The really key event in the timeline for the "last days" is the peace treaty between Israel and the Arabs. Trump was closer than any president has even been in getting that done. It would seem when that peace treaty is signed, and it will be, that marks the beginning of the 7 years of tribulation. It will be a false peace though, it is written that it will be. Halfway through the tribulation is when the Jewish temple comes into play in a major way. The anti-christ will claim he is god in the temple and defile it. So with that in mind the Temple will be rebuilt.
The Jews aren't trying to rebuild the Temple because of any of this. They want to return to their Old Testament worship and that will include animal sacrifices. After the Temple is defiled though many will have their eyes opened to who Jesus really is and they will turn to Him.
Some say the Dome of the Rock is not on the original Temple Mound. If that's true one major obstacle is out of the way.
