My wife uses a 243 in a Winchester Model 70 Ultra light. No deer can escape her she is deadly and much more blood thirsty than I am. Well until I made her start dressing them now she is more selective. The 243 is popular for deer but I don't think most hunters that don't use it know how deadly it is on deer. With a good expanding bullet they are DRT. I use a 240 Weatherby from time to time but I am not sure it is anymore effective on deer size game.
