My mother-in-law was mildly but chronically ill in the fall/winter of 2012 and did not receive immunization for flu that year. She died of complications of influenza in March of 2013. My wife and I got flu shots last week as part of our Autumn ritual. Choose your path wisely, and balance the risk with the benefit.
