I'd say that, by in large, in so many small ways and so many big ways, the Nazi's were absolutely on the wrong tack.

Hindsight is 20-20, but there is so much there that could have gone right for that country after WWI and the Nazi's made it go bad.

At the top of the list is the National Socialist way of running an economy. Yes, it worked well enough to get them in the thick of WWII. However, the idea that all large factory orders had to be run through a hierarchy of central oversight boards made it highly inefficient. Up against a modern capitalist economy, like the US, it was doomed.

The biggest blunder of WWII was the planning and execution of Barbarossa. Hitler asked for a plan for the invasion of Russia. The generals gave it to Hitler. Hitler said he thought the logistics were overblown and sent it back. The generals went ahead and knocked everything down by 2/3. Hitler gave his approval. The plan went ahead and sputtered and fell apart at the gates of Moscow and Stanlingrad. Why? Because Germany went into Russia with only 1/3 of what was needed.

The other big blunder was spending so much valuable resources on extermination. Nevermind the fact that Germany lost so many of its great minds, and also gassed countless doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and engineers needlessly. When Germany should have been trying to defend itself in 44 and 45, it spent its treasure gassing Jews.

I could run down a list all day. About the only thing they really got right were the cool uniforms-- second only to the Italians. Of course, look at the Italians and you'll see what an emphasis on fashion will get you.

Look, I'm 3rd gen German American. We had family on the wrong side of things. Granted, the Nazi's did the world a favor by knocking Communism down a peg or two, but at what cost? What bloody cost?

German Exceptionalism was a wonderful ethos at one time. Germans believed they were exceptional and that they had a powerful onus to go out in the world and make it a better place. Guys like Albert Schweitzer were the epitome of this thinking. Here in the States, you can thank the Turners for the concept of Physical Education and Gymnastics. Germans were also responsible for introducing public hygiene, and sanitary hospitals to the US. If it wasn't for Germans, our cities would still be open sewers, and we'd all be dying young of wretched easily preventable diseases. That was the German's gift to humanity.

Then WWI comes around and in its aftermath, some psychotic bastards take that wonderful ideal and turn it into Aryan Superiority. Instead of the ever-vigilant Shepards of the world, Germany was turned into a race of butchers and the world became its abattoir.

To give you and idea what German Exceptionalism was all about, let me digress a bit. When I was in college, I stumbled upon a stone monument to "Turnvater" in the neighborhood park. It was overgrown with yew bushes. I had no idea of what it was or how it got there. About a decade ago, I found out the real meaning of it.

Turnvater (Father of Turners) was the nickname given to Francis Ludwig Jahn, the founder of modern Gymnastics. All the gymnastics equipment we know today (bars, rings, vaulting horse, etc) come from Jahn. The park was built in the early 1900's out of an abandoned quarry/landfill. One of its most unique features is a dance pavillion looking out on the steepest stretch of Vine Street. Its reason for being was that this was the reviewing stand for the gymnastics pagents. As many as 11,000 German American gymnasts would do cartwheels up this hill in parade, showing off to the world what could be done with a healthy body. It was all gone by the end of WWI.

I've been in cold as low as -67 F confirmed by a local AWOS and everything in between. Once you get down past -40 F you can't really feel a difference in the colder temperatures. After a week or so of those temperatures -20 F feels downright balmy.

You skipped a step. First establish what it is that they did. What we understand as the history of that period of time is a mere mixture of war time propaganda and what actually occurred. We don't know the proportion of those two factors. But governments generally bring about evil, since men are in control of them. This is why our Founders attempted to create a government with few and defined powers, filled with checks and balances to cripple its ability to accomplish evil. Just about all of those checks and balances have been torn down, and have been for a very long time, sadly. The National Socialist government didn't have many checks and balances to begin with, so it was bound to bring about evil ends. But they were not alone in bringing about evil during that time in human history. We were responsible for a huge share, as were the British and the Soviets, not to mention the Japanese and Italians. There was plenty of evil to go around.

I'm not Jewish. I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood. Many of my neighbors had tattoos from the Nazi's. Despite this, they were kind people for whom I have a lot of respect and admiration. I am not an expert on American/Israeli affairs. I can't and won't comment on that.

However, Cincinnati has a large prosperous Jewish population. Cincinnati was a magnet for Germans, Jewish as well as Catholic and Protestant. I live in a suburb of Cincinnati that has a large enough Jewish population that the schools close for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. My family chose to live here, and have chosen to live close to Jews for hundreds of years. We find them to be good neighbors, good businessmen, and good professionals. They have enhanced our lives for generations.

I won't give you stories. For whatever reason, it would seem the attention span of a lot of you seems attenuated today. However, I will say that once you have done a good turn for Jews and shown them respect, they almost uniformly return it with loyalty. I prospered in my career the most when working for Jews, and when my life was at its darkest it was Jews who helped me the most. They are above all things fair. They remember kindness. They honor God.

My experiences vary. Grew up in Miami Beach and Coral Gables. There were a few jews enrolled in my Catholic School in Miami Beach because the education was better. There was no scheme to rule the world. Any reasonably rigorous examination of German sources would make that quite plain. As a soldier, was stationed in Augsburg, 1972-73, and learned a lot about the German people. One was that there was a gigantic difference between a German and a German Nazi. I'm not real sure about which side the Jews as an entire group are on today, but I second and endorse the comments about Jewish girls and tits. The nicest ones I've ever seen belonged to a cute young thing that had an apartment next door to mine my sophomore year in college. He tried to get me fired. he failed and shortly after he was recalled to the homeland.

I did know a few Jewish girls. One was in Junior High. She introduced me to her parents. After summer vacation I learned they transferred her to a boarding school to keep her away from me. Another was in High School. She was so short that when we danced, if I got aroused, which I usually did she could rest her head in you know what. I heard she married some 6'6" dude. That would have been fun to watch. The last was one very fine looking woman, about 19 when I met her. We date for a short while and one night she asked me if I would still be her friend if she became a prostitute. WTF? I just said a friend is a friend but think real hard about what you just said. Well she turned high dollar hooker turning $1,000 a night tricks. Never could talk her into giving a friend a freebie. Heard she ended up marrying some very rich dude. The year was 1967 when she asked me that question.

The only other experience with those people has been with lawyers and they've screwed me every time.

A few years ago I sold a few pieces of equipment that is normally used to grind asphalt and I introduced this to the people that maintain and build ice roads. They grind freshwater lake ice into 1 1/4 minus ice gravel for roads and drilling pads. Carl is hauling that ground-up ice.

They build roads and drill pads over the very fragile tundra. The lakes are just like rock pits as a source for the ice. Summer comes, don't even know they were there. Really something to see. Thanks guys, Travis' joojoo ice road thread is a great relief tonight. Just starting to get some connectivity. Have managed just fine without news but missed the 'Fire.

What we're doing is harvesting ice by grinding off layers from the edges, the area that is grounded, frozen to the bottom, and water from the lakes deeper unfrozen area and building roads withtthat material. There's other ice road types... The goal is to move stuff in and out and leave it undisturbed next summer. There is more to it but that's it for now.

The other night was a pretty good show.... Have seen a little purple, yellow, red, with the green but missed the photo op.

Here's an action shot. First existing snow and hauled in snow along with lots of water is applied and compacted to encapsulate the tundra. Then the ice chips and lots more water is used to make a road surface. We're in much rougher terrain than one may see elsewhere.. Not much snow here, just a few inches. Can't show the equipment... Road needs to support 1.6 million pounds at 32 feet wide without doubt for oil rigs.

Arctic fox. Cute little chits begging for a 17hmr but of course we can't. They say 90? percent of the red and Arctic fox carry rabies. No bs, feed them and fly home... Our work area is flown with FLIRs to clear for polar bears before we can work. Far enough from the coast here, the bears are out on the sea ice now, which does still exist... But supposedly during big blows some end up inland. They do munch on people, so I don't need them.
