The Mauser 98 is the BEST action for a rough-use hunting rifle. Having said this, it's important to point out that most changes detract from its utility. Altered bolt handles are mandatory, of course, as are safeties but everything else should be left alone to assure reliability. The original trigger can be tuned to provide a reasonably crisp 3 pound pull while retaining the two stages which make the trigger so safe and reliable.
I have some Mausers with aftermarket triggers (Timney, Sako, and Dayton-Traister) but my serious hunter, a 35 Whelen, still has the original trigger. It pulls 3 pounds and is as close to infallible as a trigger can be. If I hadf to get rid of all but one hunting rifle, this is the one I would keep. GD
