That's happened to me. Last summer I took my brother in law out to see the bears and we were walking a closed (to vehicles) dirt road with a ditch to the left and a kane thicket to the right. About 100 yards in, up pops a big bear's head about 50 feet away. Couldn't see the body, but the head was big and broad with little beady eye. He was big boy, for sure.
