In his book "The Ice Man", Richard Kuklinski used a .38 derringer, not for self-defense but for murder. Kuklinski was 6'6" and he would palm the gun and walk up to his intended victim, apparently unarmed, and put two quick shots into his chest -- if he was telling the truth, which is questionable.
