A rifle with a bit of weight is good for target shooting or varminting, but for walking around I prefer something light. I have happily used a 700Ti, and currently have a little single shot which would be a little lighter still, as well as a 6lb drilling and some others not much heavier.

The main thing I've found with testing them at the range is that they should ideally be held as you would do in the field, ie with your weak hand holding the fore-end (with the back of your wrist against the rest), and the buttplate firm against your shoulder. They are also apt to show up inconsistencies in your technique, such as not getting the buttplate on the same spot each time, or letting your elbows drift between shots, or dragging your trigger finger drag against the stock. Get these things right though and there's no reason the light rifle shouldn't shoot accurately. FWIW the 700Ti would put three rounds into one ragged hole at 100 yards, as does my little single shot.
