There are a lot of different opinions on caliber here and I have not read them all, but to me how the rifle handles would be more important than the calibers mentioned since all will do the job.
For my close range hunting I have used the 30-30 and a couple 35's. This year I switched to a Winchester FW in 7x57. The range was ~ 35 yards using Privi Partisan 139g factory loads. The whole going out was 1/2 dollar sized. I do like 2 holes since the deer can run and hide in the thick stuff making them difficult to find. Especially this year since there was no snow.
