The reason is the owner,Rick,isn't a heavy handed guy. We've done fairly well flushing the turds in the past and eventually the trolls/a-holes pick up their toys and go home. As for that one guy that is such a pain in the butt... He'll get what's coming to him and get banned eventually. Those typs get bolder and bolder, cross a line that shouldn't be crossed and then will be gone. It's happened before and will happen again. You should start dogging the a-hole... Nothing worse than a Noob following you around, calling BS after every post. It would be great to see that happen.
If someone want to troll the main Fire, that's one thing. They individual 603's referring to is trolling the reloading and shooting threads, i.e. the places where members usually try to be helpful and supporting of other members and our sport. It looks like he's been getting away with it for over 30k posts, so I don't think this situation will self correct anytime soon.
I wonder if the people that spout off so rudely would do so face to face. All the write ups about CF gatherings speak of how friendly, polite, accepting, gentlemanly and open everyone is. Maybe they don't attend. I am also a little surprised as it seems that the age of the members here seem a little older than other boards I frequent. The comments about the youth of our country going to chit is no surprise if any of the really negative people here have raised kids.
I didn't say I was leaving, but I don't come here as often as I go to a few others. The forums can be interesting at times. Good info on reloading is always welcome, or what everyone's favorite bullet is. And you have the Savage lovers and the Glock lovers and the high end glass guys. It's all interesting and I enjoy offering what I've learned and what I know (and sometimes what I THINK I know) from 50 ish years of hunting and shooting. And...on some of the forums the most knowledgable people can be borderline jerks, but they have good info, so we overlook any social deficiencies they might display from time to time.
But here...you have many knowledgable people with info to share and you also have a few guys that seem to have only a desire to argue and disrupt. I'm not a shrink, nor am I in charge of the forum, but if a person has nothing to offer but insults and vitriol, why are they here? Or better said, why are they allowed to be here? I can't help but think they've been banished from other forums, and have only this place left to share their unhappiness and make their cry for attention.
Compared to most other forums the campfire is basically un moderated. You have to really work at getting kicked off here. Don't say anything stupid and you won't have any problems. Been here 7+ years and as far as I know I haven't had any conflicts with anyone. Certainly nothing from my end. I have on one on ignore and as far as I know, no one is ignoring me. That does not mean there is complete agreement all the time.
One thing I've learned is that some of the most outspoken guys who come across as real A-holes actually have a lot of knowledge. If you can get past their attitude, a lot can be learned from. Others, not so much.

I think that smarquez said it pretty well, in that the bothersome ones can't act like that in public - they'd be shunned. But here they can be more than the sum of their actual parts. I'd guess that they aren't married (who'd tolerate them) and never were successful in team sports (again, who'd tolerate them). That would lead to a big feeling of inadequacy, hence the cry for attention.

We have a bunch like that. It comes with the territory here. On the up side, though, since the moderator doesn't exercise much power in that regard, you don't find the corruptions of power typical at most discussion forums.
I do not know Rick personally but from his actions and his posts on here I can assume he is a true believer in the Constitution and he practices what he believes in.
I have found that many folks here believe in the "practice what you preach" principle, I like those folks, the others not so much.
I imagine the guy actually has some valuable knowledge to share if he chose to write complete sentences and treat members with a little respect.
I got here in 2003 as Bart185 and he was a big part of the Campfire then. The things he's done with Remington rifles amazed me enough to do some of the things he did and I got results. His pics of his family,dead critters,and Alaska were amazing. Y'all only know what he lets you know now. Back then,he was different. I think that the advice that he gave the most was "Break Bones". He was the first guy I ever saw that could make the original Barnes X-Bullets shoot clover leaf groups.

To a noobie, he comes across as a few bricks shy of a load, and completely useless. Why would a supposedly intelligent person play the fool? I've never met him, and don't hope to. I suspect that he's not a happy person.
This really is, in some ways, a very interesting forum. Some of the other forums seem dominated by a person or a group, though this one isn't. The good news is that the 'dominating' people on the other forums I frequent are at least very knowledgable, if tiresome. There's a lot of knowledge here also, though more than a good share of tiresome from a few. They've been tolerated this far, so why not tolerate them a while longer..I suppose.
And you say that this Big Stick person is an older guy. Also interesting, in that he acts quite childish. Could it be that he's old enough to be approaching the 'use by' date.

He was. Part of the reason, I think, was the sheer number of people that wanted to call BS on every post that he replied to or started. Lots tried to one up him, and failed because they did not have the experience that he has. That did not keep them from trying so he got to giving smart azz replies. That soon got to be a habit that he enjoyed. Then there were some personal issues. At least that is my take. I would not hesitate to ask his advice and would listen real close. miles

This is just a guess but I know life has delt him a tough hand. I think that had a lot to do with the change. The deatails are not mine to give.
He knows firearms and hunting but it seems he had lost the desire to share. His choice. Hr does not bother me. If he bothers you follow my instructions on how to ignore someone.
I have picked up good information from Stick. I can also understand where he is coming from. If he decided that I would be a good target for his sarcasm, I would just let it roll off, taking the info he dishes. Free speech basically. It is true that some use such tactics because they can't formulate a real argument or rebuttal. Or some just act in a childish manner whenever someone disagrees with them.
More important is when someone makes unacceptable allusions to violence or other reprehensible behaviours, but I blame more those who remain silent in the face of such things, then I do the weakling who barks in the internet where they don't have to be accountable to anything.
Well, I just had to ask about that small group of folks. I have a better understanding now. And if Big Stick wants to share his knowledge again, maybe we'll all be the better for it.

The hands off approach can be tiresome, but it always separates the wheat from the chafe. Never had a problem with Stick or Bricktop, but each know WTF they talking about. I suppose people come here for different reasons. If your here to simply bullchit and tell tall tales, Stick ain't your guy. Sometimes though, you are looking for someone who can give you a definitive answer to a question you need answered.
On several occasions I've been in a situation where I needed real answer and not a guess. Several times Crossfire has been the guy who could provide that answer on certain equipment repairs,and I knew I could take that info to the bank. On several other occasions, it been Stick would gave me answers in regards to shooting/loading and I knew that information was no guess. That,to me, is quite valuable.
I've PM'ed Stick on several occasions for certain load info,bullet choice,etc, and in every case he has been very helpful and saved me time,money and frustration. Too many times on forums like these you ask a question and get answers from fanboys who advocate their favorite product, but have no real reason for doing so. To me, that is extremely frustrating. However, if a guy like Stick says "use product A", I know that there is a good reason for it. He's never insulted me that I know of, but I wouldn't even care if he did, so long as he also included the information I was looking for. I don't mind being insulted, so long as its done well!

It's interesting that you say that, 4th. Since I started this chat, and since Big Stick has been defended by a few folks, I took more interest in seeing what he'd had to offer on other subjects. And yes, he seems to know quite a bit, and offers up more than just insults, though he obviously enjoys belittling people more than helping them.
It isn't that I can't handle the muck being spread. It's more that I had to ask why the moderator allows it. It brings nothing positive to this forum, and brings (at times) a good bit of negative. Earlier I had said that nobody dominates this forum. I was wrong. It's Big Stick. Losing him from this forum would most likely be more positive than negative. It's not my call, but if it was, and if he couldn't be civil, I'd bounce him out of here.

There's nothing 'manly' about bein' a prick...regardless of how much knowledge one has about hunting, shooting, reloading, etc.. There always will be greater and lesser persons than each of us. Some have much more knowledge and experience than many of us when it comes to the things that we all have a common interest in (hunting and shooting and such)...while others have less knowledge and experience than many of us regarding the same things. Those who have more knowledge and experienced shouldn't be revered...and those who have less knowledge and experience shouldn't be looked down on. Much of the interaction here between men would not happen in a hunting camp, for a variety of reasons. Birdwatcher posted this in another thread within the last day or two, "...on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." What he posted was appropriate regarding the issue at hand on that thread...and it's appropriate here as well. There is a ton of knowledge and experience among the members on this board regarding shooting, hunting, reloading, gun smithing, knife making...and just about anything else. It's nice to be able to access that knowledge and experience. And it'd be even nicer to be able to do so without so much of the extraneous BS (insults and such) that are pretty common here...that are not common in hunting camps or in the field. With our common interests, you'd think there'd be more camaderie and less discord here...like there is in hunting camps and in the field.

No one who posts here is required to. Everyone who frequents the place does so voluntarily, some to exchange information, some for entertainment, and some to just BS.

Talking with other men, who all share the same interests (hunting, shooting, outdoors, etc.) in a 'decent' manner isn't "pussification". There's nothing 'manly' about bein' a prick...regardless of how much knowledge one has about hunting, shooting, reloading, etc.. There always will be greater and lesser persons than each of us. Some have much more knowledge and experience than many of us when it comes to the things that we all have a common interest in (hunting and shooting and such)...while others have less knowledge and experience than many of us regarding the same things. Those who have more knowledge and experienced shouldn't be revered...and those who have less knowledge and experience shouldn't be looked down on. Much of the interaction here between men would not happen in a hunting camp, for a variety of reasons. Birdwatcher posted this in another thread within the last day or two, "...on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." What he posted was appropriate regarding the issue at hand on that thread...and it's appropriate here as well. To the OP, if someone offends you send them a mean PM or just reply and call them a fitting name. It seems that how it works around here. Speak your mind. Sometimes a joke is taken the wrong way and sometimes people are genuine buttholes and sometimes a joke is taken the wrong way and someone over reacts. Stick has thrown a few insults at me, too. But he does have a lot of knowledge, pays close attention to details, and freely shares them. Even if I were the moderator here, I'd probably leave him be. I've been at a couple of other forums in the past, who had control freaks in charge, and they frequently got in the way of useful info being shared.
So accept what's useful, and filter out what's not useful or annoying to you. The world won't ever be perfect, but that doesn't mean you should try to silence others.

FWIW, I can't recall Stick ridiculing/insulting someone for not knowing about a particular subject. What he does is castigate (castrate?) those idiots who don't know what they're talking about but don't refrain from hiding that fact. This place is FULL of them. He just doesn't suffer fools gladly.

I'd been posting almost exclusively for 12 years over at Accurate Reloading, but things got awful slow there.
I wandered over here and started posting regularly about 18 months ago.
My advice, watch, be patient, contribute where you can, establish credibility and create a niche for yourself.
There are a ton of resources other than a forum like this for education, and there's nothing like personal experience.
I won't venture to speak for others, but as I'm a gainfully unemployed, empty-nester that does not watch TV, I come here for entertainment and a way to occupy my time.
What's the old bromide, Mind over Matter. If I don't mind, it don't matter. Be secure and confident in your own abilities and don't take anything personally.
Pay your dues, PM folks, keep a confidence and don't whine or complain. I find that the older I get, the smaller my circle of acquaintences can become. I've made a number of friends over the last 18 months, have hunted with several and have four hunts lined up with members in the next 12 months.
It's a good place to hang your hat, buy and sell, and let off steam.
Coming from AR which was heavily moderated I enjoy the lack of a heavy hand.

Well, as the OP on this one, it sure has been interesting. The Fridge Girls were a delightful addition. The realization that there were so many off-center dimwits on the forum was less than delightful, and quite honestly was a disappointment. I am truly amazed at the adoration, by a few, of Big Stick. It seems entirely unwarranted unless the profane revere him because he's the most profane. That seems to be an odd way to earn respect on a hunting/shooting/reloading forum. As to him being a wizard of shooting knowledge, that may be, but most of what I read from him doesn't support that. Sounds like he's just another small person that has little or no real life or real friends, but wants to be important somewhere. He's on this forum, with his acolytes, because other forums won't tolerate his gutter level verbal style. And to look at this on a larger scale, very few social groups would tolerate him. To put this a bit plainer, I won't see him at the country club unless he's shining shoes, parking cars, or unloading the dumpster. Or...perhaps 'diving' the dumpster.
I've met a few guys like him and his butt-buds, and I fired most of them or arranged that they be fired. So now maybe those of you that didn't understand the logic of my original post will now have a clearer picture of why I did it. Well, as the OP on this one, it sure has been interesting. The Fridge Girls were a delightful addition. The realization that there were so many off-center dimwits on the forum was less than delightful, and quite honestly was a disappointment. I am truly amazed at the adoration, by a few, of Big Stick. It seems entirely unwarranted unless the profane revere him because he's the most profane. That seems to be an odd way to earn respect on a hunting/shooting/reloading forum. As to him being a wizard of shooting knowledge, that may be, but most of what I read from him doesn't support that. Sounds like he's just another small person that has little or no real life or real friends, but wants to be important somewhere. He's on this forum, with his acolytes, because other forums won't tolerate his gutter level verbal style. And to look at this on a larger scale, very few social groups would tolerate him. To put this a bit plainer, I won't see him at the country club unless he's shining shoes, parking cars, or unloading the dumpster. Or...perhaps 'diving' the dumpster.

Well, as the OP on this one, it sure has been interesting. The Fridge Girls were a delightful addition. The realization that there were so many off-center dimwits on the forum was less than delightful, and quite honestly was a disappointment. I am truly amazed at the adoration, by a few, of Big Stick. It seems entirely unwarranted unless the profane revere him because he's the most profane. That seems to be an odd way to earn respect on a hunting/shooting/reloading forum. As to him being a wizard of shooting knowledge, that may be, but most of what I read from him doesn't support that. Sounds like he's just another small person that has little or no real life or real friends, but wants to be important somewhere. He's on this forum, with his acolytes, because other forums won't tolerate his gutter level verbal style. And to look at this on a larger scale, very few social groups would tolerate him. To put this a bit plainer, I won't see him at the country club unless he's shining shoes, parking cars, or unloading the dumpster. Or...perhaps 'diving' the dumpster.
I've met a few guys like him and his butt-buds, and I fired most of them or arranged that they be fired. So now maybe those of you that didn't understand the logic of my original post will now have a clearer picture of why I did it. I simply could not understand, and still can't, how a person like Stick can be allowed to participate in this forum. That said, he was firmly supported by a segment of this forum, pretty much all of whom had their say in the small words that hint to me that they are on the same socio-economic plane as the mighty Stick. As for me, I tend to get the good info, as I need it, from people that I know to be experts. And I can get the info clearly and without needless profanity. There is a direct connection (inverse) between level of education and the level of profanity used in normal conversation.

Gotta friend that works at Asheboro zoo. They had to dart the resident silver back to extract a tooth. ( Imagine a Silver back with a toothache. ) He said the aluminum darting pole was about 8 feet long and as big as his wrist in diameter. I had a Sunday to kill one day in Chicago (business trip). Went to the Lincoln Park zoo. Go into the gorilla building and they have a huge lexan window, probably at least 2" thick, where the visitors could stand on the other side of the glass from the apes.
Six feet from the glass is a tree stump, with the silverback sitting on it, looking bored. There's about a hundred kids pressed against the glass looking at him. He glances over, see all the kids, then looks away, acting disinterested.
