This isn't to say bad judgement elsewhere doesn't exist. Pard and I were asleep in a tent (on a trail beside a salmon stream) on the Noatak when I heard some splashing, that stopped short of our tent, paused a bit, then resumed on the upstream side. It had reached our tent, crossed the stream to go around, and recrossed to hit the trail.

I nudged my Lab awake- he sat up, sniffed once, barked "BEAR!" and flopped back down again.

Helluva bear-warning dog.
