Too many layers and one becomes the little brother on a Christmas Story! I buy the best I can afford. For years it was all wool. Now that I have tried some light weight modern gear, I wear both. Here good rain gear is important. I have cold feet now days, so insulated boots or packs are necessary, for my old feet. Don't take anything away from, U.S. Army cold weather gear, it works! Don't forget a big brimmed hat for rain and snow.
