I made a Rem Model 7 .308 into a 35 Rem by removing the barrel and replacing it with a Rem Model 700 .223 barrel that JES rebored and rechambered to 35 Rem. Total cost was less than $850. It shoots exceptionally well and balances nicely. I wish mine had one of those nicely textured stocks!
