I know that there are some folks in Texas and Oklahoma that remember Gibsons. It was Wal-Mart before there was a Wal-Mart. They had the best sporting goods department of anywhere and best of all they had guns. Lots of guns. I used to ride my bicycle there to but fishing lures. I would also gawk at all of the rifles they had. I have to say,I have fond memories of Gibsons. And I'm lucky that there is one of the two Gibsons in Kerville. The other one is in Weatherford. The first time I went there was a couple of years before mt Pop died. He was just like me when we went there. We looked at everything in the vast sporting goods department. I was ar Okie's home a few months ago and he remembers Gibsons like I do. And I had to rub it in a little bit. For y'all that remember... I give you GIBSONS.

Actually, I thought that chain had closed.. It started in Kansas I believe.
And yes, I remember them. My mom bought my first handgun for me when I was 18 there in 1979,. Stainless Ruger Single Six.
Walmart was down the street and even though Gibsons was an Older smaller store, it had a WAY better Sporting Goods dept. Lots of El Paso Weaver and Denver made Redfield Scopes And a few Trashcos thrown in the mix.
It's a damn shame they could not compete with Walmart on a grander scale..

I remember Gibsons very well in the 70s in MN.
They had guns, and that was cool.

There's still one in Weatherford, TX, (as you mentioned)that has lots of guns. Pretty neat store. Used to be one in Desoto when I was growing up. Fond memories of that place. The K-Mart ended up shutting them down, then the Wal-mart came to town a few years later.

Used to go to the one in independence, Kansas often growing up. Think it closed in the late 90s. Dad has shotgun shell boxes with gibsons price stickers on them from 80s I'd guess. Reloaded a few times.

I've been in the Gibson's in Kerville. It is an amazing collection of stuff. I'd love to replace the local Walmart superstore with a store like that Gibson's in Kerville!

Had one in Shawnee, OK. It was multi story and had the best toy department around, on floor 2.
Being a little tike at the time, that's all I cared about.

How is the gun selection in the Kerrville store? It's actually pretty good. They have probably 60 or 70 guns out on display. Maybe more if you count the hand guns. They have had more in the past couple of years though. They have powder, bullets, and dies. They have a big selection of scope mounts and rings but not very many scopes.

There was 1 in Santa Fe NM and the 1 in Las Vegas NM was only 200 yards from our house (the store was literally on the edge of town) I bought many dove shells there when I was 15, or so - and many, many more later.

They used to be in Arkansas. I still have a box or two left from a couple cases of shotgun shells I talked my mom into buying when the one in our town closed down.
The last one I saw and I think it is still open was/is in Lawton, Oklahoma. It was there in the late 90s and it all kinds of gun stuff. Like I said, I'm pretty sure it is still there.

Started my reloading career with a 20 gauge Texan loader and HiSkor 700 bought from Gibsons in ABQ. Still have the loader and it has been a bit over 40 years. Still have some shells loaded on it since I shoot FEW shotgun shells in a year.
Used to be some here in TN also, but LONG gone now

As a side note, Willie Robertson (yes, the Duck Dynasty one) married into the Howard (Brothers) family, who got their start in discount stores with a Gibson's franchise. I think the lawsuit Howards filed against Gibson's ended that relationship though.

There were two of them in Abilene where I grew up. I'd ride my bike their in Jr. High to buy .22 ammo, shotgun shells, and fishing tackle. My Aunt worked in the Toy Dept. for years, so I knew nearly every one that worked there on a first name basis. I can remember when I was in Grade School, they sold Military Surplus Rifles for like $25 bucks. They would display them in one of those old round aluminum trash cans & you could take your pick.
Best Sporting Goods Dept. ever!!! They had every color fishing lure ever made by every manufacturer. And tons of guns & archery stuff. I bought two new handguns there when they were going out of business in 1980. A new Ruger 45 Blackhawk on Closeout for $150 & a S&W Model 34 Kit Gun in .22 LR for only $225 bucks! Those were the days! Wish the original Gibson Stores were still around.

I loved Gibsons as a kid. Fresh hot popcorn, a big icee, and checking out all the guns with my dad. Good memories!! As soon as I read the post that started this thread, I remembered the smell of the popcorn that would hit me when walking into the Gibsons store where I grew up. I didn't remember the Icees until I saw the post I quoted above, but our town's store had the Icees too. As others have mentioned, there were Gibsons stores in Arkansas in the 1970's, and my father still has some ammo he bought at Gibsons back in the day.

Interesting Gibson's memory.
When I bought my Leica scope a couple of years ago, Camera Land had a trade in program to discount it. I sent two to make sure they had a usable scope for the kids. One of those two was a Gibson's fine plex in either 4 or 6 power. I had owned it since I was a kid in the 70's but it had been in a box for twenty years.

Marlin 39A for $99 in the '70s back in Iowa. Wish I had bought a few, or at least one of them instead of the Rem .22 auto I bought instead.

Still have a box of Norma 6,5x55 bought in 1986 at the Brunswick GA Gibson store. $18 and change... thought the wife was gonna kill me as that was some high priced ammo back then. We had bought Norma ammo from them in the late sixtys for the old Mausers they sold there. That was some cheap ammo, just a couple of bucks a box. Gave me the impression at the time that Norma was some cheap assed third world ammo in the wood grained box. Memories, good old memories.. but damn, I can't remember what happened yesterday

There was a Gibson's in Boonville, Missouri in the early 70's. I was too young to remember if there was a gun counter but I still have a steel toy semi truck that came from that store when I was 6 or 7 years old.

There was one in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and it also had a great guns and sporting goods department. I can remember buying cases of Federal Field Load shotgun shells there for $50 out the door. And that was when a case was 20 boxes, not 10 as today. We've got a couple of Ithaca/SKB shotguns we bought at Gibson's. I used to drool over the Ithaca LSA-55 and LSA-65 bolt action rifles in there. I've got a can of Herco powder on my shelf now that came from there.

Been to the one in Kerrville a few times as it is not far from home. Caught an outdoor clearance sale on one trip and bought a fair bit of fishing stuff. Neat store.

There used to be a Gibsons in Billings. That's where I bought a Chinese SKS for $65 and 500 rounds of ammo for $50 about 15 years ago. My son shot that thing a lot, and I just sold it a year ago for $350. Wish I had the ammo still!

I bought all my early reloading tools from Gibson's in Sidney MT, back in the 1970s. Lee Loaders, RCBS 505 scale, manuals, powder, bullets, primers. They carried it all.

There was a Gibson's in Boonville, Missouri in the early 70's. I was too young to remember if there was a gun counter but I still have a steel toy semi truck that came from that store when I was 6 or 7 years old. I had one of those, too! Sometime back in the early '60s, is when I got it. Dang thing never wore out, either, until Dad ran over it with the tractor or something. I grew up north of Booneville a bit, in Chariton County.

There was one in Lampasas Texas
Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

I had no idea that Gibson's was in so many places and had so many stores. I'm glad that there's one fairly close to me though. It's always busy and I don't mind paying a tad more for reloading components when I shop there.

I have purchased lots of fishing gear and ammo from Gibsons at their location in East Dallas years ago. I bought my first full case (several of them) of shot shells from the Gibsons located in Seven Points Texas, close to Cedar Creek Lake. I miss Gibsons a lot, and have been explaining to my wife that we will find if there is another and shop there when we find another. Kerrville and Weatherford may be half and half in the travel circle since we live in Waxahachie Texas. We will make every effort to visit one or the other soon. Thanks for the heads up. Joel

Hey Bart, I remember them. Good description of them as a WalMart before WalMart. My hometown in SE Texas had one. The last one I saw still open was in Okmulgee, OK, I think it changed hands some time in the 90's. I used to stare at the long guns, and learned there was such a thing as reloading your own ammo..

Used to be one in Desoto when I was growing up. That's the store that I rode my bike to. I grew up in DeSoto? It's nothing like it was when I grew up there. No kidding. Grew up in Lancaster and Desoto in the 70s and 80s. Makes me sad to even go back there, now. I lived in Red Oak above a Truck Stop while I was working for the Katy down there. I used to eat at a couple of places in Lancaster. There was some place downtown and then all of us used to eat at the Waffle House there at the motel on I-35 after we got done partying at the Club. I almost got shot at the Club and one of my friends got knifed.

It's always busy and I don't mind paying a tad more for reloading components when I shop there. I can remember at least three right around here. Yates Center, Iola and Independence, Kansas all had them. I'm sure they were in lots of these other towns too but I can't recall off the top of my head. The one in Independence closed about 1998, I'd say. The ones around here were in between one of the old, small Walmart's and a Dollar General in size.

I worked at Gibsons in Big Spring, Tx back in high school. Several years of the soft goods dept. before I moved up to Automotive and then Sporting Goods. Later on I worked at the Gibsons in Bryan, Tx before it closed in about 1976.
I still have the MEC 600 Jr shotshell reloader Dad bought there in 1968. Cranked out 1000 shells just a few weeks ago!

Had one on 6th street (Highway 50) in Emporia Kansas when I was growing up. Bought 2 boxes of 22-250 there for the Rem 700 ADL I bought at OTASCO (Oklahoma Tire and Supply Co.). Still have the ammo boxes with the price tags, but sold the rifle many years ago.
Anyone remember OTASCO?

We had one in Casper WY. It is the smith grocery store now. We had one in Rawlins, WY, too.

I believe Herb Gibson Jr is still in the Dallas area. He has donated to several charities and I believe the sports center at Dallas Christian School is named for him. Herb was a very serious Rimfire BR shooter. I bought my first rimfire BR rifle from him as well as 2 bricks of Eley Tenex. He and his buddy Grant Pickard were able to fly to the matches in Herb's plane. Herb told me that is was easier to lease all of their buildings, rather running the huge operation that was Gibson's Discount Stores and Gibson's Trade Shows. Herb was always a very personable man.

Anyone remember OTASCO? Yes. There was an OTASCO in town before there was a Gibson's.(mid '60s) The Gibson's didn't carry firearms or ammo for several years.

Still go in the Gibson's in Weatherford about once a month to check what powder they have in stock. Little bit of everything in that store. Owners are in their late 70's. All of their kids work in the store. Hope it keeps on going. Gibson's owners are a prime example of not seeing the future in the market place. Walmart/k-mart killed them with more modern thinking.
Same as Burgerchef hamburger place. McDonalds killed them plus tough franchise rules.

We had a Gibson's in Brady, Texas. I was still fairly young when Wally World opened, and Gibson's closed within a year or two afterwards.

If you read a little history, Sam Walton's original business model was Herb Gibson Sr. They were acquaintances and friends in the early days. He divested his interest in Gibson's Discount Stores in 1972. His 2 sons took it over. They divested their interest in Gibsons, but retained the properties that they owned. Senior retained Gibson's Trade Shows. I believe this was the wholesale warehouse the franchise stores bought from. Herb Sr. passed away in 1986 at 85yrs of age.

It's strange that you say that because there isn't one single negative comment about Gibson's here. And that's strange considering some of the know-it-all fools that post here. I go to Kerville about three times a month and Gibson's is always busy. I've been there around closing time a couple of times and they always have to run folks out of there. I guess my point is that sometimes what's old,is new again.

We had a Pamida-Gibsons in Carlinville, IL in the late '70s to very early '80s. I bought my 870 there and bought a Rem 700 in .243 as a wedding gift for my first wife.
I tried to get that back from her when we divorced. I said I bought it for my wife and if she didn't want to be my wife I should give it to my next wife. She didn't buy that but at least she admitted it was my scope on it and gave that back to me. Mighty white of her.
If you dug through my basement I think you'd still find shotshells and .22 ammo with their price tags. I've been hoarding since before it was cool!
I bought a bunch of fishing gear there too but I'd never be able to identify it nwo - not much into fishing.

I'm amazed they can have so much stuff in something that is less than 1/4th the size of a Wal-Mart.

Had one in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Spent many hours and dollars there buying fishing and hunting stuff. They had the best prices on ammo around those parts.

My first thought was that I always chose an olive over a pearl onion; then I read the post.
There used to be one over in Tama/Toledo. We always called it "The Hoot Store". It later became a Pamida and is now a ShopKo. When it was Gibsons, I bought a Colt Scout .22 Convertible from them. Got it home and there was no way on Earth that the magnum cylinder would fit. Took it back and they sent it back to Colt. Colt was having some sort of dispute with its workforce at the time and I got it back nine months later, with no word of apology. Didn't hold it against Gibsons, but I certainly have held it against Colt.

Glad we have the one up here. When I moved out here was real surprised to see it in Weatherford. Took a long time to get my wife out of that store the first time we went. Reminds me of the one out in West Texas I used to go to. I do hope that the current owners kids out here in Weatherford keep it going. I always see this older couple wondering around the store. Didn't know who they were. My wife was in the toy area and this older lady comes up asked if she could help her. Turns out that was one of the owners. Took an hour to get them apart so we could go home. Had to do with a tea set for the grandkid girls.

Gibsons and Woolworth, great stores back in the day. There's some memories. My first real job was a cleaning boy at Woolworth's for $1.25/hr. And when I was a kid I collected baseball cards. Had to buy them from the penny gum machine. Will never forget the first time in Gibson's in Clute, Texas that I saw cards packed in plastic packages. You could buy about 30 at a time. Got a Willie Mays in that first package after having given up on ever getting on of those.

I understand and agree with you. Another thing is that I think that what the Kerville Gibson's is doing something right. They are always busy and I'm happy to pay just a little more so that they will be there for a long time.

IMO Gibson's was already on the way out as Walmart was coming in. K Mart, TG&Y Family Centers, Alco, Woolco...they spelled the death knell of Woolworth's, TG&Y drugstores, Kresge...places like that. Gibson's was kinda in between a drug store/hardware store and the huge discount centers of today. Walmart like, took the concept of those big discount centers and maximized it. Gibson's was never really in Walmart's league as to the size of the store and the variety of the merchandise. I liked Gibson's, but that's my opinion.
I don't really know why they went under though. When it comes down to it, nowadays Dollar General's exist right in the shadow of Walmart's. Gibson's had a bit wider variety than Dollar General, but the concepts are very similar. I guess that the average Walmart has gotten bigger to the point that a smaller store can get the bleed-off.
When I roll up to a Walmart, you can never just park right near the entrance and go in. It's a mile to the door and then another mile back just to grab some pop. Then a big line to get out. Lots of times you can park right near the Dollar General entrance and get in and out with little hassle.
Gibson's were great stores. I miss the ones around here. I don't hate Walmart, but it's good for them to have some competition.

In Oklahoma we had a lot of Gibson's in 60' and early 70's - Got married in 67 and went to college in Weatherford, OK - got started into reloading with supplies from Gibson's - but it also reminds me of the rummage store across the street that I went into browsing around and low an behold there was a as new 1911(probably from the Burnsflat air base) laying there for $35. I didn't have the money as rent was $35 a month - sure have regretted missing that one. Sure enjoyed buying items at the Okmulgee store when they were closing it down.

I bought my first bow at the Gibson's in Laurel, MS, somewhere around 1983. I didn't know they were still around. The store buildings in Laurel and Hattiesburg are still there, they've been remodeled into something else.

I was stationed in Sherman, Texas from 1966-1970 in the Air Force & being a starving, married GI I went to work part time at Gibsons, worked there the whole 4 years I was in the service. I was only 21 years old & working in the gun department & learned a lot from those old Texas boys, at first they gave me a lot of grief because I thought I already knew everything (21 years old) but there were some sharp old roosters in Grayson county! One retired sergant major, Moss Cosper kind of took me under his wing & taught me a great deal about guns, reloading, shooting & hunting bullfrogs with a 30/06 (another story) Gibsons was a really neat place & the prices were always the lowest of any sporting goods store. One year we got in 80 of the Marlin 39A 22s, the price was $48 each, yes I bought one. Primers were 67 cents, almost all the bullets were $2.67 per hundred. Great memories of my years working for them, wish they were still there. I also remember Dub Carney of Whitesboro, Texas, he took me fishing, frog gigging, I usually used my recurve bow & deer hunting on his lease at Brownwood, Texas, great times & many fond memories of Gibsons & Texas, later we had 2 kids born there.

At the time that I was at Southwest Oklahoma State it was one of the top Pharmacy schools in the country and for that time a lot of foreign students in the program. I majored in Math and minored in Chemistry - had a lot of classes with the Pharmacy students and friends with many. At the time it was around 6,000 students and I can't believe how cheap that I got thru college back then compared with what it cost today. I finished high school in Hobart, OK and my mom worked at the Gibsons gas station to get her social security payments in.

buoght my first new handgun there. Didn't know you had to be 21. Sporting goods manager got another "older" guy to buy it for me. They'd lock you up and throw away the key now for that..

Was thinking there was still one in Kerrville last time I was through.
You confirmed that. Nice to know, they had about anything a person could look for.
Bought a 22-250 and Python when the local one closed.. Cheap. Wish I'd have bought more.

Loved Gibsons! Used to go there to buy fishing tackle with my grandfather. Course, I always headed straight for the guns!

Gibson's owners are a prime example of not seeing the future in the market place. Walmart/k-mart killed them with more modern thinking. Been in that Gibson's at least a dozen times,it is always busy as far as I have seen.

We've got family that has a ranch south of Kerrville. I have to make a stop at Gibson's every time we go through, usually a couple of times a year. I used to joke with my wife that if Gibson's didn't have it, I probably didn't need it. They carry everything it seems like.

She was first an engineer, an Occ. therapist, and a PT later. My Son said it was his turn. He had a masters in Physical Therapy and that for 25 years. They moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia and he got his law degree at Regent University. He wanted to go to a conservative Christian school. They have been in Fayetteville,Ark. the last 2 years.

I grew up in Van Horn, Tx. and we use to drive 88 miles to the Gibson's in Pecos, Tx. In the 6th grade I began working at Vincent Drug everyday after school from 4-6PM and Saturdays from 9AM to 12 Noon. Use to take home a little over $11.00/week. When I saved up enough money my grandfather drove us to Gibson's where I(He) purchased a Winchester Model 94 30-30 for $79.00 Great store, beagan reloading with a Lee Loader purchased in that store for my 30-30.

We had one in Ogden, UT - I remember it was the place to go... Closed in about 1985.
James Pepper: There's no law west of Dodge and no God west of the Pecos. Right, Mr. Chisum? John Chisum: Wrong, Mr. Pepper. Because no matter where people go, sooner or later there's the law. And sooner or later they find God's already been there.
