To understand why he was in Iraq, you have to know the Sunni / Shia divide.
Baghdad is surrounded with Shia. Iran is Shia. If he was a few hours north of Baghdad, he would have his head cut off gleefully. That is Sunni country. The same place ISIS had a footprint. Not as far north as the Kurds though.
Spent a lot of time there. It’s a long story, but one going on for centuries.
I sometimes wonder whether the Sunnis and Shias are Irish, or vice versa. The Irish kill each other over how to practice Christianity, and the Sunni and Shia do the same over how to practice Islam.
