Is that a Police Positive Special there, Hawkeye?



One very popular variation of the Police Positive Special was the Detective Special, commonly called the Dick Special. So, the advertising copy for it could have read something like:

“When faced with a felonious assault, do what so many thousands of private detectives and plain clothes police officers have done since 1927, pull out your Dick.”

I carried a Detective Special as my off-duty gun during my first year on the CHP in LA. In late ‘68, I was walking from our apartment complex, parts of which were still under construction, directly into the enclosed parking garage when I encountered two burglars loading a stolen role of carpet into the bed of a pickup which had been backed into the garage. I pulled out my Dick and stepped behind a pillar for cover as I challenged them. They beat a hasty retreat, the stolen carpet hanging out the back of the pickup as they disappeared into the night. The investigating Downey PD Officer asked me why I didn’t shoot them. My reply: “Wasn’t my carpet.”
