Many years ago, I bought a 308 Browning Safari, built on the small ring Mauser action, wearing the pencil barre. The rifle was cheap because it had been cut and padded an inch short and the barrel channel had been floated, from the looks of things, with a camp axe.

My intent was to use the action for a custom build. Then I shot it. First three @100, 5/8", first two touching. Let it cool. Second group, 1/2". All this with Federals cheapest load.

What did I do to the rifle? I sealed the ragged float job and bought a case of ammo. What about the short stock? I scouted the scope a little farther up. My daughters love the rifle and I find it handy, especially when heavy winter clothing is in order. Don't mess with excellence.
