the perfect rifle for whitetail deer seems to vary from place to place. Where I do most of my hunting, deep in a north Florida swamp, or along a forest stream, I don't get many shorts longer than 50 yards. The rifle that has done the best for me is a Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum. I have a Nikon African 1-4X scope on it, with a German #4 reticle.
For the past two years, I have supplemented the lever carbine with a Ruger Ranch bolt rifle in 7.62x39. This one might wind up replacing the Marlin for being just what I need.

A 44 mag long gun works well in mid TN too.
