I wouldn't shoot elk much past about 300-350 yards with a .338 Fed -- but then I wouldn't shoot at them past that range with any cartridge, unless they're already wounded. I suspect if you talk with Federal factory people (hint...I have, including the one who developed the cartridge for them) you will find they have no sense you should limit using the .338 Federal to under 150 yards.
