Prob'ly someone who has actually worked in China will chime in.
I've had one in my house as an exchange student for a year, brung him and his buddies out to New Mexico, interacted frequently with Chinese Academics at Universities here, taught Chinese kids (Taiwanese), been around Chinese kids at international competitions, see Mainland Chinese all the time at the Alamo (some of 'em mere hours in-country, never been out of China before, speak absolutely flawless English).
"Brainwashed" means just that, don't mean you ain't bright.
Most of our Founding Fathers thought chattel slavery was acceptable, don't mean they weren't bright.
