Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is traditional Spanish, they’ve been hyphenating forever.

To the best of my understanding under English law the wife and all her property became the possession of the husband, hence her taking his last name. Under Spanish law it was more of a partnership, the wife retaining ownership of her own property, hence the hyphenation.
