I have a .358 built on a M.70 and it's killed everything I've shot, including elk with one shot.
Here's a pic of my Marlin Model 39 which is the original or first version produced from 1922 to 1938 before the Model 39A, which was introduced in 1939. First rifle I ever shot with excluding my Daisy Red Ryder BB gun.
It is a Ruger front site that I installed on it with a NEGC rear sight. Most of the ime it wears a scope, but with the open sites and some 220 gr round nose it feels just about perfect.
So I've learned that Shrapnel (pretty sure is a.k.a Kirksbridgeshooter) and Gedubya have the best gun collections of Winchester, Sako, Sauer, Styer, etc.....no one's collection compares to what I've seen on this site ever. Thanks for sharing. I did however see a very nice looking 358 with a Leica scope and the rifle with that dark mc woody was quite nice.....
Latest shooting stick, untested, but will remedy that soon this upcoming rifle season. T3 Hunter in Swede from shortactionsmoker with Meopro from Cameraland.
OK here's one of mine not on a fence post but Rem 673 .350 rem mag on a table after a day bear hunting in northern Alberta last year. [img:center]http://[/img]
Here's a new one to me, fifty year old Husqvarna HVA Husky-5000 30-06. Love that slim forearm, the rails are only about a 16th. Remains unfired but that's soon to change. Just gave it a bath, free float and bedded the lug today and no complaints albeit a substantial trigger. Oh, relieved several areas in the stock known to cause cracking on these, fingers crossed I got it right. 8lbs7oz as pictured with 16oz scope.
It's not a fence post pic, but then there ain't any fences near this spot either. My latest tinkering Ruger tang safety in 7x64mm Brenneke. It seems to be working pretty well with 140gr Ballistic Tips.

Love those old Husky's. Yours is exceptionally nice.
Thanks. I sure like this Swede so far, simple and straightforward rifle. Hard to show just how virgin it is, the metal is flaw free and the wood has only about a half dozen handling dings... Dates to 1965.

I'm going to spend some time in a tree with this one this year. It's a Remington 14 1/2 in 44/40 and up close it should do fine on the local white tails.

I haven't had it long but so far I like it. Its an older Euro Diamond, no illumination. Glass quality is very nice though, very crisp, clean, and bright. The only things I don't like about it are the adjustments are kind of mushy and aren't marked with numbers for reference. I think it fits a deer rifle perfect though.
Winchester model 70 "Westerner" .243 Win, my very first "deer rifle" and the one that started my obsession with spiral bores. It was a Christmas present from my parents in 1981. Earlier this fall, I pulled it out of the safe and realized it had been about 15 years since I had killed a deer with it and at least 5 since I had even hunted with it, so I carried it this weekend hoping to slay another deer with it, but it wasn't to be. I most often reach for something more exotic to hunt with these days. This rifle is neither exotic nor fancy, and it is easily one of the most mundane rifles I own, but it means the world to me because my parents knew I was lusting for my very own deer rifle and they made it happen, even though they probably couldn't afford it. Even though I didn't shoot a deer with it this weekend, I just enjoyed being back in the woods with it and thinking back to the big grin my dearly departed Dad had on his face as I unwrapped it on Christmas morning 34 years ago.
Almost perfect treestand rifle for Volunteer State Highland Rim Swamp Transition Area. Sat on stand for Five hours this a.m. W this elderly TC Carbine w 16-in. Threaded .300 Blackout MGM bbl. Youth stock and Silencerco Harvester. No joy in Mudville, but saw a bobcat too far away to shoot scurrying back to swamp, 2 Redtail Hawks trying to make baby raptors, crows mock fighting, squirrels courting, geese flying 15 yards over my head, etc.
Good morning with temps in low 20s for half the morning. Son & I saw multiple does, but had made buck only pledge. Be in stands again on Thanksgiving. [img:left][/img]
Just got this one scoped, length of pull chopped down to 13" overall (did it myself) and need to lighten the trigger just a tad before sighting it in. This is in .243 and will make a great light do all rifle. For Deer to varmints anyways here in the South East.
Just posted this in the Deer Hunting thread. Custom .270 that has served me well for the last 25 years, but it's going to my son-in-law for his Christmas gift this year. Time to start moving some of my favorites to family and friends who will use them.

While scouting we saw a big bodied bull in this rocky draw, never pushed in to get a good look until the season opened. But he never showed up this day. I found another bull some days later in a different area.

Made some meat with the old .243 this evening. Very fat doe at about 170 yards with some 20+ year old PMC factory loads. I'm not going to wait 15 years again to shoot another with it...
This last week while elk hunting I had a yote bust up out of the snow and take off in a hurry. We were trying to get my daughter close to a herd, so I did not shoot. He came up with snow on top of his head and back, so I think I busted him sleeping in the mid morning sun.
Pretty big dog and really heavy coat on him, which was no surprise, as it was one of the colder places in the state and about 7,500 in elevation.
Here is an ugly critter to balance it out ........... And here is a pretty good West Virginia 10 point whitetail I killed with the same gun,and the same load
I hope one of those little bastids answers the call this February....
stay in a ratty ol' trailer or line shack. You'll prolly have better luck than calling. They're usually in between the walls fighting an screamin' when you're tryin to go to sleep. LOL
I have all kinds of nice knives (though not nearly as many as you), and for some reason I always end up with a Buck 110 or an old USA Sharpfinger on my belt when afield.
years ago when I was gainfully employed I learned you sell the "sizzle" not the steak. I have gone off the deep end collecting customs, but those are mainly for skinning or making meat, not daily carry.
This was my fav-o-rite knife ever!!!
Boker Full-Auto Top Lock.
I've hunted with a group of guys since 1999. Six of us each got one as a group buy in 2003. I don't know about ya'll, but I'm left handed and most opening assist knives are made for right handers, and they just don't seem to fit.
This boker on the other hand was perfect in my mind. Seems like I'm always in a nine-line bind when I need a knife. Whip it out of the sheath, press the button with my left index finger and voila. Had a guy replace the spring with a heavier spring than factory. It will almost jump out of your hand when the blade is unleashed.
Bet I opened 3000 Negra Modelo beer bottles with it before it got misplaced.
Anywho,
At my lease I'm strapped from the time I step out the door till I go to bed at night.
This is the rig I carry now.
Glock 20, loaded with either 180 or 200 gr. hollow-points. A Jerry Fisk/Whitewater Collaboration knife in Kydex carried horrizontal at the point of my right hip. I lost my Boker Top Lock Auto Conversion after 13 years and have not replaced it yet. I carry the Boker Kalashnikov Auto clipped into cargo pocket.
Daily carry, in town,
it is the Boker in Cargo pocket and the little Ken Honeycutt vertical on right hip. Depending on the day and where it might take me, I carry either the Glock 43 in a holster I made or the CZ 2075 RAMI P in a belt slide. The 43 is 7 + 1, the CZ is 14+1. The Glock is lighter and more concealable. The CZ is accompanied by several more friends.
I usually end up having a couple other fixed blades in which ever vehicle I drive.
While back friend Brad (aka Mac) started a trend by taking some incredible shots of his Lil Sky sitting on a fence post with the Crazies in the back ground.
I like hunting with the old ones sometimes. I got a nice doe with this Remington 30/06 last fall. I need to work up some loads the equivalent of a 30/30 for hunting in close. That little, narrow, steel butt plate will remind you of the power that a 30/06 has.

years ago when I was gainfully employed I learned you sell the "sizzle" not the steak. I have gone off the deep end collecting customs, but those are mainly for skinning or making meat, not daily carry.
This was my fav-o-rite knife ever!!!
Boker Full-Auto Top Lock.
Best,

GeeDub,
Your post made me think that I had a Boker Top Lock laying around somewhere. Well, after finding time to search through all the knives thrown on shelves in safes, I found it!
I'm gonna give the 110 a rest and give this a try. Seems I may have had it on my belt a time or two, but it is nearly new. If it worked for you, it should work for me!
Model 70 PF action. 270 Take-off barrel. Re-jeweled bolt. Re-blued by yours truly. Richard's MF stock (Rough Inlet) American Black Walnut shaped and finished by yours truly. Rings and bases from a drawer in the gun room, re-blued to match.. Old Denver Redfield Widefield. Modified Mag box from the original 2 pc set-up. Steel follower from another junk drawer. PTG Orbendorf Steel bottom metal. Basically it's a cheap-azz Frankenchester winter project. Laffin'!
Shot it for the first time today with some loads for one of my other rifles. Shows promise. Carried it afield for the first time, while checking game cameras. Figured I may see a coyote. Only saw some deer.
The first one is two weeks old and this one came yesterday. I plan to hunt the first one next year on our annual elk hunt. This one will stay in the box for now. I've only tried 150's so far but have 160's and 175's sitting on the reloading bench. Once I get some range data, I'm going to start a new thread.
Just got a fresh batch of Norma brass yesterday too, although I can't fault Prvi Partisan.
Thanks! I had a Rogers Super-Stoc laying around that I put on my LSS, but I need a cheek riser and it doesn't look like one will fit the Rogers, so I'm looking for something else.

Thanks Rev! Put a new bolt handle on it. It was in good shape when I got it. Didn't require much. The bolt handle that was on it was a little Dinky thing. I found this handle in a box of scrap at work. Came off an old Mark X Mauser. It had actually been broken off the bolt body!!! Never ceases to amaze me what people will do to their rifles!
Thanks! Was doing some ranch work that weekend. Walked up on that old boar in some off time. Got his head in the freezer. May get his skull out. Dunno?
Had a M1917 that came thru the shop that Keith had inspected. But someone had bubbatized the stock real bad on it!!! A shame! Yes them workhorses are overlooked many times!
John, it's like this one I posted earlier. An Oberndorf "B" with a pre64 winchester 30/06 bbl on it. I stuck the Lyman 48 on it one day at the shop.
Wonderful Bob... just wonderful...
Sadly my old eyeballs need that darn scope on top to see anything anymore...
ya know, we have a Back to the 50s each summer in our small town, that is well attended... on Saturday night the two north and south main streets are blocked off and they have a cruise for like 4 or 5 hours...

I think my taste in guns run like my taste in cars...
As for the 1903's, my grandfather worked at the 2nd street arsenal in Ogden. He moved from St, Anthony,ID to Ogden when the war broke out. He worked there from 1942 to 1974.
Anyway, he knew Elmer. Although I don't think that they were friends, just acquaintances. They were both from Idaho, and I guess they had similar back grounds in farming.
Back in those days, when I was just a kid and had no clue to who EK was. I'm sure that I read more than one of his articles.
Just how many gun writers had back grounds related to Idaho. O'Conner, Keith, Taffin ?
Anyway. Thanks for posting the pics of these grand old rifles.

You may be interested, each year we get the vintage Rolls Royce club and also the mini car club visit town to have their get-together here, it is a joy to see such effort.
Just recently there were an awful lot of vintage caravans coming through from a get-together in Queensland...those people really are serious about their hobby.
Correct. Had to double-check my post. Musta fat-fingered that one. Guess I had 788 on the brain since this rifle is related with the rear-locking bolt.
Definitely a 582.
That is a stock I fitted. I still have the factory birch stock, which is in very good shape. I just like walnut.
How's the feed mechanism holding up on yours? I've read that tube- feed wear out over time.
I've had a 581 since Christmas of '67. It's a good shooter, but this year I'm going to play with the bedding a bit to try and make it better. That single screw is kinda loosey-goosey.

Pappy,
I bought the rifle from a guy in South Dakota I worked with back in the early 90s. He used it to keep PDs out of the yard. It looked new when I bought it, and a Boyt case was included for the sum of 50 bucks.
The rifle fed perfectly until Fall last year. I had to work on it a little, but seems to be working pretty well now with some cleaning, smoothing and extractor work. When it starting messing up, I found that if you push on the rear of the bolt directly, it feeds like butter.
I've been playing around with the bedding on mine. I have not glassed anything, but found that it likes the barrel floated back to the shank. Still playing with it to figure out the best route to take. It does shoot very well.
Mine's floated, but there's some wiggle in the works. Gonna try a shim under the barrel.
I only had one mag for the first 30-some years, but picked one up at an LGS on impulse one day. Good thing, as the original started getting a bit balky at times soon after and 5-rounders are tough to find.
Great little cheap guns. Might pick up a 580 someday for grins.
45-70. it's an 1895SDT. I call it my Backcountry Belly Gun. I see a Marlin XLR in .450 on GB that could be cut to 16", but I don't really wanna set up for another cartridge right now.
Now you playin with my emotions. I can hold it together when you post pics of Marlins with safeties, but THIS is where it's at! That's a rare find there! I am jealous!!
I started out with one of these BLR'S in 308 Win and have come full circle. I found this one a few months ago while sitting on my sofa, browsing Gun Broker and before I knew it, the rifle was on the way to my dealer. It has been probably 35 years since I sold my first one. This one is a keeper.
This is my thick woods rifle. It is a Marlin 44 magnum with a custom 20 inch octagon barrel and a half magazine. The twist is 1 in 16 which I was a little concerned about but it shoots everything I've tried very well. I keep switching between a low powered scope and a receiver sight. I can't make my mind up between handy and being able to see.
Was on a roadtrip last week in the desert so i took a chance to get a fence post pic i may never get to get again. At least for a while. This is my Rossi 357 in Big Rob Gunleather.
And no trip to Vegas is complete without stopping in the desert and shooting rocks and playing cards.
I just got this 1903 Springfield sporterized by Bubba. It is in good shape and Bubba didn't do half bad on this one. I've been looking for several years for a high number 1903 that someone else has ruined any collector value on, but hadn't ruined the rifle completely, so that I could make a sporter similar to one I had in the late 60's. I plan on keeping this one an iron sight rifle and using it to hunt stands where most all shots will be less than 100 yards. It's long, heavy and probably won't come close to shooting minute of angle, but it's made of steel, walnut and the action is slick as a ribbon. I like it.
Just excited and liking the way it's coming together. Kimber Moontuna 6.5 Creedmoor topped with SWFA 12X. I got the brake from Brownells, blasted it and the trigger guard, coated the metal FDE and the stock OD Green Duracoat with grey micro-webbing(TM) beige and black specks topped with soft-touch clearcoat. Well, there's more to it than that, about 19 steps on the stock redo beyond the floating and bedding.... I'll put a bit more Soft Touch clearcoat on when I get it - I really like the feel over the texture that the webbing and speckles provide. So far, I've seen enough sub-moa to enjoy it and looking forward to more time afield. Will likely wear a SWFA 3-9. The trigger adjusted down very nicely. Did I mention I'm really liking this? I parted with several second string pieces of gear to get this and I'm slapping myself on the back for the move.
When asked by family members what I want for my birthday, I always say, I want to be hunting on my birthday! Luckily they understand and make allowances. I've had a wonderful week.I went to my deer lease last Saturday and enjoyed being in "deer camp" through my birthday. Tuesday night I had gone to one of my "stands" that is approximately two miles from camp and 1/2 mile off the road. It is approachable by foot or four-wheeler only due to the nature of the terrain. I sat for a couple of hours and since I had not seen much, decided to head back. It was about 45 minutes before dark. I packed up and loaded up the 4-wheeler and took off for camp. I got about 20 yds. and my ATV conked out. No bueno! Well, no cell signal and no radio this trip. So its hoof it back with a 25 lb. pack that does not have a good suspension system and a 9 lb. rifle. To make matters worse I was wearing a pair of soft soled rubber boots that are about 2 sizes too big. I usually use them to slip on and off when climbing out of my camper when its rainy and muddy out. Anywho, it took me about 45 minutes to walk "uphill in the snow fighting bears and alligators at every turn" Only had to stop once to take a breather. Made it back with daylight to spare.
At 65 I have come to the conclusion and acceptance that I am not as good, even once, as I ever was!
Ol' Faithful 50cal T/C, right after filling this year's doe tag last night. 8 deer to it's credit and the 250gr over 100gr BH209 keeps going in one side and out the other of each deer.
I'm a gun slut. Don't usually do customs, as one rarely makes a profit on a custom. I enjoy buying rifles pre-enjoyed at a value. IMHO, though butt ugly, the Steyr Pro-hunter line are probably the best value out there at the moment. They have an excellent two stage trigger, that can be adjusted to a set trigger IIRC correctly, and each of the 5 I own shoot sub-inch groups at 100 yds. I purchased each between $550 and $750.
Having said that, I've owned three Nosler rifles. Two M48 Custom Sporters and this Nosler Patriot that I bought here from JG Raider, when he was sluffing it off. It is boringly accurate and is chambered for the 7mm-08 cartridge (one of my fav's). It and a Steyr Mountain rifle in 308 Win. have become my go-to inclement weather rifles when I expect shots to be 200 yds. or under
We don't do much spot and stalk hunting due to the nature of the terrain. Most guys here hunt out of box blinds. I prefer to sit on the side of a hill or in an open air quad-pod or tri-pod. As was the case this last Tuesday, sometimes the air is thick with liquid sunshine! I luv the warmth of wood, but.........
If it is nasty out and I'm gonna stretch it out a bit, the M48 Custom Sporter in 325 WSM is a porker perforator for sure.
A few days before Christmas I had the opportuntity to employ the M48 Custom Sporter. I Waited till two of these critters lined up and nailed these two @ 175 yds. I'm not the best shot, but IMHO, it sure helps to have ultimate confidence in one's rifle. With my Noslers, that be the case!
On the flip side, there are numerous threads here one can read where folks denigrate the Nosler rifles.
Thanks. It is a factory "slim profile" 18.75" barrel. This one has a blued frame (the actual Talo's had case colored frames) and Buffalo Classic wood.
Unfortunately, H&R is no more. This was a limited run by Talo Distributing and is really hard to find. I've been looking for about two years before finding this. Of course, you can occasionally buy barrels on ebay for the cost of a Contender... but i refused to do that. They arent common at all.

My local gun shop bought an old collection accumulation of guns and let me have one of the first shots at it. I picked out this Sako Riihimaki in 222 Remington. It had been neglected for what appeared to be a long time, but it cleaned up pretty good. It looked to me like it would make a great woods walking rifle.
First shots with Hornady 50gr V-Max had bullets key holing at 25 yards. I was a little disappointed and found that the twist is about 1 in 16 inches. So it was back to the store for a box of Remington 50gr PSP. These went into about an inch at 100yards and all went in point first, which is a good sign. So any heavy bullets will be out, as well as boat tails and probably any plastic tipped bullets. I never have owned a 222 Rem before and I think this one will be fun to work up some loads for.

Killer rifle....I'm green.
You might try some 40gr Sierra HP's....they'll generally shoot in about anything.

What an elegant little rifle! I would bet it will keep the 40's in tight little clusters. My lust meter has pegged out!
Wasn't there a thread recently where someone was rebuilding one of those?
Couldn't say!
I bought a 12 bore barrel blank that I had planned to have turned and fitted to the barrel for a slug gun. However I was offered +/- twice what I paid for it. So, I figure it's hard to lose by making a profit and it followed another home!
This is a very recent "the price is right" rifle purchase. I don't run into rifles of this age in our area very often but couldn't pass this one up. It is a Remington 722 in 300 Savage. The scope is a Weaver K 2.5 that was taken off of something so long ago that I don't remember what or why. It boresighted with no problems. I'm going to shoot it shortly and hope that long forgotten problems don't come back to haunt me.
I just shot my Remington 722 in 300 Savage that I posted a photo of earlier. With factory Remington 150 grain it shot a group that measured 1.1 inches. For a rifle that is old enough to be a classic, even if it is too ugly to actually be one, it sure shoots good.

I had one in the late 1960's and it was a fine little rifle. Being young and bullet proof at the time, I handloaded a 150 grain bullet with the then max load of 44 grains of IMR-4064. Never gave any problems, brass lasted forever, and was very accurate. Should have kept it!

She's just plain, not ugly. Kind of like the girl next door. You're not sure why, but you just like her.

A useful cartridge, blued steel and real walnut makes a good combination almost every time. Nothing wrong with that rifle!

Wow - yours is sharp! Mine's been worked on a bit. Previous owner added the pad and checkering. It really likes Hornady Interlok 150SP driven hard with Varget. Enjoy your 722 300!
Thanks for all the comments guys. MtnBoomer, I like your setup. Mine came with a receiver sight too, but I already have a Remington model 30 set up that way. I just thought I'd put a period scope on one and see how it goes. I'm very satisfied, but checkering would be nice.
I used to take my Mosin snowshoeing. We'd stop at the turnaround point, I'd throw it in a pile of snow. We'd make some coffee and get some protein bars wolfed down. I'd grab the rifle out of the snowbank, kick the now frozen action open and make sure the barrel was clear, then shoot the crap out of it until it was hot enough to warm our hands. Good times.
When I was a kid I read about the mountain men, scouts, trappers, Davy Crockett, Dan'l Boone, and later Zane Grey's border trilogy. Back then I was too poor to pay attention and had hand-me-down.
As an adult I never got into percussion or flint-lock pieces.
Here lately, the thought of playing with such has been beginning to grow on me.

Thanks GW! I just finished it! Well I still have to brown the lock. But it's my rendition of a German Jäger rifle. Albeit a smaller calibre than most at .40. I find the .40 RB at 95 grains ample most of the time for my needs. Thanks again!
Edit! If I need anything bigger I have this Jäger too!

It's a .62 calibre!
cool stuff. i used to be on the .54 and .58 train, and have done a good bit of blasting w .69's (thats what she said). then i discovered that i liked less recoil a LOT more.
Here's an unmatched pair, heavy and not. The texture and soft touch really feel good - still trying to place what the feel is like - very grippy. Thanks Randy for the chance to do 'em and for the assembled pics! Happy hunting this Fall.
GW, I did the exact same thing. I resisted forever & then I bought one of each, a Flint River Armory 45 ACP Carbine & an MDT chassis for my Rem 700 in 308.
Showing a grandson a couple rifles other night while the wimmens were yakking... Handed this to him about #3. Eyes lit up as soon as he had it in his hands. Even tho the Kimber Ascent was lighter, he still liked the fit and feel of the Pre-64 FWT in the McEdge best... The boy has good taste !
Husqvarna H-5000. It's a lightweight 30-06 on a commerical small-ring Mauser action, but Leupold's version of the Hubble Space Telescope makes it far heavier than necessary. This one will probably get a fixed 4x before long.

Not quite a fence post but just a few weeks old. Win M70 416 Remington with JimWisner front and rear sights and Talley QD's dropped into a McM magnum filled Winchester Express stock.
New stainless T3x in 7mm-08. Sent it to Kampfeld and had the barrel bobbed to 21" and partially fluted (something a bit different if only for aesthetics). Found a rockin deal on a Trijicon 3-9x40 with green mil-dot reticle in the classifieds (thanks sdbrown3). Talley extra lows . The stock was replaced with a donor T3 takeoff I picked up cheap. Slimmed it down and removed the forearm texture and then sent it off for a hydrodip in Atacs Au. Comes in exactly at 7 lbs minus the sling. As soon as I have the bolt fluted should bring it in just a touch south of 7 lbs all up.

Nice ensemble there kaywoodie! what calibers are they? Model 12 looks like a 12 gauge. I'm assuming the krag is a 30-40.. the '95s are your 35 wcf and a 30-40? but I don't recollect hearing about the 94 win and the model 8 Remington. I think I remember the Colt being a 32-20 don't recollect you talking about the S&W American clone there 44-40 or 45 colt?
I got a chance to buy this Hi-Standard 30/06 by Husqvarna and jumped on it. First time in the woods with it I got a nice 8 point. I love blued steel and walnut even is if it is as plane as can be...
There he is... Beautiful buck and beautiful rifle. What chamber?
Thanks! It's a Savage 99R in 300 Savage. I believe it was made in 1950. I was shooting 150 factory Remington core-lokts. Need to get 2x7 Leupold on it someday. I bought that rifle here off the 'fire.
I love shooting coyotes, but I love coyotes.. Smart, fun to hunt, and they give me more hunting time than all my other game combined.. Bless the little bastards...
not a monster but the best I've ever had cross my path.
No camo, blue jeans & plaid? No titanium action, Ultramagnum, bipod, Hubbell telescope with multiple crank knobs, space grade synthetic stock & NO FLUTING??!!

However, unless the user deleted their photobucket account, every old photobucket image is still linked on this website (and every other place on the internet).
There are Free Add-Ons available for both Chrome and Firefox, which will let you choose to see the original photo instead of the "ransom block" image, throughout the Internet.

Dober's thread has certainly become an annuity thread, but well worth the time and effort because many visitors can see their own rifles with different sight options without spending the dollars. John
Thought I would post a Husqvarna that my wife gave me. I think it is a model 458. I have been looking for a nice mannlicher stocked rifle for some time and the fact that this one has fiddleback grain is the icing on the cake. It's a 243 and like all Husqvarnas I've owned, it shoots small groups. Looks like this one is going to be a keeper.

Sounds like your wife Is a keeper too....
She definitely is a keeper. I just hope n pray that she continues to think that I am....
Nice! Mine is pretty plain in comparison. But a good shooter. I heard they were discontinuing the Classic, and wanted to get one,so I bought her. She came right around with an old standby load. 270 150 grain BT and H4831. A couple sighters then these 3.
Saintly Springfield with a Swiffer 1-4... Takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’... Was busting big chunks of river ice as they were floating by with it today, just about the funnest “reactive” target out there.
This one is a Bubba'd up Mexican Mauser that I am trying to restore some life to. The barrel was toast, the stock had been glass bedded by Bubba him self, but it had fiddleback figure from one end to the other! I replaced the original Mauser barrel with a feather weight Pac-Nor barrel in 7mm Mauser and had a fresh coat of Cerakote put on the metal, With the stock re bedded by a real gunsmith, all I need to do now is put a Timney trigger on it, and refinish the stock. Then I will call it good. Shoots into about an inch at 100 right now so I'm happy.

I shoot that exact load in my 280 with 140’s & it shoots one hole groups.
Shoots into about an inch at 100 right now so I'm happy.
you mean there wasn't even a golf car or a gate handy??
What is the "Petting Zoo" coming to!
Quien Sabe,
GWB
Nope! no fences, hence no gates. The golf cart got flooded out in a flash flood and left us stranded out in the wilderness.....couldn't even get to the peanut vendor stand at the petting zoo!
A pair of 700s. A .280 CDL SF, and an American Wilderness Rifle in 30-06. Two bull elk on the far hillside behind the .280 and on the wrong side of the fence posts...
drano, Your in for a treat. Holler at me and we'll go there. It's just a few minutes off Interstate-30 at Bryant. Eight different ranges with covered sheds to shoot from. Benches, steel plates, plywood, shotgun and pistol ranges. Top notch private gated club for $100 a year that never closes.

It belonged to my grandfather, then my father had it and only shot it a few times. After my father left us, I grabbed all of the guns, my brothers aren't interested in shooting or hunting. It was always in the rack when I was a kid, but I never shot it until about a month ago. When I got it about 2 years ago, I took it apart and cleaned it and put it in the safe until recently. I might have to try it out this fall and kill a deer with it.
The beauty of a fine rifle is only surpassed by the beauty of Montana. Pigs is fun to shoot, but we have more vermin than that to shoot and big game as well. “I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion. And this is true to the extent that people either passionately love Texas or passionately hate it and, as in other religions, few people dare to inspect it for fear of losing their bearings in mystery or paradox. But I think there will be little quarrel with my feeling that Texas is one thing. For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America. Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study, and the passionate possession of all Texans.” John Steinbeck!

Another place without a fence post, but it is still an appreciation for why we cruise the Campfire. This is a Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout from the Lamar river in Yellowstone Park. The rod is a Tom Morgan Rodsmith 3 weight with Abel reel and double taper line with 6X tippet and a size 20 ant...

And a pawnshop rescue. New Haven Classic in 30-06, G-prefix 5-digit SN, Bansner stock. Got it for less than the cost of the action and added the Leupold VX-R 3-9x40 with Ballistic Firedot reticle. Winchester factory 180-grain PowerPoints chronograph at exactly 2,700 fps, which is gratifying. The money-shot paint job has since been covered up with matte finish olive drab Krylon.
There's a marked shortage of fence posts in my life these days. I need to do something about that.
Built by Maurice (Mac) McCain who worked for Paul Jaeger. Mauser action, Douglas Supreme barrel, Bastogne Walnut stock, Niedner buttplate and grip cap, Ebony forend and Timney trigger. It was built in 1980 and had never been fired other than test firing until I got it...
Strip cross patch w/false muzzle and lots of etc. Shoots better than it's 150+/- years would have you think. Took second out in Cody a few years back with a 16G25 crosswind at 100 yards. Couple of days here and there without the wind and it runs around 1.5-2 MOA with a flat nose/base picket style bullet. Have a 650 grain torpedo that I haven't shot yet. One of these days....
Technically a Faux Alpine because it was assembled using a lightweight barreled action from one of the Kuiu stock rifles and one of the Alpine stocks. However it is spec'd exactly the same as a true Alpine.
This is the last rifle my son High Brass bought. Our daughter-in-law gave it to Chad's best friend Ryan (Rye77). It's a Ruger 77 MKII stainless 308 with a laminate stock and a 3x9 CDS. I gave Ryan the scope so all 3 of us are together in the woods when Ryan hunts with it.
Shrap (Kirk), looks like you're a bit further East...
It is for sure almost identical pictures, how can that happen? Your picture has sagebrush, mine is open field, yet the same identifying hills are in the background...

For sure!
Your shot was taken on the Park County side of the valley closer to Wilsall...
Remington 722 in 308 win. This rifle went to Africa with my late wife almost 20 years ago on a plains game hunt. She used it to kill kudu, impala, bushbuck and more. Now my son hunts with it exclusively.
Tikka T3 stainless fluted in 308 win with a 6x MQ. Used to be mine, but a Marine friend wanted it and we made a deal.
We were hunting the farms near Dixie, WA. Lots of does, some small bucks, nothing worth shooting at.
A pair of 7mm-08s. A Winchester Model 70 Fwt. with a Leupold VX3i 2.5-8 in Talley LW lows (7 lb. 11 oz.), and a Remington Model 7 with Timney trigger, Leuplod VX1 2-7, Talley LW lows in a B&C Medalist (6 lb. 10 oz). Nosler Ballistic tips for both - 150 grain over 41.0 gr. Varget at 2675 fps for the M70 and 120 grain over 40.0 gr. H4895 at 2800 fps for the M7.
5.5” barrel. Full length ejector rod and housing. 6 round cylinder. Millet rear and Harton made patridge front. Belt Mt. base pin. Cerakoted alloy parts. Nitre blue pins and screws. Reblued metal. Maple grips I made. Rounded butt. Super Blackhawk hammer spur grafted to factory hammer. Action job. She’s tight as a bank vault.
Not a gente or post picture, but a quick indoors slapped picture, on the stairs rail. Close enough
7mm RM Savage 110. Bought it from someone who got it off a used rack... shoots well 160gr partitions and Sierra GKs. I have some 168gr VLDs to try and see
Had cheap rings and off brand 4x32mm scope. As it is now:
Zeiss Conquest 3-9×40 Burris Signature Zee rings McMillan Game Scout
.35 WCF. Ambush on small herd after about 1/2 mile stalk. Walking shot in timber. Abt 40 yds. Second shot about 70 Both good and clean thru boiler room. .200 grain Hornady rN 46 grains IMr 4064
yep I like the Remington's. and I hut with the from time to time. the one with the bigger 8 point and on the wood is my early model 81 from 1938 in 35 rem. the one with the smaller buck is my 32 rem. model 8 rem. the coon is with my 25 rem. made in 1908 1927
My son and I gearing up to head out on the Missouri opener. Rock River LAR-8 X-1 w/Bushnell LRTS on the left. Larue 6.5 Grendel w/Bushnell LRHSi on the right.
Sorry couldn't find a fence...so I figured id use the next best thing. [/img]
Whoa, DUCKBRX, that's a heckuva 6 pointer. I saw one similar a few years ago in Missouri in an antler point restricted area - biggest 6 point I've ever seen and I had to let it walk.
Thanks, I like it a lot and it seems to be holding up well. The rifle is coated with a Brownells bake on spray I'm just not sure of which one.
My gunsmith buddy uses cerakote, dura coat or whatever the customer wants. I had him paint mine at the same time as a bunch of his other work was using that gray parkerized color. It does look good with the Smurf Mickey.
I hate to see the fence post thread buried so here goes.

This one started as a FN Imperial grade Mauser my father in law bought a couple of months before I was born in '61 for the sum of $165. Chet Brown re-barreled it in the late 70's and I had his son Mark finish it off last year. Nice handling rig.

VERY nice photo indeed! Tells the whole story of the hunt, and is nicely composed too.
Speaking of the whole story, I guess that is a sesmic line, right?
John
Thanks for all the comments.
It’s a gas line to a couple of different well sites. Nice to get back in off the road a ways...no one else seems to do it around there. He was the third buck I had seen on that line in that particular spot. Lots of moose sign as well. Wolves had been hanging out right there, howling for most of the days. Was hoping to come across some elk but they were hiding somewhere else.
Nothing special here, R700 in 308. This rifle is a close to perfect setup for hunting around here though. Found most of what you see here in the classifieds.

That's pretty much perfect for hunting anywhere. Is that a 22" barrel?
I wasn't planning on this being my first fence post photo but I took this picture today after screwing on a 20" 6.5 PRC barrel yesterday. Rifle is a Kimber Montana 8400 WSM with a 6.5 PRC barrel. The suppressor is a SilencerCo Harvester and the weight as shown is 8lb 5oz. If the rifle shoots well I'll most likely swap out the Vortex for a 1" tubed Zeiss Conquest or similar.

Marlin 336 in 44 magnum. I love this thing! I bought one in 1967 when I was in high school working part time. I gave it to my son and soon realized I needed another one. So when I saw this one for sale I grabbed it. It shoots just as good as my first one and it is a keeper.
Walked into the local gun shop yesterday and saw this Sako sitting in the used gun rack. It was still there when I went in again today...I took that as a sign that I was supposed to have it. After selling the scope, I figured I have less than $500 in it. It is a 308 Forester L579. Has a few sprinkles of pits (in places that don't matter and aren't very noticeable) that I can live with. The action and bore are in great condition. If it will shoot half as good as other Sako rifles I have owned, it will be a good one.
thats a beaut. always wanted one that was in good shape but also ruined by being D&T’d and as much trigger work as can be done on them. i would mount a little 4x and shoot the crap outta it.
Haven’t looked recently. Got my first 284 a while back and was able to get brass at that time - think I have 100 pieces there. I also snag cheap ammo and partial boxes at gun shows when I find them.
Like the pic of the Savage Combo rifle. I'm not sure about the other 22 is that a CZ?
Details on the custom barreled ultra light Ruger 77
Top one is an older "brazed" barreled 22/410 combo gun... shooting 22 Remington Subsonics, it's more accurate than the tiny open sights are good for. It's a fun gun to take squirrel hunting.
Middle rifle is a CZ 452 Silhouette topped with a Burris 6x HBR. The buttpad finally 'melted' off not long after that picture was taken while out squirrel hunting. Redneck on this forum fitted a new red decelerator pad for me earlier this year, looks sharp!
The Ruger 77 Ultra Light started off as a standard tang 77. I had the stainless Shilen #1 tube screwed on and chopped just past 21" and chambered in 257 Roberts. I added a Rifle Basix trigger (or maybe it was a Timney, I cant recall now) and bedded it in a UL stock. Topped it off with a M8 6x36. Turned out to be a fine shooter with just about any bullet I run through it so long as the powder is 4350. Nice little rifle.
David... that one is a carbon-fiber-barreled 17Mach2...when leaves drop i usually make my way over to a friend's pecan orchard & stack up squirrels; it has some fairly open areas so i often take a .17 of some sort...now & then even take a 17hornet, or 17ackley hornet.
last few years we've had increasing numbers of hogs on the place so i've mostly packed .22mags for the added punch...couple more pics from that spot:
Anschutz WMR:
T-Bolt in 22mag:
occasionally we just skip the rimfires & go strolling for pigs too.
Nice looking pair, can you give some info on the stocks?
Those rifles are Remington 700 LVSF's (Light Varmint Stainless Fluted). Those stocks are what came on the LVSF from the factory and are made by Bell & Carlson. People often swap them out for the Ti stocks like seen below.
I didn’t make the calls. The cat with the 22mag in the snow was called in with a critter call peewee, the next pic is a ruthless rabbit from Kerry carver, and the 3rd cat was called in using a coaxer from Rick Robbins and a swift call from Kerry carver
Kimber 84M with Proof Research .308 Win barrel in Open Country stock, CDI Precision bottom metal, AICS magazine and Zeiss HD5 3-15x scope. 7lb 15oz as shown with a SilencerCo Harvester can.
Newest gun for me and also the oldest. A good friend has been thinning the herd and gifted a family heirloom to me. This 1906 Winchester was purchased new in 1919 by his father and was used extensively by him and later by Frank Jr. in the vineyards to keep the pests knocked down and put rabbits on the table.
I have that Magpul stock on one of my AR's. It's short. Put a 16" barrel with no flash hider or a 14.5" barrel with a flash hider to make it just 16" and the total rifle is just over 32" long. It makes for a nice tractor or combine rifle.

Not a fence post, but a pair of old Rugers on a deer hunt. That Leupold VX3 4.5-14 is too much scope for that rifle (223) Got a FX-II 4x on the way to replace it. I did end up taking a doe later in the day with it.
my model 14 rem. carbine in 30 remington cal. I found it in a pawn shop for 170.00 bucks. when I got it, it had so much crud on it you could barely make out the grain in the stock. but I took care of that. the bore is pristine and it shoots like the day it was made in 1912,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
My lowly Remington 78 Sportsman 308W with the barrel cut to 20", Timney Trigger, bedded in a B&C Stock. Nightforce SHV, and Hybrid-46 suppressor. Pretty soft shooting without the suppressor, really soft shooting now.
Shoots the Hornady 168 BTHPs rather well.
It was shooting the 168 ELD-M like this prior to getting the barrel cut, but that load opened up to 2" so I have to redo some load development.
RimX from ZAI/Bighorn, Proof barrel. I already played musical stocks....
Huntsman - this is probably a dumb question, but what kind of paint do you use and do you prime anything if you're just adding the camo pattern but not changing base color?
Thanks guys, I picked it up recently from a ‘Fire member and worked up an accurate 100 Gr. Partition handload. Took a nice forkhorn last week with it. My daughter will have a turn with it next.....
I do like the SS/walnut combo - it cost me some change recently when another 'fire member posted one in the classifieds. Then a buddy of mine saw it and had to have one too, so I sourced him a stock from the 'fire for his M77 all-weather
Thanks Joe! .308 win R700 action Pac Nor barrel finished at 20-3/4” Magnum contour at the lug and the muzzle is .670, it’s just a skosh heavier than a magnum contour. McMillan HTG stock Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 She ain’t light and she ain’t heavy but it balances and points perfect for me. I can’t remember what it weighs but I will find out.

Thanks! This is probably my favorite rifle now; it hammers with cheap-ass Win ammo. A .30-06, 4X scope and 180 grain ammo...what else do you need? And it's gorgeous in a steel and walnut way.

Great set-up, but I gotta ask: What 4x? Looks like an old Weaver.

It's a Lyman All-American. Later Permacenter version. It went back to the Lyman folks years ago to get a duplex reticle, tune-up and a reseal. For an older scope (early '80's) it's clear and bright. Bob
Thanks. I wish someone with some pull would get one of the companies to make a 4x again. I know markets, economics, etc., but Meopta makes a 6x hunting scope and someone must be buying it as they're still making it. That Lyman looks good on that rifle.
New place I bought has limestone fence posts. I'll get a pic of one of those with a Win 94 on it, maybe a dead deer somewhere around it. For now, have to use a deer.

Took my grandad’s old Western Field Mauser out for a nostalgic hunt. I need to replace the Quad-Locks with some old Weavers to get it period correct. The trigger is horrid, and the Pachmayr White Line is crushed from decades of storage, but otherwise it is in great shape and shoots really well.
It is my RimX .22. AG Privateer stock Proof 20" CF barrel, TT Diamond, 3-12 LRTS and TB takedown22 can. All I did is add the green paint since these pics...
Tried to find a use for this Kickeez Patriot pad. Had this Franken 270 mtn build laying around.... SS Rem barrel, chopped to 17" and threaded, a slimmed down Stocky's Composite stock with aluminum Accublock, Take off chincy type Rem bottom metal, old CM action, budget optic/mounts, Sightron S1 mil dot 3-9. All feels pretty darn good for the entry price. Timney 510, I likey. Graphite Black Cerakote and Royal blue Duracoat that needed used up.
WoW! do I like that picture and that rifle...That is a picture that says its worth a thousand words...
Fills my head with hunting memories....
been a while since I checked in on this thread.. so page 350 is all I am going to look at... so other nice rifle pics on this page also...
If I went on, I'd be on this thread ALL day and not get a darn thing done today.... and I have a busy day with the sun shining and not a cloud in the sky
Great pics Hutch and Colt, and RedVanes.... and can't forget Don's.
puts you right there in your mind... anyone of those would make great pics for a catalog on those rifles or scopes or moderators...
Looks delicious! I was lazy and took mine in and had the entire deer done into polish sausage, Hungarian farmers sausage and jalapeño cheddar smokies. It’s all very good. Won’t last long

After a revision. Cut barrel from 26" to 23" (3.6 oz) and fluted (8oz), lost 11.6 ounces and got an experimental blast of Gloss Black Cerakote. Here is the one I grab without hesitation 100% of the time chasing game here in Idaho and west...Pushing 8 years old now and has around 25 kills under its belt from myself, friends and family including mule deer, elk, bear, antelope, and Shiras moose.
Tikka Superlite 7 rem mag. Bedded in a Sako Classic McMillan stock, radial brake of matching contour. Zeiss pic rings and a 4-16x50 Zeiss V4. Shoots 150 grain scenars at 3150. It has scratches, nicks, wear marks - it's purely a killing tool that is not treated well - but it does its job without hesitation.
My Rem 700 BDL in 7 mm RM that I've had for about 20 years. This summer I made a few modifications to a Weatherby Vanguard Griptonite stock so that the Rem 700 would fit in it.
Not a monster but she was very happy and with her health issues a job well done. Tough day for her. M70 270 Win shooting 130gr partitions. Little more interesting than a fence post

I know this isn't a fence post, but I was parked close to one when I took this photo of my Sako 30/06 on the back seat of my truck. I was coming home from a very good day at the range and I'm ready for deer season.
ARs have had my attention lately but I dod have this old Winchester out the other day. It is a fun little plinker that I don’t get out often but it holds a lot of sentimental value to me.
I looked for a while for a rifle by P O Ackley. I found this one this past summer and it is ready for the deer season opening day. It is built on my favorite action the Husqvarna 1600 with the steel floor plate. It is chambered for the 7mmX57. It has a checkered steel trapdoor but plate and engraved grip cap. The early Monti Carlo cheek piece design and steel but plate seem to enhance recoil...but it shoots great! One shot is all I ask and then it will be headed for the safe.

J. Is that one a accuguard? Looks a bit like mine.
It’s the Weatherby Vanguard wilderness 26”
Looks like a couple of peas off the same plant. Please bring yours to the Hog Hunt. I'm thinking I'ma gonna bring mine to the Aoudad hunt the week before. Hoping it gets bloodied.
I've been making some room in the gun safe lately and sold my number two bolt action deer rifle. It was a Husqvarna 30/06. I realized that selling it was a mistake, but I hadn't planned on replacing it until I saw this Tradewinds Husky in 30/06. This ones a keeper...
Thanks! Cooper M92 280AI, 22" barrel. NXS 2.5-10x42. Killed my first elk, antelope, and mule deer with it as well as a pile of whitetail, coyotes, and hogs. Had a muzzle brake on it since I got it 5 years ago until yesterday, when I installed the little Wyoming Arms suppressor and I love it. Its 8 pounds with a full mag, sling, Nightforce'd and Suppressed ha. Even got to try it out this morning with the new suppressor, the does this guy was chasing scattered in every direction when I shot, they had no idea where it came from it seemed.
Thought I'd reskin the old 30-06 this year for a project. Sent it off to Birdsong for black t coating(turn time 5 weeks at present) and dropped it into a new McWalnut stock. Its been a long time since I had Birdsong coat a gun and they did great work. May have to have them do a tan one next. Anyway, they coated the rail and seekins rings too so need to get things bolted up.
This is such a great thread. I think I've actually gone through all 181 pages. I don't think I missed any. What I like best is not only the pics of the rifles, but seeing them in everyone's individual countryside settings.
This is a Sako L 579 from 1971 in 308 Win. When I found it, it was languishing in the "make an offer and take it" section of the local gun shop's used gun rack. It looked like it had been under the seat of someone's work truck for years. I lowballed them on it and it was mine. I sold the vintage scope off of it and my investment in it became embarrassingly low.
I had plans to re barrel it to 7mm08 because I already had a couple of 308's. I made the mistake of shooting it first and it still wears the original 308 Win barrel. It has displaced a couple of 308's I had in my safe. The barrel had some serious pits on the outside near the muzzle and most of the blue was gone. Cutting a couple of inches off the barrel took care of the pits and a Cerakote re finish brought it back from near death. A light refinish of the beat up stock and I called it resurrected! The wood is as plane as it gets and the metal has an eggshell/black finish now. Just what I wanted! I can't wait for deer season!

This is such a great thread. I think I've actually gone through all 181 pages. I don't think I missed any. What I like best is not only the pics of the rifles, but seeing them in everyone's individual countryside settings.
A pair of 700s. A .280 CDL SF, and an American Wilderness Rifle in 30-06. Two bull elk on the far hillside behind the .280 and on the wrong side of the fence posts...

458 Lott, that's a nice looking "heap pile 'o gun", Rapier!
Had a neighbor stop by last week, I sure want to shoot a heavy rifle one day, I have a 500 Smith pistol and it is great .... Look under that rifle, that is a big gun, yep, it is a 458 Lott look under and behind it, now open the blue MTM box, it had 100 of the 500 grain solids in it, at about 2,450 fps each. Now, It will change your mind and rearrange your dental x-ray pictures all at the same time.
Nope, I do not think I want to shoot that....OK. :-) Very quick way to put an end to all that macho mess.
Hey Gee, that's a beautiful rifle. The 404 is what Prince What's-His-Name uses for the driven hunts one Wild Boar Fever. That guy can work a bolt!
With many of my rifles, there is a story behind it. It took almost two years to acquire it after I first spotted it.
Readers Digest Condensed Version (Making a long story short)........
My passion is perforating porkers, so when I came upon the Sauer Golden Boar, it was lust at first sight. The seller was asking more than I wanted to pay, I procrastinated, and in the mean time it got sold. Well fast forward about 6 months and I saw that rifle online for sale.
I inquired and was told that the buyer brought it back due to a defect in the wood and that it had been sent back to Sauer for repairs. I told them that I would like to buy it when it came back.
Close to 18 months later I got a call and was told it was back, and that I should come take a look.
Although it had never been fired, it was a used gun and they made me a deal I could not refuse.

Never got a Pic. from my Late Brother in Law as the story was pre. cell phones but he told me that a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall was used as a fence post down in Texas near San Antonio where he was stationed in the Marine Corps some years ago.
Someone needed that fence fixed pretty bad to do that. Or maybe they caught a poacher, strung him up, and used his rifle to fix where he cut the fence.
1968 BDL in 7mm Remington Magnum. Just got it, taking it to my gunsmith (Kevin Weaver who is awesome) tomorrow to have the iron sights removed, my Leupold 3.5-10x50mm scope on, replacing the recoil pad with a Decelerator and adjusting the trigger to 2 3/4 lbs.

Nice one! I use to remove the sights on those. Now I kinda like leaving them on if the scope will clear. But then I’m not a big fan of 50mm objectives.

Thanks! I left the sights on my CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. The Leupold 1.5-5x scope is in Talley steel QR rings. There's times (few that they may be) when you want to use irons.

When I was a kid, my dad took me to buy a rifle with my own money. The night before, I had a dream of buying this exact rifle (minus the fugly pad). Even this exact cartridge. I have never made that dream come true, as the LGS did not have the rifle in stock. Ended up with a 700 MTN LSS 30-06.
Thanks. I mostly hunt in shotgun-only areas, so my time in the woods with rifles, other than .22s, is limited. I have to drive a couple hours west to get to rifle zones. But I have lots of good land near me.
