Used to burn fuel in units of 100 lbs / hour, tons / hour, now it is liters / sec. They are just numbers in which to set a target and have a reference.
I do not know anyone using longhand to do math or figure anything out, as computing power is cheap and readily available.
There are certain people that always cling to the first bit of knowledge they get, and without question, that is their truth. It is how religion works.
These people have not realized the key to survival is adaptability.
