Lol, according to this thread, they now exist from Florida to Georgia to West Virginia to Colorado to Oregon to Washington state, so my original estimate of a population of 30-40 was clearly way low.

Think about it, if they were really that big, they would need to be out foraging for food at least 10-12 hours a day, and all the guys sitting on a hillside glassing for mule deer or elk or bear or sheep would see them pretty often.
