DaveR - I wouldn't totally give up on hunting in Calif... PM me if you want some tips, but the key thing to remember in transporting guns in your vehicle is to keep the firearms (unloaded) and ammo in separate, locked containers. It's that simple. A pain in the butt, yes... a stupid imposition, yes... but there's some good hunting here if you know where to go -- some of it within a 3 hour drive.

Of course, like everyone else here, I would infinitely prefer Arizona's gun-friendly approach.
