Friend of mine that had done a lot of research on the topic made a suggestion to me when I started working up subsonic loads.
He specifically said use the fastest powder that you possibly can and get the explosion over and done with as quickly as possible for the greatest reduction in noise.
I have found that advice to be very helpful.
