Nice people.
But damn near worthless outside of their chosen area of expertise........and very narrow application within.
Read: no better than other foreign engineers.
Can only hide behind that cultural misfit/didn't understand crap for so long.

Lived in China for a couple years. While I worked there, my boys went to school there.
What you were seeing was the result of the education system. A system designed to output interchangeable worker units. Take two graduates from the same university, in the same engineering concentration. They will think identically, as they have been programmed identically. Out of the box what?
This is a huge reason why wealthy Chinese are sending their children overseas for education. They realize the shortcomings of their own system.
As to not challenging the totalitarian regime? Well it's also kind of bright to keep a low profile, when for literally thousands of years, to speak truth to power in China was a good way of not passing on your genetic material. Plenty of people still alive that survived the Cultural Revolution, and are telling their children and grandchildren to not rock the boat...
