I see plenty of obese people every day. I also see far more very fit people than I did in the '70s and '80s. Most of the young people and their parents w/ whom I interact are very health conscious and participate in strenuous activities. Endurance events like the Western States and Hardrock 100 mile mountain trail runs have 1000s more applicants than places available and are filled via lottery open only to those who have finished qualifier events. Backpack hunters that go very hard are all over You Tube and fitness and nutrition are discussed vigorously as part of the whole experience.

The good old campfire has plenty of folks that hunt from stands and are more into lard and cast iron cooking than fitness. When I started boot camp in 1966 few could do 20 pushups or run 2 miles. If your idea of societal norms is formed at Walmart a trip to a mountain town or a surf beach may alter your thinking...or not.
