Some rather interesting opinions on Canada, many of our politicians and luminaries and gun control. crazy
I'll leave the argument about who was, or was not, a "Commie" to others - everyone has their own opinions but I would like to express a few facts, not opinions.
1. We have had gun control of one sort or another since Confederation. I have my Father-In-Law's "liscence" dated 1945 if you care to see it. You have had to register handguns since 1934 and automatics since 1951. In 1969 the concept of registering "restricted", "non restricted" and "prohibited " came into effect. Interestingly , Bill C17 which was in 1991 which further limited gun "rights" was enacted by a Conservative, not Liberal Government and received the backing in Parliament of all parties.
2. Some may despise Trudeau but he was "voted" the 3rd most popular Canadian in a poll across Canada. That's pretty good I'd say. First Place interestingly went to Tommy Douglas, a "Socialist" who pioneered national medical services to all Canadians. Trudeau was famous for trying to make Canada "Canadian" rather than being a colony of Britain and he repatriated the Constitution. He was also famous for stating that "the Government has no business in the bedrooms of Canada" which would seem to be against "Socialism" where the State wants to control everything. Seems to me that much, if not most of Canada preferred Trudeau's "Socialism" at the time to the alternatives.
3. The OP notes the actions of a number of infamous Canadians including Al Eagleson. I don't know if the implications were that he was a criminal abetted by the Liberals but the fact is that he was a Conservative Party member and MLA. Contrary to what the OP said, he actually was tried and convicted in both the US and Canada, not just the US.
4. Seems that the OP is blaming all the World's, or at least Canada's present woes on the Liberals. Yes, they have their warts, like all parties before and after but they have also produced such Internationally acclaimed Leaders as Lester Pearson who won the Nobel Peace Prize. Not too shabby an accomplishment.
My point is not to defend Trudeau or the Liberals but the OP's rambling accusation is in many ways baseless and misleading and I felt that there are two sides to every story.
BTW, one of my Canadian "Heroes" was John Diefenbaker - a true Canadian Conservative Prime Minister.
