They don't have to worry about the primary home freezing up while they are gone.
A good friend lived in Montana for all of his life until retirement and then he started making the yearly trek south, after a few years he decided that it was easier to go north in the summer and not have to worry about things like freezing pipes, etc than it was to go south and spend the months there worrying about what could go wrong while he was away from Montana. Not a bad logic, but he does not refer to himself as a Montana resident any longer though.
