You might find there are many people who lean to the right, yet support gun control because of a perception of public safety rather than political ideology. That is what happened in Australia. It wasn't the left that brought in laws banning semi autos.
Semi autos are still available under a special category, but you need to show reason....a farmer who needs a semi auto for pest control for example.
